Adam Crabtree says: "Evolutionary love is the ardent desire to promote the fullest possible
realization and fulfillment of the love object. Put in these broad terms,
evolutionary love is something we can experience not just toward other
people. Evolutionary love is felt also towards all living things, nature,
and all that exists in the universe. It is also directed towards ideas,
which are not abstract things, but the living embodiment of mind. Everything
in the universe grows and evolves towards its fulfillment, whatever that
many be in any particular case--and evolutionary love is the driver, built
into the very foundations of the universe.
Join Dawn McGuire and Paul Watsky in this awesome Oakland venue. McGuire will read from her new collection, The Aphasia Café. McGuire, a neurologist and Professor at the Neuroscience Institute of Morehouse School of Medicine, has published three collections. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. She most recently won the Sarah Lawrence/ Campbell Corner Language Exchange Prize for “poems that treat larger themes with lyric intensity.” In her best-selling third book, The Aphasia Café, McGuire enters into the world of her aphasic patients to explore the way we use language to construct our identity and world.

These accessible, powerful poems invite listeners to enter into a conversation about language, identity, silence, and human resilience Paul Watsky is the author of Telling The Difference (Fisher King Press, 2010) and cotranslator with Emiko Miyashita of Santoka (PIE Books, 2006). His work has appeared or is forthcoming are Interim, Smartish Pace, The Carolina Quarterly, Many Mountains Moving, Alabama Literary Review, The Pinch, andNatural Bridge.

"To quote Norman O. Brown quoting Euripides, 'God made an opening for the unexpected,' and at long last we have what many of us have greatly desired: a collection of poems by Paul Watsky. His is a singular voice in contemporary poetry, with a range that encompasses the wry, the mordant, the laugh-out-loud funny and the deeply moving, often within the same poem. One of Ovid's earliest critics complained that he did not know when to leave well enough alone. In this he resembles the eponymous hero of Watsky's 'The Magnificent Goldstein,' and, come to think of it, Watsky himself, for which we have cause to rejoice." -Charles Martin

I'm excited to announce we will be having two in-person Alliance meetups in Marin County in July and August!

On Saturday, July 28 in the afternoon, two Bay Area Jungian analysts, Patricia Damery and Naomi Ruth Lowinsky-- who have just released a new anthology "Marked by Fire: Stories of the Jungian Way" will be gracing us for a book celebration and author event in San Rafael. This event will be free to attend (with pre-registration) and will consist of a lovely garden reception/greet up for the first hour, followed by sharing of from the new work.

Then, on Saturday, August 18th, Craig Chalquist will present on Earthrise--a concept based on Joseph Campbell's idea of needing a new mythic image for our time. This event will also be free of charge and take place in San Anselmo.

So--save the dates and hopefully you can make one or both of these. More details to come on both! Watch this space or the upcoming June newsletter.

I look forward to renewing connections after our fantastic event in March.

In case you haven't seen it, this schedule/news just in from the Nor Cal Dream Institute (founded by the esteemed Meredith Sabini) in Berkeley... (BTW, if anyone is going to some or all of IASD, let me know so we can all connect there)

Dear Community,

We're turning the corner into June and looking forward to summer. We are hosting many different events throughout the summer months, June, July, and August. Please be sure to check our website for complete details (www.dream-institute.com)

We are particularly pleased to be showing another film, "Breakthrough: Art, Analysis, and the Liberation of the Creative Spirit" next Friday, June 8th.

Also, the International Association for the Study of Dreams is holding its annual conference in Berkeley at the end of June. Meredith Sabini, Richard Russo, John Beebe, and others will be presenting. See below for more details.

We hope you will join us!

Breakthrough: Art, Analysis, and the Liberation of the Creative Spirit (film)

Friday June 8, 7-9pm, $20

This film captures the intimate experience of eight artists who have had psychoanalytic treatment, demonstrating the growth and freedom made possible by facing the pain that both psychoanalysis and creation bring into awareness. The artists presented in Breakthrough found themselves held back in their lives and work because of traumatic events and unresolved emotional issues from the past. The film shows how the combination of analytic therapy and creative work liberated them. Rather than dulling an artist’s creative edge, analysis facilitates personal growth and creative freedom. Produced by the Lucy Daniels Foundation (50 mins).

“Big Dreams”: How to Recognize Them

Meredith Sabini

Wednesday June 13, 7-9pm

Most indigenous cultures distinguished between "small" dreams that pertain only to the dreamer and "big" dreams that pertain to the life of the tribe. Joseph won his freedom by correctly interpreting the Pharaoh's dream of seven fat and seven lean cows as prophetic of Egypt's coming years of plenty and of famine. C. G. Jung had prophetic dreams of WWI but initially mistook them to be "small" personal ones. You will hear these and other historic and contemporary examples of big dreams and learn guidelines for recognizing them when they occur. Big dreams you may have had are most welcome.

Monthly Dinner

Wednesdays, June 27, Report on IASD conference

6-8pm, $20

The dinners we hosted have been a great success so we will continue regularly now. Meet upcoming presenters and enjoy conversation with kindred folks. Delicious food provided by Poulet, of Berkeley, with chicken, vegetarian, and vegan options. Seating for 15. Please call by Tuesday noon if you’d like to come.

IASD Conference in Berkeley, June 2012

The International Association for the Study of Dreams, whose headquarters is in our building, will host their 29th annual conference at the Doubletree Hotel at the Berkeley Marina, June 22–26. This event brings together writers, researchers, academics, artists, therapists, and laypeople to share and celebrate dreams. Please visit www.iasdreams.org for more information.

Below are programs to be presented by Meredith Sabini with John Beebe and Richard Russo.

Saturday June 23 2:00–4:00 pm CE Program
The Objective Dimension in Dreams and Dreaming
Meredith Sabini and John Beebe
An emphasis on the subjective, personal meanings of dreams tends to overlook their many objective aspects. The dreaming mind faces outward and inward. The presenters will discuss this distinction with examples of dreams that show other people objectively, concern issues in the world, and present elements requiring objective (factual) amplification.

Sunday June 24 11:30–12:30 pm CE Program
Diagnostic Information in Initial Dreams
Meredith Sabini
Initial dreams are a singular type: the dreaming mind’s concerted effort to convey objectively to a new therapist the nature of a client’s suffering and possible healing. Careful attention can improve assessment and treatment planning. Examples related to trauma, suicidality, depression, psychosis, borderline dynamics, and spiritual emergence will be given.

Monday June 25 2:30–4:00 pm
Dreams of the Great Turning
Richard Russo and Meredith Sabini
This presentation explores what dreams might be saying about the fundamental paradigm shift that our culture is undergoing, drawing on “big” dreams collected in the past year at the Dream Institute of Northern California, including some from a current series of special Culture Dreaming sessions, on the theme of the “Great Turning” (Joanna Macy). Audience members will have an opportunity to share and discuss their own “big dreams” and/or dreams of the Great Turning.

Crop circles have been a source of deepening wonder for many over the course of time. I spent a few days myself tramping through wheatfields in England last July to experience the phenomenon and am profoundly intrigued. I can't wait to see Gary's presentation and I think it will generate some compelling discussion--not only on crop circles and the paranormal--but also on archetypes and deep symbolic meaning.

"Gary Bobroff delivered an engaging lecture and follow up workshop that inspired and challenged believers and skeptics alike. Gary's in-depth research from both a scientific and Jungian perspective, successfully bridged preconceived notions to access the unconscious realm; a feat seldom executed in such an authentic manner. As an organization, we were concerned that the topic would limit participation, yet the program generated record turn out for both lecture and workshop. Gary is a gifted presenter whose presence and perspective is destined to grow in popularity. I highly recommend Gary to any organization willing to stretch and explore the shadow in a creative and innovative manner."

Welcome to the "Bay Area Hive"--the local Bay Area Chapter of Depth Psychology Alliance. As many of you know, I have a passion for honeybees and so I'm having some fun by giving us the hive as a symbol. I think it's so powerful!

We are still a small group here, but I wanted to thank you for taking the time to join. At some point in 2012, hopefully earlier rather than later, we will be scheduling a live, in-person Meetup so those of us who live close can actually come together in community. I know there are many more of us in the Alliance who haven't joined here yet so I suspect we will have a fun and lively gathering.

Meanwhile, I'll try to let you know when I come across local events where some of us, at least, might meet. Two in particular are coming to mind--first, the Dream Institute of NorCal (located in Berkeley) has lots of ongoing excellent events which they list here on the Alliance (see the Events section). The Institute is headed by Meredith Sabini who edited one of my favorite books, "The Earth Has a Soul: The Nature Writings of C.G. Jung" and she is a wonderful person and scholar with a passion for working with dreams. It's late notice, I know, but his afternoon, she is hosting a "cultural dreaming" event--and there will be others.

Also, I just discovered a Holiday Open House followed by a screening of the film "Thrive" will take place at IONS in Petaluma on December 18. Ralph Metzner, also a remarkable mind in the field, will be discussing it after. Here's a link to the posting: http://www.depthpsychologyalliance.com/events/film-presentation-thrive-followed-by-discussion-with-ralph-metzne

I'm not entirely sure if I'll make it, but I'd like to. Please let me know if anyone else plans to go.

If you hear of local events of interest, let us all know too!

Happy holidays!
