“Nature is not a Ritual” – Online Roundtable Topic by Willi Paul, CommunityAlchemy.com

Definitions -

A ritual is a semi-regular gathering of family or community members that share a Nature-based experience, value or dream often associated with local roles and traditions.

“ Mythic imprinting” is an iterative and transmutative process is grounded in the initiation, journey and hero triad from Joseph Campbell and is one way that neighborhood artifacts can help neighbors generate new songs, poems and myths. (W. Paul)

* * * * * * *

Consider three types of ritual -

1. Nature Rituals

* Nature is not a ritual but a spirit. She teaches us about ecology, seasonal cycles, beauty, and the Sacred.

* Nature is best experienced as “embedded” with our families.” Not inside a building but in the outdoors.

* Symbols drive the schedule: fall leaves, snow piles, sprouting seeds, our harvest table.

2. Human + Nature Rituals

* Bond fires, picnics, camping, star gazing, catch and release on a trout stream.

* Human + Nature ceremonies are best local, decentralized experiences; consider a pagan rites?

* We kill, drag and then hang ornaments on Christmas Trees. Human + Nature ritual.

3. Human Rituals

* Humans are Nature ritual digesters and morphers. Nature is a raw ritual source too often tamed and controlled.

* We need to build shared rituals based on love and tolerance not selfish consumption and conquest for the Popes and CEO’s.

* Humans rituals have been devised over the Centuries to punish and control many cultures with a top-down, rules-driven “pseudo ritual” agenda.

Discussion Questions -

* What are the connective tissues that can spawn new Human + Nature-based rituals? Is this social DNA lost?

* What symbols dominate our rituals now? What does that crucifixion really mean on your chain?

* Consider technology, sports, fast food. If such unhealthy, short-term consumption is not a ritual, how does this behavior impact the creation of new Nature + Human rituals?

* Is the long-practiced behavior of littering an anti-Nature ritual or more of a bad habit?

* Can we watch and celebrate Nature on our devices – as short-term, downloaded rituals?

* Offer an example of how we currently experience a common religious holiday as a ritual?

People recognize their used shower water can be beneficial to their landscapes, and the awareness is growing that we can't continue wasting and polluting water the way we've done in the past. Our relationship to water must change, and greywater is a piece of that transformation.”

* * * * * * *

Discuss your active vs. passive techniques for water re-use?

My techniques are all passive. Diverting greywater, storing rainwater (in tanks but especially in the soil). Then there are simple ways of being creative with water indoors, such as putting a few bricks in the toilet tank to limit its refill volume, and using kitchen sink water for compost heaps or perennial beds. Another one is to keep a bucket in the shower to catch the first bit of water, before the shower heats up. After a few showers the bucket is 3/4 full and can be poured into the toilet TANK as soon as it begins to refill, after flushing.

Should a home gardener calculate the moisture content of their soil? If so, how?

I wouldn’t bother using more than a finger to test the moisture. If it’s wet an inch or so below the surface, the roots have access to water. I’m often asked how long to program irrigation timers for. It’s surprising that most people assume around 30-minute durations as a starting point, several times a week. A rule of thumb for me is no more than 10 minutes a day, early in the morning, once or twice a week. If you really want to be conservative, give everything a good watering and then shut your irrigation off completely. Observe your plants. What are they telling you? How long before they begin to wilt and look thirsty? Find out how long your garden can go in a heat spell without water, and you’ll have your duration. Again, if you do this in a heat spell then you will be able to dial it down even more in milder weather conditions.

What is your take on the water restrictions in places around the Bay Area? Do you police your neighborhood?

I did recently call EBMUD on an apartment complex across the street from me actually! There was a geyser going off every couple of days (broken irrigation head), and the problem was that no one could tell me who the property owner was, otherwise I’d have contacted them directly. But no, in general I don’t police anyone. I’m more concerned about agricultural use really than I am residential. Commercial agriculture uses 50 to 80% of the state’s water, depending on who’s telling it, and this is done in seriously inefficient ways. Much is used just to wash the insects and dirt off of the harvested crops, and the overhead-sprinkler irrigation that is widely used causes much of the water to be windswept and evaporated before it hits the ground.

What types of Bay Area food crops are faster to a yield in a hobby garden?

Radishes are fast and fairly drought-tolerant. I’m a big fan of perennial vegetables. Sunchoke, artichoke, and tree collards, for instance, withstand drought fairly well. The latter can live for a decade and provide protein-dense food 24/7 for the entire time. I can’t say that for many garden plants.

Growing food in general, whether or not they are particularly drought-tolerant plants, saves us water in the long run. For the reasons I mentioned about commercial agriculture, we can save a lot of water by growing as much of our own food as we can instead of supporting wasteful agriculture practices. This in turn would lead to a scaling-down of larger farms, which in turn would force those farms to focus more on quality in order to survive.

But I do also think we should focus on drought-tolerant crop plants. Some of my favorites to work with are resilient in the face of drought:

fig, olive, pomegranate, loquat, jujube, strawberry fruit tree, feijoa (or pineapple guava), carob, black walnut, blackberry, grape (blackberry and grape both have native CA varieties), prickly pear cactus, rosemary, thyme, oregano

How can I build hydrophilic soil on a sun-drenched, fried-out and nutrient-deficient city lot?

The most important thing is to keep the soil surface covered! Think of the soil as a child. If you saw a naked child lying there exposed to the elements, your instinct would be to throw a blanket over it.

Whether it’s by adding tons of organic matter (compost) or dumping a few inches or more of wood chips or straw on your planting area, the ground needs to be covered to reduce evaporation. You can also do a living mulch – that is to cover the ground with vegetation. The simplest way to do this is to use a common cover crop such as red clover, or any member of the bean/pea family. Just get a huge bag of your favorite beans next time you are at the store, and the next time it’s about to rain, till the surface of your soil and scatter the seeds by hand.

They must be kept moist after their initial contact with water, so you may have to plan to have someone water heavily if the rain subsides over the next few days. But soon you will have a nice green carpet protecting your soil. Not only do mulches (living or not) protect the ground and your plants from drying out, they provide several other functions.

The most obvious is that you don’t track mud in the house when you don’t have bare, exposed soil everywhere. Another is that erosion is minimized. A single raindrop hits the ground with enormous force, and without a matrix of fungi and plant roots to absorb the impact, the topsoil gets washed away. Having a buffer to absorb that shock and send the drops gently to the ground keeps the soil in place. So notice here I mentioned two benefits of using live mulches (this can be anything, trees, shrubs, anything).

1) The aboveground parts of the plants act as a shock absorber for the impact of the rain.

2) The roots and associated microbes form a sponge-like, porous soil surface that absorbs water.

And to reiterate what I said before, adding organic matter, compost, to your soil is probably the surest way to turn your soil hydrophilic (water-loving). Compost is said to be able to hold up to 20 times its weight in water! Combine this with an evaporation shield (mulch) and you get to store all of that water right in the ground where your plants can access it at leisure. Yet another function of mulch is creating habitat for beneficial insects and microbes. This is a whole topic unto itself.

A healthy micro-biome is critical to a garden’s health. Look into the work of Dr. Elaine Ingham and the Soil Food Web movement for more info. And finally, mulching reduces weeds! Nature abhors a vacuum, so if you leave a place exposed nature will put something there to cover it. Find a sprawling groundcover plant that you really like and use it to fill that niche instead. It’s not a weed if you intend it to be there. Sheet-mulching (applying cardboard before the woodchips) in my experience reduces the presence of weeds by probably 95%.

What the hell do I do with my compost? I don’t have a garden….

Start or join a community garden. There are vacant lots everywhere. Or see how many tomatoes you can grow on your patio or balcony. They make little compost tumblers for these situations. Worm bins are also a fun and (and more kid-friendly) way to turn your kitchen scraps into black gold. Chickens also will make good use of your food scraps.

I saw a video online about sheet mulching. Is this typically a group effort? Isn‘t the ink on the cardboard toxic to the soil?

It certainly is more fun when it’s a group effort, but it’s an extremely low-labor task compared to most other gardening jobs. Cardboard is free, too. Bicycle shops, big appliance stores, any place that deals with large boxes is usually happy to give it away. They also sell rolls of it at hardware stores if you don’t like breaking boxes down. As for the ink, there is some controversy of opinion there. Some believe that the inky chemicals are neutralized by the soil fungi pretty immediately. But the issue is largely irrelevant to me, since its only tender annuals like lettuce and things that you’d be worried about, and annual beds don’t get sheet mulched just because it would be such a hassle to dig through it twice a year. Instead a simple layer of straw is usually used.

For larger areas such as patios and paths, as well as areas planted with perennials, even fruiting trees, vines and shrubs, cardboard is considered safer. Plants have barriers that don’t allow toxins to enter the fruit. This is why they tell you that if you have lead contamination not to plant leaf- or root-vegetables, but fruit is generally thought to be okay.
My neighbor has seriously neglected his sprinkler system. There are exposed black plastic pipes all over the beds and the lawn. How would you start to access this scene?

As I said, keep everything covered. The sprinklers can be converted to drip, which instead of spraying indiscriminately everywhere, sends small amounts of water to each plant. Having even drip tubes exposed to the sun, however, will shorten their life. Keep everything covered.

There are lots of water-conserving techniques out there. Google some of these:

Ollas – unglazed clay pots with narrow necks, and without holes - and fill them with water. They attract sub-surface plant roots which suck water from them as needed, never wasting any.

Wicking Beds – raised beds which are irrigated from beneath the plant root zone and wick up moisture, seriously reducing the sun’s evaporative effects.

Sunken Beds – beds that are lower than the surrounding paths. Water naturally flows down into them rather than running off quickly, as in most raised beds.

Swales – contour ditches that catch and store water for a few days, allowing it to seep into the ground, recharging the landscape.

Curb Cuts – using a concrete saw to open sections of street curbs to channel street flow from rain events into gardens.

The SC is envisioned to be as off-grid and family / neighbor run as possible. Gratitude-fueled! Training programs are coupled with material and services exchange where possible. The vision utilizes what skills and values are already there – and to teach each other new ones when possible.

SC is a hands-on resilience machine as rural America reels from the eminent toxic corporate collapse and springs back to stability.

Yes, there are. Being a woman is one thing. Being a woman with dreadlocks and piercing is another. I have actually had people tell me to my face that they were surprised I was intelligent and focused after speaking with me. People judge at face value all the time, and I feel if I changed myself to appeal to a wider audience then I would be perpetuating the discrimination.

Men are taken more seriously in a lot of areas than women, and this is true in Permaculture as well. A lot of men within the Permaculture movement are very intelligent, incredible, extremely practical people, and deserve to be recognized for their expertise. Many leadership skills are actually male traits, and so women do not appear to gain as much exposure as men within the industry. One of the main barriers is talking to earth-movers and surveyors- very male dominated industries- where your opinion as a women is not taken on board with as much acceptance and respect. I am hoping that things become a little more balanced in future. Although I am professional with my work, I do approach course participants with warmth and even nurturing, and that is something I am proud of.

Is this a political process?

The answer to many Permaculture related questions is; it depends. It can be political, and most of the time when dealing with invisible structures such as economics, community and legalities, politics and planning are a large part of this. I believe just as a landscape should have a design, so should a business, social structure or economy. This is where social Permaculture plays a part, and is a facet within the movement which I have become increasingly interested in.

When dealing with landscapes, often there is a predictable action - reaction process. It can be quite easy, with research and design, to shape a landscape and encourage an outcome. When dealing with people and concepts however, things become more complicated. I do believe that in order for us to localize our food and economies, we must learn to accept and respect a wide range of people, and be open to educating one another.

Localization can be taken into the hands of the community, and in many ways we need community backing in order to stabilize our food supply and deal with legalities that do not take environmental rights into consideration. This could well be a political process, but how that process is designed and its outcomes are up to the community.

“North American Permaculture Convergence (NAPC) as an egalitarian community. We view the NAPC event as a gathering of the tribe. A meeting of a peer group. We value everyone’s input and participation. Come because you are excited about participating. Everyone has something to share. We are all part of the permaculture community. Gatherings and festivals are one of the most important parts of being human. Particularly when it is a gathering of your own “culture” or subculture. You feel safe there and belong. People from the same profession getting together is inspiring, empowering and offers a way to exchange information and make connections that can never be achieved via internet or technology.”

Interview with Koreen by Willi

Can the earth be a keystone species?

Interesting question. Viewed as an organism, the earth has the ability to create balance in its ecosystems and that is a core role played by keystone species; there are self-correcting mechanisms built in to her systems that we as a race appear to be far from understanding. The capacity of the earth to heal damage is quite stunning. How far that can go, in spite of the abuse being heaped upon her, is a question that has not yet been answered. We have seen where some of her limitations lie in areas of desertification that aren't recovering without assistance, dead lakes, etc. When thinking about keystone species, the questions that arise for me are: How can we, as a race, become more of a keystone species ourselves - facilitating balance instead of destroying it? What can we, as designers of systems, do to bring this about?

How is permaculture a “healing force?” Are these spiritual in nature? Any examples to share?

Good permaculture design facilitates the healing of damage that nature has not been able to heal on its own. It makes sense that if we have the knowledge of how to help the earth regenerate that we should use that.

We all have our own criteria for what we consider spiritual. Certainly there are phenomena in the healing areas that are not fully explained by the material sciences. I think that many of us have worked with plants that responded positively to love and attention in spite of lack of water, nutrition, or sunlight, as one example. I think a great question to ask at the convergence and elsewhere would be, "How can we increase our capacity to heal, as individuals, and as a movement?" I have my own feelings about that, others have their own feelings. Together, we can perhaps come up with answers that are greater than the sum of parts. That act would fit my personal definition of something that is spiritual.

This type of work is best done in person, which is one reason why I feel that convergences are important. There are connections that are created when we meet together, that are difficult to replicate long distance but that can be carried forward from that initial meeting.

We are striving to create frameworks that will support the work of taking these deeper conversations somewhere useful. One thing the convergence is offering is facilitation and space to form working groups. Michael Pilarski can be contacted by anyone interested in forming a working group on any topic. (friendsofthetrees at yahoo). We will also have roundtables. If anyone wants to facilitate a roundtable, please apply on our web site under "presentations."

Time has speeded up substantially since the 1960's. How can you help people make better observations in this ecosystem?

That is an amazing question! Thank you for being observant and thoughtful enough to ask it.

Internally, our own movement is expanding exponentially and we can either be thoughtful and observe the patterns, or we can experience the patterns of expansion without observation or thoughtful design. We are moving to the next stage of succession. What stage are we in? Where are we going? How will we get there? This subject is shaping up to be a major point of discussion at the convergence, from a number of angles. For instance, the Permaculture Institute of North America will present some design proposals on this topic.

I think we can increase our observational capacity if we work together more closely. The first step to doing so may be to talk to each other. And share data - this includes regional site assessment information, successful actions, potential points of collaboration. Some areas are doing that more than others and we can learn from one another. Cultural acceleration can feel overwhelming. It can be less so with cooperation. I believe that those movements that are taking the time to create strong collaborative/mutually beneficial systems are more likely to flourish over time.

We can also be smart about what we are spending our time observing - in this world of information overload, one can get distracted by the weed seeds blowing by and not notice the condition of the soil at all (as a metaphor).

Many of us are doing some great observation at a local or regional level, but there are trends that are occurring on broader levels as well, and those are energies in the system. Depending on your situation, to ignore them could be analogous to ignoring what's going on upstream on the Mississippi and only paying attention to the part of it you can see, if you have a farm on its banks. That can be a good way to get blindsided.

Some permaculture designers are doing some incredible things at local levels that are never heard of by the larger community. How can we increase our capacity to share successful actions? Some people feel that we should stick to our regional areas, but no other major movement on the planet is doing that. Activists are cooperating with each other on deeper levels and across issues, corporations and even governments are doing so. But many of our economic and social models are almost completely isolated to the level of one or two person organizations. How can we apply permaculture design principles to our movement, as a whole? What opportunities are there to integrate, not segregate? Sharing successful actions doesn't mean we have to lose or weaken our local identities or networks, especially if integration on larger levels is approached from the viewpoint of strengthening local networks.

The systems that we are dealing with have leverage points at state, national or international levels in a number of cases. We need to understand the macro patterns, in order to design effectively. Not everybody wants to do that, but some of us need to.

And finally, observing the acceleration of tech, of communications, of culture, I feel that the main thing that is missing is ethics. What if permaculture ethics were at the heart of every major decision making process? That is a beautiful vision. It's also a leverage point, something we can focus on as a body, and we can work toward getting our fellow humans to see the advantages of such a viewpoint. I'm encouraged by the growing number of people outside of our movement who also see the importance of including people care, earth care and being wise about the use of surplus in the conversation.

What are some of the common symbols in permaculture?

Mollison's egg, and Holmgren's 12 principles and permaculture flower stand out for me as icons.

Is permaculture for the rich?

It is a people's practice that can be used by anyone regardless of circumstance. I have a project at Pine Ridge reservation and have worked in Haiti - two of the poorest areas in the western hemisphere. We have used the waste stream in both places to improve conditions and opportunities. I believe we can do more to make permaculture more broadly accessible regardless of income level, and to reach out to include a broader diversity of people. This is one issue that will be discussed at the convergence.

I feel that social and economic injustices can be very effectively addressed by permaculture.
There are historical patterns, institutional patterns and other aspects that may not be obvious or easily understood, but nevertheless, affect energy distribution substantially. Designs can fail when these are not fully taken into account.

I personally know very few wealthy people who have taken an interest in permaculture. The rich may have the capacity to do more damage because of the energy (money, land, etc) that they control, but also could accomplish much good, by how they use their funds and assets. There are some large cattle ranchers who are using Holistic Management to heal their ecosystems and watersheds, and this is a positive trend. There is an ethical investors movement that is a relatively new energy in the system. The jury is still out as to how well these trends will work over time. We need better methods of linking available assets (land, finance) to worthy projects.

Are you advocating a return to older values / times as much as well as a shift forward to new ones? Can you offer examples of both?

Yes, both, absolutely! We have a history in our movement that many newer designers are not aware of. Michael Pilarski, one of the core organizers of the convergence and a 30+ year veteran permaculture designer, is collating a history of the movement in the US. He has formed a working group on that topic. Other elders will speak about where have we come from? What is the framework on which this movement has been built? How can we honor the workability of that framework, be conscious of it, and best utilize it to carry us forward?

Elders councils are cultural models that have stood the test of time over thousands of years. Scott Pittman has proposed a meeting of elders at this convergence and many North American elders are attending.

Older values are important in a larger sense too - there is much indigenous knowledge that we have lost touch with as a culture that is really vital to our survival. It's important to keep in touch with our roots and to understand them.

On the other hand, within our movement, we have some bright, creative younger energy in our ranks. How can this energy be integrated for maximum benefit for all concerned? How can we be optimally resilient and respond with intelligent design to our own succession process? How can we find an optimum balance between this new energy, and the fresh viewpoints that it brings, and the knowledge and experience of elders?

In field work and design, many designers stay current with cutting edge soil science, as well as scientific developments in regard to the built environment, energy, etc. The convergence will host activities regarding scientific research in the permaculture movement to facilitate that energy.

The lessons from history and the experience viewpoint of elders can help us make the best decisions about the issues we are facing and we all can learn valuable lessons from fresh viewpoints. How can we integrate these aspects better?

Are there different regional or international practices in permaculture that folks need to understand?

Every region has its unique culture, and unique needs and resources. So yes, there are differences. There is a lot of cultural diversity within many regions as well. I say,"Vive le difference!"

Let's embrace the diversity, and welcome it as something that is healthy for the system, rather than resisting it. What do we really need to agree on? I would say that we need to agree to use what works, not what doesn't, and to keep observing to make sure we notice when it's not working. Beyond that? Let's discuss!

How is the Convergence an example of localization?

The Convergence is already starting to strengthen beneficial connections in the Midwest regions, and we will have a bioregional breakout session, but beyond that, I don't know that it is a good example. And that is where I may differ from how some permaculturists see things.

I clearly see the benefits of localization and do many things to forward that concept in my personal and professional life. But I also think there is a time when we need to gather together in a larger group and look at the big picture - from pattern to detail, right? Macro to micro. There is a balance. Some indigenous tribes had major meetings and gatherings across tribal lines to address issues common to all of them or concerning all of them. Out of those meetings (like the Iroquois Confederacy) came some of the most brilliant structures and decisions ever. That is one role I feel that the North American Permaculture Convergence could play.

We're mindful of the ecological footprint of people getting there, we're working to reduce that, and we're designing the event with the end goal that it will be maximally beneficial, productive and useful to people. I.e., Worth It. In order to ensure we achieve that, we have been soliciting feedback and co-creative input, and we continue to do so.

I am a producing kids media. Is there enough material out there to help kids grow up with permaculture?

That is great! I'm excited to hear that, Willi! That can be a real paradigm shifting niche - looking forward to seeing what you create. Kids' response to permaculture is so amazing. I am not aware of all the material that may exist, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that there is plenty of room for more quality material - we are far from the point of saturation.

The convergence is partnering with a pre-event training workshop specifically for teachers of children, where some of the material that does exist will be shared. There is a growing body of teachers bringing permaculture to kids, and the workshop will share some of the successful actions. A number of convergence attendees are interested in this topic, and there may be sessions on it.

What are your permaculture strategies when combating climate change? Do they relate to the ethics and principles?

I think that permaculture ethics are one of the most brilliant aspects of permaculture and alone have the potential to create major change. Education and raising awareness are key, ethics are key, and the principles applied are what will enable real mitigation of any and all ecological damage we are doing to this planet. All of them together create a powerful package. I have generally seen people respond with a lot of willingness and understanding when they are educated about how ecosystems work and given tools they can use to remedy the damage. When they don't have the tools, when they don't understand the interrelationships, it's harder to have the discussion.

For me, it is helpful to look at climate change in a whole systems context. Because permaculture addresses whole systems, it is often the case that the same remedies that address water depletion, soil depletion, pollution, and other environmental degradation also address atmospheric imbalances. Again, let's integrate these things. We need to stop abusing the earth. This is a sensible viewpoint. When people see that there are tools to do so and that they can use them, they become a lot more interested.

Some people think that the tipping point has passed and we cannot avoid experiencing an ecological meltdown, some think we still have time to turn things around. I don't engage in those arguments. I believe that regardless of which extreme it is or if things fall somewhere in between those extremes, we have an obligation to spread a viewpoint of ethical living and to provide knowledge of how to use the tools that better enable people to live that way - as widely and as deeply as possible, and that is where I try to stay focused.

Do you agree that permaculture and Transition could benefit from new (formalized) celebrations, annual events and holidays?

Sure - I think it could help in a number of ways. Maybe that's something that could be proposed at the convergence, by a working group or roundtable.

And by the way, people can start linking up with working groups now. Don't feel you have to wait until the convergence. The convergence will be a time to cross pollinate across regions, to meet face to face and create deeper relationships, to be introduced to what people are working on, to learn from each other, to meet new people, to celebrate. The longer term work will be done to some degree before and especially after the convergence. We are striving to look at how this energy can best be captured, and to be thoughtful designers with it. There is only so much that can be accomplished in three days.

This is one purpose of our Facebook group, to allow discussions to start now (and there are some occurring there).

Is the Convergence an incubator? A teaching space?

Both! It's a gathering of professionals, but it is also open to new designers and to people without design certificates as well who have been using or studying permaculture. We are striving to apply the principle of integrate, don't segregate and to design the convergence to offer something meaningful for just about everyone. This is your convergence. What is most important to you? We have been listening, and will continue to do so.

We will have a number of experienced presenters there and many learning opportunities such as designer showcase (where people can display their designs and discuss). We will have hands on activities.

But we will also have working groups, roundtables, facilitated networking areas, a Tea Room and other activities that will enable people to make valuable connections and actually get some work done, or just enjoy each other's company. We are hoping this venue will serve as a catalyst or jumping off point for many wonderful future relationships and happenings in the movement!

Thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed, Willi. You offered many thought provoking questions! We hope to see you and many others at the Convergence at the end of August!

“The alchemical process is a physical ritual that projects an inner state onto physical elements.” “Yes, I believe I understand how alchemy can work in the sound and visual arts; what’s just as clear is that today’s technology has definitely upped the ante.”

From: “Journey into Joseph Campbell Rising.” PlanetShifter.com Magazine Interview with Stephen Gerringer, Community Relations @ Joseph Campbell Foundation

Introduction

‘As many writers have discussed in PlanetShifter.com Magazine interviews, this sound is an alchemical or transmutation process, where the recombining of elements and the interactive process is more important than the product. Also examine myth as soundscape – or how the imagination of each listener both creates and recombines a story and how the meanings evolve as each collaboration changes the forces. These fragments can be re-mixed as each new group is created.

Differing from other musical composition, here sound is no longer the background but the foreground as the evolving sound collage drives the listener experience; sound is now a new story that we process and interpret individually and collectively.’

Building with Sound in Phases

Integrating sound symbols and short soundtracks into longer pieces could take multiple phases. There are many ways to go and relationships to consider. Three phases to consider include:

Phase One: Sound fragments > new interpretations > Alchemic Translation > Sound Symbol Recorded > Collected Symbols > (Story Buildings) New Myth > New Ritual

Phase Two: Building an Integrated soundtrack with new sound symbols via group collaboration

Phase Three: Joining the soundtrack(s) into a story or new myth (as in hearing the three SoundTracks in this study consecutively.

Integrating Alchemy, New Myth, Nature and Sound?

The sounds that we hear in Nature or play in our devices are embedded in our educational and cultural experiences to name two. The following new story foundation values and ethics are recommended as we integrate and act on many of the critical environmental issues like nuclear power, fracking, and climate change.

8 Key Elements in the New Mythology include:

1. Localization – back to sustainability and community; self-sufficiency
2. Nature- Centric
3. Spiritual
4. Future-based
5. Universal themes(s) and message
6. Para-Normal in conflict or characters
7. Initiation, Journey and Hero
8. Permaculture & Transition: values and principles

A New Sound Symbol Library for Global Community Storytelling

The proposed sound database or symbol library should have creative commons support, with collaborative tools for members to upload, transform and produce new soundtracks solo or together. It is envisioned that these musical works could assist in the development of new rituals and storytelling. The vision for this new sound symbol library is not the same as SoundCloud.com or Freesounds.org because of its innovative alchemy + myth engine.

Questions for Teachers & Students

a) If we can get the power of myth from storytellers and the printed page, then why not from SoundTracks?
b) Can a “Sound Myth” be a series of integrated sounds that combine to have a universal themes and message?
c) How do we translate or transmutate sound into visual cues, messages, initiation and global meaning?
d) How do we map the sound alchemy (transmutation) process as it supports other elements of the New Myth?
e) Describe the relationship between sound alchemy and initiation?
f) What is initiation in the Myth Lab process as Joseph Campbell describes it?
g) Are sound symbols or fragments connected to memories and new feelings?
h) Is initiation like a meditation? How?
i) What is a mythic experience?
j) Does a Sound Myth require a new language, code, or key?
k) Can silence be a sound symbol?

What is a symbol?

A symbol is something that represents an idea, process, fight or a physical entity. The purpose of a symbol is to communicate meaning. For example, a flooded neighborhood calls-out for wiser urban planning and environmental justice. Smoke stacks symbolize the dangers from industrial pollution. Numerals can be effective symbols, like the 350 Campaign logo. Personal names are symbols that represent individuals or families. Here a Polar Bear symbolizes melting glaciers. In cartography, an organized collection of symbols forms a legend, or key.

How do they work? Fail?

Legal, logical or emotional connections need to support and connect the symbol with the thing it represents. Some would also support the idea that symbols are opinion drivers in the political arena. Symbols, logos and slogans are commonly tied together to support a cause (on a tee shirt!). People, ecosystems, animals (steer!) and plants are often utilized as symbols. Symbols can fail when their theme, color scheme or shape does not support a larger message.

Are the graphic and color themes important in the symbol?

Within many symbols, there are colors or color palettes that help to “push” it’s meaning. If you replace the yellow in the bee with green, does this symbol have the same “clout?” But then - what does a bee symbolize?!

Are symbols important to alchemy and mythology?

For centuries symbols have been considered special instructions or codes and help build road maps to new adventure and visions for both alchemists and mythologists. As transmutational agents, symbols create attention, “knowledge-starts” and awareness at many levels of our being. The circle of wheat is both a labyrinth (journey) and a globally-connected food crop now under heavy pressure from changing weather patterns.

Questions to Consider -

1. To some, as in the house and family in the storm, symbols can support a universal meaning or message and can support a group’s unified belief and action plan. Can you name a symbol that is widely recognized in disaster work?

2. For climate change, there are 50 + symbols out there related to CO2, species loss and food crops. Should we create one symbol like the “PEACE” sign to empower the cause of reducing CO2 and building unity?
