“The New Sacrifice” - “Visions for New Mythology, Permaculture and the Transition Movement” - By Willi Paul, Planetshifter.com Media

Sacrifice is used metaphorically to describe selfless good deeds for others or a short term loss in return for a greater power gain, such as in a game of chess. Recently it has also come into use as meaning 'doing without something' or 'giving something up'

My definition for sacrifice is: “the practice of not having the same choices as before, where we must give-up certain lifestyle benefits and comforts.”

But ask this: Can giving up something actually be gaining something in return?
Is sacrifice always a negative? Is it the same result when we give up spiritual resources? What are these?

How do we sacrifice for Nature? In Nature?

* * * * * * *

How is the new sacrifice celebrated or practiced? Symbols are key to building the new sacrifice:

Symbols of Sacrifice in the Chaos Age -

• A front lawn garden. An empty swimming pool
• Giving up the automobile
• Last year’s toys
• Giving away old clothes
• Volunteering some time to a non-profit
• Reducing home or business water use
• Walking or using mass transit

How does sacrifice support resilience?

The two ideas are intertwined. Psychological resilience is defined as an individual’s ability to properly adapt to stress and adversity. It can be learned and developed by virtually anyone. Resilience should be considered a “learned behavior.” Here sacrifice can be implemented by resilience.

Sacrifice can also reduce stress and adversity with community training and family support.

In the New Mythology perspective, we all become “global sacrificers” for our mutual survival, creating new, non-religious values, customs, initiations, and traditions.

In the Transition Movement, we need to create new sacrifice customs based on sharing. In Permaculture ethics, sacrifice must be linked to care for community and planet.

New Mythology also teaches us that the community is the Hero - so the community is the “global sacrificial engine?”

Artifact > Alchemy > Imprintation > Community

Why we need new myths, poems, songs, and rituals?

“Just before his death Joseph Campbell was interviewed by Bill Moyers and that interview was later turned into the documentary, “The Power of Myth.” In this interview he postulated the idea that humanity was in need of new mythologies. Ones that were not rooted in the ancient world as all our current ones are. But myth’s that would help us navigate this new and strange world we are creating.”

Long-held institutions like the Catholic Church and governments like the City of Detroit have failed while corporations are fighting each other to frack our land and steal water rights. Capitalism will surely fail in the near term as climate changes raises the stakes on who has food to eat and land to live on. We are the Chaos Era.

We are running ourselves into the ground.

What now? A so-called Transition Era. 50 – 75 years from now what will our children believe? Sing? Will they find the tools and a healthy spirit to build a new world culture, based on sustainability values, local connections and alternative tools like permaculture and green technology? Or just more disposable gadgets and online communities driven by selfishness and advertising?

I believe processes like Myth Lab can pull us together – and past the darkness we face.

Myth Lab is a filter, a mapping process to a new world that is coming quickly:

Roundtable Interview with Willi by Peter

There are many kinds of stories. How does myth differ from other types?

I usually include short stories, poems and lyrics in my mythic design pool. Integrated with illustrative audio, video and/or graphics, I include story elements: plot, conflict, antagonists / protagonists, lesson(s).

Here is the current list of elements or influences that I use to produce New Myths:

1. Para-normal
2. Universal struggle / message
3. Journey, Initiation, Hero / Community
4. Symbols
5. Alchemy
6. Nature is Sacred
7. Threat of apocalypse
8. Digital - Non-Digital Collision
9. Future-based

Why do you like to work with myths?

+ I love the arguments between the classic and new mythologies. In this transition, a new world waits.

+ It is a great challenge to integrate new issues and movements in the design of a relevant global mythology.

+ There is a rich basket of ideas in the pursuit of myths. Have you captured a new idea lately?

+ Myths are steeped in falsehoods, values, politics, dogma and bias. Tricky stuff!

+ The goal of creating a set of new universal values is daunting. I welcome great challenges now.

You specialize in interviews, written and video. You made a number of Transition Tales videos for Transition Palo Alto at its Sharing Expos. Why do you use this method to get people to tell their story?

I suppose video is the “techno-flavor” of the times: the power / ego of the recorded live moment? I hasten to add that text interviews require less bandwidth and are easier to build, edit and search online. Many feel violated if you take their image. My 148 YouTube video library is now largely sidelined to Twitter, G+ and LinkedIn as I share my vision forward.

What are some elements of myth that you think particularly relate to Transition?

Localization is a key myth / transition duo, as is sharing resources. A third is that we need to build and practice new rituals with Transition lens.

Do you think Transition needs a hero? If so, what kind of figure might this be?

I have broken away from the Joseph Campbell crowd on the concept of the Hero. I no longer want individual Heroes but now support the community as the Hero. People with critical initiations and knowledge should return to the community from their journey to build resilience.

"Hi Willi, I've now listened to it, with my eyes closed.

I like the idea of using music, and sounds in general, in connection with evoking new symbols and myths. While listening, I was wondering how the feelings produced by this audio might fit into the 4 emotional connectors of your scheme, or evoke any symbols. Do you consider this music to be a symbol that was produced by the connectors,
or is the idea that the music/sounds will evoke new symbols?"

I want to know more about Myth Lab; in particular, we all tell ourselves stories to make sense of our world. How is myth different from these common stories?

Myth Lab and the New Myths incorporate permaculture and Transition training and values and take a proactive approach to classic mythology that is sleeping with the big boy brands and their trademarks that are not working in our age.

Myth Lab

The Myth Lab process model includes discovering an Artifact and mythic imprinting. The goal is to integrate permaculture, transition, Nature and sustainability with the emerging values and struggles in the Chaos Age. Myth Lab is designed as an interactive, open source and iterative experience. One goal is clear: we need to build new values and myths to build new Post-Chaos Era food and governance systems.

Myth Lab Key Terms:

Artifact – The New Myth Artifact is a Nature-Human symbol; examples include graffiti, a bill board, film clip, and a permaculture garden, with special powers and messages to both present and future.

Mythos – The pattern of basic values and attitudes of a people characteristically transmitted through myths and the arts. What is the mythos of the Post-Chaos Era?

New Mythology – Is a call for new Nature-based, globally integrated stories independent of any classic mythologies. New Mythology incorporates new symbols, alchemy and rituals with an eye on the future.

The Transition Movement includes new business exchange schemes where waste is used by another business; garden sharing that allows neighbors to re-use barren land. The movement encourages people to choose local food, including support for smart transit and sharing / barter.

Mythic Imprinting – Imprinting is defined as a two-way interaction with a selected Artifact that generates synergistic meaning for both creators and the reader. This iterative and transmutative process is grounded in the initiation, journey and hero work from Joseph Campbell and is one way that neighborhood artifacts can help participants generate new songs, poems and myths.

8 Key Elements in the New Mythology include:

1. Localization – back to sustainability and community; self-sufficiency
2. Nature- Centric
3. Spiritual
4. Future-based
5. Universal themes(s) and message
6. Para-Normal in conflict or characters
7. Initiation, Journey and Hero
8. Permaculture & Transition: values and principles

Do myths evolve? If so, how; and especially, can they be made to evolve by our conscious intention?

Humans create myths in response to their Age; once these stories are popularized, they are passed on to new generations largely unchanged. It is my contention that new myths are needed for our new challenges and dangers. Whether the classic myths are applicable wholly or in part to our Climate Crisis Age is a good TED question.

By creating new myths via conscious intention we evolve. When we stop creating new myths, we perish.

One recent myth I was reading on your website points to our near-future using the terms Pre-Chaos, Chaos, and Post-Chaos. Can you explain? Can we avoid Chaos, in your view? And are you hopeful we will transition to a sustainable future?

The piece that you are referring to is The Cascadia Funnel and the Last 3 Eras on Earth. New Myth 25.

This an early New Myth supported by permaculture ethics. I see that humankind is struggling against each other in the present Chaos Era but that we can prepare ourselves for cooperation in the Post-Chaos Era. Many of the New Myths are set in the Post-Chaos Era and are my teaching tools for our children’s survival.

How can we better spread myth and storytelling that bypasses the existing paradigm?

I’d love see Myth Lab in schools and in Scouting. We need to move on from the mind bending control of organized religion and enjoy the broad cultural changes and community building possible with new mythologies.

What is the future of myth as it leads us on our evolutionary path?

We are creating a new world together now and we are messing it up! New Myths are a road map to this new place. They will define the communities and Heros and initiations for the succession.

What is something I can do today to prepare for our Post-Chaos future?

Re-organize and control the allocators and resources at your City Hall. This would allow us better control over land use decisions and help to bring people together without the apathy and insider greed that we have now.

I also know you are a champion of permaculture. What would you like us to understand about that way of life?

Well, your sources are off here! Many months ago I came to the conclusion that permaculture (or technology) alone will not “save” us. Without land to design, permaculture is a 30 year old philosophy. I need to be an integrator, combining the best of many fads, movements and the like in a hybrid resource, like my LinkedIn Group (New Mythology, Permaculture & Transition) that makes new myths and brings down the corporate power structure that put us in this Era in the first place. Note that most permaculturists practice capitalism while getting unpaid interns to the dirt work.

Can you briefly describe how the arc of your life has brought you to the awareness you have today?

There are learning dots and consciousness jumps in my bio for sure. My love for Nature started early and continues to inform my Myth making today. I do not see this process as an arc however; how about a spark rising up from a camp fire?

What is an accomplishment you would like people to understand about you?

That I am striving to stay a spiritual being; to enjoy life long assistance from unseen and un-definable friendly forces.

What would you like to tell us that I haven’t asked about yet?

I was diagnosed at age 19 with bi-polar disorder. Approximately 22 years and 12 manic episodes later my psyche stabilized and the chaotic energies of manic –depression became an asset.

How can people best follow your work?

Everything gets loaded on PlanetShifter.com Magazine first regardless of other destinations.

The LightDNA Boys from the Blue-Green Galaxy” : New Myth #49

“How to price a promise? How to refuse a gift?” – WOX

* * * * * * *

In a bright, blue-green galaxy many, many LightDNAs from Earth, an eco- systems hums with equality for all and sharing is the key. Here love and respect drives all decisions and advanced energy keeps all warm and free.

On Earth, humankind remains in peril. Green houses gases; corporate greed, food toxics and many other life threatening issues have created a crossroads for survival.

The blue-green galaxy has a long, long timeline to support the evolution of life on Earth. Many there see the threats taking over the promise. Technologists from the blue-green galaxy (BGG) have been sending Earthlings gifts for eons including fire, the pyramids, sacred plants and recipes for smart homes and health. They diverted the implementation of the Internet from a tool for war making to public uses. HTML was sent as a new language to compliment the many national languages.

Then they sent human LightDNA and created Gates and Jobs. These men received visions from the galaxy including a primitive computer operating system, personal computers and smart phones. BGG’s big goal is to help humans find each and explore their common problems and visions.

* * * * * * *

As Gates and Jobs grew, they competed in the financial markets, and later became friends. Both understood the miracle and magic in software, the machine code “behind the screen.” MDOS begat Windows and soon HTML three flourished. To these men, it was all about operating systems and applications. And money.

The blue-green galaxy and their LightDNA alchemy created a new chance to get beyond the profit margins and uplift the earth to a new consciousness. Some would say for advanced communication channels for spiritual, technological, commercial, and mythological synergies.

* * * * * * *

But are Gates and Jobs gods? Angels? Thieves? Certainly both are examples of the universal quest for individualization and innovation in human beings, parallel to struggles that Joseph Campbell wrote about. Both created opportunities for humanity to change on a mass scale. Has their opportunity been realized?

At BGG, LightBeings are always discussing the negative impact of so much technology gone very wrong:

Humans crashing autos while texting

Theft of smart phones

Computer viruses

Hacking software

Stealing computer systems for evil purposes

Illegal downloading

Illegal dumping of computer hardware on 3rd world countries

Pornography on the Internet

* * * * * * *

Gates and Jobs: are they Heroes like Prometheus? Or just wily profit takers, dangling cosmic gifts that might raise our collective consciousness?

Did he find in India the steel that was to allow him to survive an ouster from the company he founded and then to return and rise to unexpected heights? After returning to Atari, Jobs’ rekindled his friendship with high school mate Steve Wozniak who was working at Hewlett-Packard then. Together, the two Steves launched a startup called Apple Computer from Jobs’ garage in Palo Alto, California. It’s hard to say if India’s less than favored status with Apple can be attributed to Steve Jobs’ early experience with the country. But it is definitely true that it was then that the foundations were laid for the titanic, perfection-obsessed, often ruthless personality he was to become later.

This interactive workshop begins with a neighborhood artifact (Nature video, graffiti or short story) and considers permaculture, Transition, Nature and alchemy elements to produce a New Myth!

You can also check-out all 49 New Myths.

The Artifact is the base information that initiated the created process in the first place. For Myth Lab #49, we drive this emergence with a South San Francisco Mural about Prometheus by Nicolai Larsen.

By transmutating the artifact, we integrated permaculture, Transition, Nature and alchemy with the struggles in the Chaos Age to produce New Myth #49. Myth Lab is designed as an interactive, open source and iterative experience. One goal is clear: we need to build our own messages and new myths to support our new food and governance systems.

Key Terms:

Process Model – See below. The five stages in writing new myths are: Discovery; Analyze; Mythic Imprintation; create the new myth; and Sharing and Journey On.

Mythos – The pattern of basic values and attitudes of a people characteristically transmitted through myths and the arts.

New Mythology – Is a call for new Nature-based, globally integrated stories without allegiance to any classic mythologies. New Mythology incorporates new symbols, new alchemy and climate change era rituals and is built for the future.

The Transition Movement includes new business exchange schemes where waste is used by another business; Transition is garden sharing that allows gardeners to re-use barren lands; the movement encourages people to choose local food and offer support for smart bicycle and mass transit systems.

Mythic Imprinting – Imprinting is defined as a two-way interaction with a selected Artifact that has generates synergistic meaning for both participants and the Artifact. Called “mythic imprinting” in the Myth Lab, this iterative and transmutative process is grounded in the initiation, journey and hero work from Joseph Campbell and is one way that neighborhood artifacts can help neighbors generate new songs, poems and myths.

”The Quarry Men:” A Conversation on New Mythology

with Carridine Poran and Willi Paul

Carridine invited Willi to talk after reading tens of Willi’s interviews with people involved with permaculture and mythology. Willi’s compelling applications of mythology to social and environmental crises turn the familiar conversation surrounding myth on its head. Carridine also found his commitment to online archiving admirable. He invited Willi to have a conversation he believed would be productive of a greater synthesis between depth experience and social organizing for sustainable change.

You can find Carridine and Willi at the New Mythology Permaculture and Transition Group and the Depth Psychology Alliance - New Mythology Group.

Here is the first round of that conversation.

*******

ONE

CP: I notice again and again people asking you, "Yes, but why do you call your stories myths?"

WP: This is a great question. I am advocating a new “brand” of mythology that fits our struggles and transitions. The foundation in this shift are my 8 Key Elements in the New Mythology:

1. Localization – back to sustainability and community; self-sufficiency
2. Nature- Centric
3. Spiritual
4. Future-based
5. Universal themes(s) and message
6. Para-Normal in conflict or characters
7. Initiation, Journey and Hero
8. Permaculture & Transition: values and principles

My tales have transformed the hero, initiation and journey from Joseph Campbell’s vision with modern fears about climate change, mass destruction of Nature and a dash of Hollywood. It matters not how long the pieces are, just the alchemitized struggles and lessons.

Archetypes for my new myths are modernized as well. Archetypes are very powerful images or dreams in our creative tool kit that can offer insights and guidance on our journey:

Joseph Campbell was often asked how a new mythology was going to develop. His answer was that it would have to come from poets, artists, and filmmakers. In this talk, Campbell explores what he called creative mythology—the way in which artists can and do give a sense of the transcendent in a universe apparently empty of meaning.

So, in my 50 New Myths, it’s not about “story vs. new myths,” it’s much more about the revitalized power of myth!

//

CP: But is there a difference between myth and other kinds of stories? People ask why you call your myths because they are expecting something else when they hear the word myth. I'd like to explore your notion of myth as well as my own. Not only that, I'd like to somehow consider all you are doing and all the themes you are wrestling with in relation to what I know of myth as certain kinds of stories. You say your interest is in "therevitalized power of myth" and I'd like to consider that revitalization as a process in relation to Campbell‘s idea of creative mythology.

I think that first demands that we ask what mythology is. What is its power? That is what I see as the relevance of older mythologies, Greek and Roman or otherwise. We can investigate them and their uses in their own societies. They were connected to religious cults and rituals, to initiation rites as well as to popular entertainment. Part of the question is where these stories originate. They have been studied for more than two thousand years and a wide variety of meaning has been derived from them. Still there is no consensus on what a myth is. Part of the power of myth seems to be this mutability.

I think it would be very interesting to compare your 8 Key Elements in the New Mythology to concerns in these old mythologies. I think there are many parallels. And I think the main differences to be found are based on thedifferent crises being addressed.

Where both could be said to be concerned with nature and spirituality and human truths (universal themes) and values, yours are distinguished by the call to return: to return to sustainable (future-based) ways of living, to the retrieval of meaning out of meaninglessness. Another way they are distinguished is by the gigantic problems your myths must address. These concerns however can still be likened to old concerns: in many of the old Greek Myths you see a concern for staying within bounds and the consequences of boundless desire. I think a core value in all sustainability work and all planning for seven generations type thinking is the notion of conservation, of respecting limits. Myths in both eras hammer home the dangers of greed and over-consumption.

TWO

WP: You write: “Part of the question is: where do these stories come from?” It is beyond my scope to tell you where the classic myths come from; it is empowering to know where mine come from. This gut-level awareness for new rituals, the new symbols, sacredness and alchemy make new myths way more powerful than the old ones, yes? To be slightly critical: the old myths are like “TV re-runs” while the new myths are bursting out of our current predicaments. A huge matter of degree of importance; of nostalgia vs. a fire in the backyard!

I just discovered the notion and underpinnings of Campbell’s creative mythology. This is exciting because I now have a higher relationship with his vision and the world. I honestly did not know that this was the next stage of the journey until I read this:

“In the context of traditional mythology, the symbols are presented in socially maintained rites, through which the individual is required to experience, or will pretend to have experienced, certain insights, sentiments and commitments. In what I'm calling creative mythology, on the other hand, this order is reversed: the individual has had an experience of his own - of order, horror, beauty, or even mere exhilaration-which he seeks to communicate through signs; and if his realization has been of a certain depth and import, his communication will have the force and value of living myth-for those, that is to say, who receive and respond to it of themselves, with recognition, un-coerced.”

So, indeed, creative mythology is my current example of the revitalized power of myth.

As to your reflection on the crisis of the day (or yester year), I agree in principle but technology to destroy the planet with one button or protracted regional conflict seems to separate the old from the new mythologies.

Can you explain what you mean by seven generations type thinking?

THREE

CP: First: by seven generations type thinking I mean the attitude that one must take in making decisions: one must consider the world not just in terms of the effects and rewards for oneself but in terms of seven generations of people that come after. (See Oren Lyons.)

Yes, our gut-level awareness of new myths makes them way more powerful than the old ones for us. In the Joseph Campbell lecture on creative mythology you linked to, I liked that he pointed out that the environment of the old myths had passed away and so they really couldn't be relevant to us. Their guts and our guts react to different things. If I live in a modern city, a Bible written for shepherds who lived 2000 years ago is probably not going to reach me at a gut level. We have to explore our own images arising from our own "current predicaments" and "fires in the backyard" as you say. The old myths are indeed "TV re-runs", and re-runs from the very beginning of TV: Dobie Gillis and Beaver Cleaver. It is hard for us even to imagine what might have been enjoyable or useful about those stories.

I agree with you when you say "but technology to destroy the planet with one button or protracted regional conflict seems to separate the old from the new mythologies." This is what I meant when I said, "your [new myths] are distinguished [from the old myths] ... by the gigantic size of the problems your myths must address."

I appreciate Campbell's notion of creative mythology and I'm glad you got a lot out of it. The quote you posted includes a description of a process of how myths come about:

"In what I'm calling creative mythology, on the other hand, this order is reversed: the individual has had an experience of his own - of order, horror, beauty, or even mere exhilaration-which he seeks to communicate through signs; and if his realization has been of a certain depth and import, his communication will have the force and value of living myth-for those, that is to say, who receive and respond to it of themselves, with recognition, un-coerced."

This is one answer to my question "where do myths come from?" And I think the process you have been using is like this, for instance with Myth Number 1 about the Gulf Oil spill. There's the horrific event. And then you add to it the story of the leatherback turtles. That is your way of communicating your realization concerning the experience.

When I ask this question of process, I mean how do we arrive at the new myths? The process Campbell describes is one of many. For example, there is the process described by Robert Bosnak in his recent free lecture, Introduction to the course on Alchemical Psychology.

Bosnak describes an alchemical process parallel to Campbell's Creative Mythology. It involves the same elements as Campbell's does: a person's experience, a sign or image (in alchemical terms, a tincture/corpus) used to communicate the inspiration, and the inspiration itself -- "the force and value of living myth." Bosnak is applying his alchemy to psychology and individual healing whereas Campbell is talking about stories for the individual as a socially responsible self. A more significant difference I think is the source of the creative inspiration.

Bosnak talks about the lyrical organization of our perceptions in relation to these elements: (1) experience, (2) image and (3) inspiration (approx. 10 minutes into his lecture.) And what is this lyrical organization of our perceptions? As I understand it, as it resonates with my interests, lyrical organization would be reality apprehended or judged as that which makes sense or has meaning rather than the more familiar material organization of our perceptions which apprehends Reality as anything which has an existence independent of us – in spite of us, regardless of us. For me, this may be the whole of the question regarding new mythology and our attempts to tackle the huge problems of our time. What is our relation to reality, to truth, to nature?

Following this introduction about lyrical organization, Bosnak starts talking about the acquisition of an image from a dream encounter and an interpretive processing of the image through alchemical stages of "heat.” There are two chief differences between Campbell's process and the process Bosnak is describing. First rather than a person having an experience and then "seeking to communicate it through signs" Bosnak describes the person being given an image from "deep deep down." It’s not that the person has an experience which they understand and then chooses a way of narrating it to others. In Bosnak’s process, the person doesn't understand the image. The second difference then is the discovery of the meaning of the image through these stages of interpretation.

I think it is this difference in process that allows for a truly powerful, healing realization in Bosnak’s alchemy: the dream image is created by a much deeper source than our conscious inventiveness. Coming as an influx from a more earth-connected or natural, more ecological mind, the image speaks the language of Nature. Because of this deep source, free from our alienated ways of thinking, it is capable of offering great insight with which the soul can be tied to the contemporary disaster in a much more intimate and holistic way. This does not exclude conscious inventiveness: it only adds the requirement that that inventiveness be interpreted by this more ecological mind.

Bosnak gives an in depth example of this process of working with images starting around 37 minutes into the lecture. I suggest starting to listen earlier for the procedural context. Bosnak describes his process in the terms that his teacher James Hillman used.

Tell me what you think.

FOUR

WP: To start, I would gently remind us that Myth Number 1 also includes my first recipe for new myth making, a process that is later refined in Myth Lab.

Is not Nature more powerful, direct and free source of inspiration and guidance than the “intellectual corps.” of psychology?

"Deep deep down” is not easily identified or felt these days with the disruptive power of television, Internet and “wide-max” theatres. We must be leery of “experts or writers or psychologists, etc.” who interchange the terms mythology and alchemy. My alchemy types support symbol making and new myths. Alchemy is the spiritual driver for the new world. Here are some types of alchemy to consider when building new myths and rituals:

• Imaginative Alchemy: This alchemy excites and creates our ideas, conflicts and even prayers in our brains.

• Eco Alchemy: Seeds, soil, plants and animals living, birthing and dying in an inter-related system pulsed by eco alchemy.

• Shamanic Alchemy: This is alchemy transmutates healing through ceremonies and rituals lead by a trained spiritual leader.

• Sound or Sonic Alchemy: The ancient alchemic power of song from cave rants to classical music and rock’n’roll.

• Digital Alchemy: Electronic learning and feeling working with computers including chat text, email and documents.

• Community Alchemy: People working with people: transforming attitudes, sharing ideas and making plans.

• Earth Alchemy: Planetary consciousness building and human evolution on a universal scale.

Furthermore, archetypes in my quiver are defined as very powerful images or dreams in our creative tool kit that can offer insights and guidance on our journey:

Out of Nature evolves permaculture – a blend of science in spirit is so needed to get to the Post-Chaos Era. It’s time to integrate permaculture and transition principles with the tools of the new world:

FIVE

CP: I can say that I have read through your process as it is stated on the page where Myth Number 1 appears and as it is refined in Myth Lab. That's why I think I was able to map it onto both Campbell's creative mythology and Bosnak's alchemical psychology.

The lists you sent in this e-mail are, I think, the reason why people ask you, "What has this to do with myth?" People ask you that question because these lists don't communicate the grand scale of your work. I hope through this correspondence to get to the place where people recognize in your work all of these listed elements in their mythic identity

.

If there was any writer in this mix who interchanged the terms mythology and alchemy, I was that writer. I did so only to talk of similarities of process.

Nature is indeed a more powerful, direct and free source of inspiration and guidance than the intellect or any human being's attempt to produce wisdom by juggling generalized intellectual ideas. I shared Bosnak's words to talk about symbols given by nature -- through dream and vision. I wasn't selling Bosnak or his approach to things. I looked at Bosnak's video myself to confirm that at the core of what he is offering (a course, a book, accreditation) is a simple process which I am (and you are) already practicing. The only question is at what level Nature is being engaged.

I think the greatest contribution to community to be made by what used to be called social ecology is the recognition that Nature is the first symbol user. Dreams come from Nature, they come through our bodies which are part of nature, and they come to us, to our minds, which we have somehow concluded are not part of nature.

What we now call psychology and complicate with so many layers of jargons and credentials is first and foremost given to us by Nature. Through dreams, Nature instructs us in the nature of truth and balance. We ourselves have grown so far from such truths that we require alchemies and other arts to transform our self-talk back into something that can understand our own Nature.

I agree that the deep deep down is not easily felt or accessed. But that is one of our crucial problems. I do believe we can turn off the distraction boxes that have been built for us -- not for all time maybe, but for time enough to allow for meditation, reflection and contact with real things. Distraction is the problem of the consumer and the tool of the capitalist. More and more I think we must reject the identity of consumer and rebuild the identities of citizen, community member, mentor, sage, shaman...

SIX

WP: In terms of sources, my interviews continue to offer insight and directions; PR for the interviewees and education / connections for readers. Out of all of the titles that folks have given me since 2009, teacher (shaman) is the role that works best. And there is no “grand scale of work” here! Please do not think of it as such. I am just seeing the pieces and laying them down, like a railroad engineer for others to follow.

As a species, humans are in a juvenile stage in terms of symbols and alchemy. Is my secret wish that Nature-borne symbols and alchemy will one day help to replace the mindless tyranny in organized religion.

If we can get back to Nature by destroying it, then we might live through the great paradox of climate change or the Chaos Age. This is one theme in my 50 New Myths.

Question 1: “Nature is the first symbol user,” do you mean “symbol generator”? I recommend this piece for symbol transmutations:

Question 2: “Through dreams, Nature's instructs us in the nature of truth and balance.” I would appreciate more detail here.

Question 3: Is yoga alchemy? Meditation? Exercise?

Question 4: What are some New Myths about the consumer?

SEVEN

CP: We will have to agree to disagree on the subject of the "grand scale of your work." Just considering the interviews alone reveals a grand scale. And I would think you are the only person who has seen all the pieces because you are the one who has laid them all down. You have mental access to the contents of all of it. I don't mean to suggest that you remember everything everybody has said, but I bet as you talk to people little bells ring and get you thinking, "oh this reminds me of something so and so said when I interviewed them."

In terms of the mindless tyranny of organized religion, I'd say that is one of the big bad guys to be included in a new mythology. Not organized religion as such but an embodiment of the various states of mind which make it up. I think when we look at the original inspirations for religions, the burning bush, the dying god, or you look at the large forms that arise in the history of any given religion, Saints and Archangels as dragon slayers, Madonna and Child, we can see that Nature-borne symbols and alchemy (or something akin to it) have always been present.

Organized religion, or the bad in it people often emphasize, is an embodiment of negative states of mind. These states can be characterized. That is, they can be cast as the characters of myths. The interactions between these characters can be dramatized. It is the Interactions between these states of mind which mummify the vital nature-borne symbols Bosnak describes in his alchemical process. Organizing religion has meant adding intercessors and harum-scarum until the symbols become permanent Mysteries. These are not the mysteries of alchemy which open to investigation as discovery and transformation. Instead they are- permanent Mysteries there to solidify the power of a priestly class; that class claims sole right to these mysteries of them and so too to an authority than demands obedient ignorance.

The relation between these two states of mind, Caste Priest and Caste Suppliant, as a permanent conflict becomes a recurrent narrative in a new mythology. Identified as states of mind in relationship rather than solely as “organized religion,” the priest and suppliant my theme can be seen to play out in other institutions, from City Hall to the Psalters.

Of the remaining four questions, I will save three for tomorrow and answer one in a brief introductory way. Question number 4: New myths about the consumer: I think in composing myths we first build a pantheon and a setting, like you do here. One God or Power is Priest/suppliant, One God or Power is Producer/Consumer or encouraged appetite. The setting, too, you've already got going, for instance the Chaos era, which is a situation as much as it is a place or period of time. Once you have these, and they are True Representations, the myths tell themselves. So arriving at True Representations is most important: What is an example of the consumer god? What is its power? My immediate answer to that is, did you see Spirited Away? The character of No Face in that movie is the character of the consumer. It helps if you understand the director's point of view, I've quoted it on my blog:

EIGHT

Hi C: Note that the film maker references "survival" twice in the first paragraph

“I would say that this film is an adventure story even though there is no brandishing of weapons or battles involving supernatural powers. However, this story is not a showdown between right and wrong. It is a story in which the heroine will be thrown into a place where the good and bad dwell together, and there, she will experience the world. She will learn about friendship and devotion, and will survive by making full use of her brain. She sees herself through the crisis, avoids danger and gets herself back to the ordinary world somehow. She manages not because she has destroyed the ‘evil,’ but because she has acquired the ability to survive.

Are there modern day survival myths? Do they involve individuals or groups? Of course, it's back to the Chaos Age v. the Post-Chaos Age....

NINE

CP: I'm working on the questions you asked me about nature and dreams. In the meantime, if you want to get a sense of me you can read my blog entries on my Grove project: here's what I've written there grouped by theme. You can scroll all the way to the bottom or you can read them backwards, I'm not sure what difference it will make.

I'll do my best to answer all the left-over questions in one e-mail.

I'm going to combine the third question and the fourth question in one answer:

Question 4: How is this vision (of the Grove) instructing us today? Or has it morphed digital?

(Not sure what morphed digital means: perhaps you mean that the place where the mentor appears in now the internet?)

Question 3: Is yoga alchemy? Meditation? Exercise?

I think I've already said that I don't really have much of a relationship to alchemy. I have a way of doing my work that I am pleased with, that I think is authentic and that is based in personal experience. That is not to say that it is unique. In so far as it deals with real things and alchemy or active/embodied imagination or creative mythology deal with real things, there are parallels between all these ways of doing the work, including my own.

The little I understand about alchemy I described in one of my previous answers: in short, it is a process of interaction with an object capable of yielding transformative insight. The alchemist brings the whole force of inquiry to bear on a super-dense image: the image “heats up” until it explodes releasing “scintilla.” My process of working on the Grove very closely parallels that. I was given a dream image in response to the death of my mentor. In an effort to honor him and to heal my grief, I concentrated on this image in order to evolve it into the perfect tribute. Having to materialize this thing in physical space and to design its aspects to ensure that there were appropriate to his memory, I brought to bear previous decades of study and work. The result was countless insights and a greater wholeness within me than I had ever possessed before.

I take your question regarding yoga et al, in terms of this understanding of transformative work; is yoga, exercise, meditation alchemy? I would say yes. The continual practice of exercise generally speaking can promote health and regulate mood and bring clarity of purpose. That can certainly be a transformation to a person who previously lacked those things. Meditation generally speaking also seems like alchemy insofar as it transforms consciousness and can bring about progressive improvement. Yoga, I think, is clearly a parallel to alchemy and that parallel can be made clear by seeing it in terms of prayer: Yoga is often seen as the step beyond prayer, that is, beyond the faith that directs wishes toward a deity. Yoga is a practice which intends to bring about direct experience of deity. I read somewhere, "It is not enough to believe in God, one must endeavor to touch God." Through intense bodily regulation yoga achieves higher and higher states of consciousness.

Your fourth question can be answered on several levels: How is this vision (of the Grove) instructing us today?

On an archetypal level the vision of the grove instructs us as it has since its first appearance in consciousness. And how has this archetype instructed us? As I just read in the brief essay available online by Craig Cholquist, WHAT GOOD IS AN ARCHETYPE: "As Jung pointed out, an archetypal image left unresearched is no more comprehensible than an ancient baptismal font whose history remains unknown." A vision, above all, must be explored and as it is explored many insights come and the explorer grows, and as the explorer grows, the instruction can deepen and branch off in new unexpected directions.

On a historical level, how is this ancient Greek vision of a grove in the underworld instructing us today? First and foremost, it instructs by its continued reappearance. It instructs us in the ways that we are connected to the rest of humanity past and present.

On a contemporary level, the grove can raise up our own structures to the level of the mythologized shapes from the past: what more is the mentor in the grove than the teacher in the classroom? Why do we sense the teacher in the classroom as such a lessening of the mentor in the grove? To me, the ability to see this likeness calls us to act in front of a class out of a holistic and heightened sense of education, making the act of teaching today not just a mechanical communication of skills but rather a passing on of the wisdom necessary to live a good and satisfying life. These days the vision of the grove instructs me to encourage mentoring relationships.

TEN

CP: Okay, now I'll answer question one and two together. Question 1: “Nature is the first symbol user,” do you mean “symbol generator”? I mean Nature is the first symbol user not the first symbol generator. Although I have to say reading your and Metcalfe's Primer, I was most excited by the idea of the myth generator: To find some way of harvesting dreams from the internet to create a world wide web of dreams! In that net, we could catch, like schools of fish, commonalities constellating tens of thousands of dreams into myth formations, monsters, adventures, pantheons, a new global mythology! The gods are human fantasies in swarm. They are our murmuration. Myths are our stories about these larger human patterns. This idea is very, very exciting and inspiring! I would like to help in any way I can to bring such a thing into existence!

But yes, I mean Nature is the first symbol user in the same sense that I mean what I say in what you quote for question 2: “Through dreams, Nature's instructs us in the nature of truth and balance." The easiest way to proceed to elaborate on this is to again quote Craig Cholquist, this time from his essay on Jung's Red Book, from page eight, about dead center in that writing:

"This tree would show up in a dream at the end of Jung's life, the roots glowing with alchemical gold. Nature imagery never strayed far from Jung's deepest thoughts about the psyche. His observation that at bottom psyche merges with world marks him out as a grandfather of Ecopsychology. [my emphasis]” Here's thewhole essay:

"At bottom psyche merges with world" is what I mean when I say Nature is the first symbol user and that through dreams Nature instructs us in the nature of truth and balance. An example of that balance is Jung’s idea (approximately) that all conscious thoughts are half thoughts. Thinking only half a thought impels psyche to present in a dream the other half, the flipside of that thought. If you are too holy, you will dream of finding pleasure in something that defiles you. That's a balancing act. But what necessitates this balance of the "sacred and the profane"?

Consider this other quote from Chalquist's essay on the Red Book: "In later work Jung writes that when the ego has exhausted its efforts, the unconscious should be left to itself to do further work. The Cabiri now appear: gnomes who labor like dwarves under the earth. "You want to pull up with your own force what can only rise slowly....Spare yourself the trouble, or you will disturb our work." Jung takes the hint and takes a break from inner journeying for a while. (Hillman would criticize psychoanalysis one day for trying to dig every stone out of the quarry: “But what about the quarry?”)"

The important thing for me in that quote is that last question "What about the Quarry?" To me, this is a question that strikes the same target I was aiming at when I asked, “what necessitates this balance?” How do we account for the quarry? We have these qualities sacred & profane -- separated out of an original unity: maybe that original unity is the quarry. The quarry is an original abundance as well as a geometrization of that abundance.

All the stuff within consciousness pre-exists consciousness. It is something there to be conscious of. People have this ability to imbibe or embody a quality like "holy" and if they’re feeling too holy, they’re out of whack and something deep within them will send a message that says, "get real" or "act NATURAL." Or as Osho says it, "Live the way Nature intended you to live."

Who sends these messages? Who makes them up? I don't. You don't. We are subjected to them and dependent on them just as we are subjected to and dependent upon sleep. These meanings are made in the place deep within you (and without you) where psyche and world meet.

intro

Why are myths and stories so important to you?

Ironically, myths and stories are important because we have so few that have any value or integrity for today’s issues. I say that classic myths are burnt-out and Hollywood’s “big screens” are hopelessly redundant in themes and soap operatic in message. Game Boys and shoot-’em-ups are all the rage at home, but there are no valuable myths in the depiction of white soldiers shooting up Arabs or undergrads doing beer bongs! What spurs me to write my own new myths are the ethics and principles of permaculture. But this so-called new “soil design science” is down on the idea of a spiritual / culture kit, and desperately needs visionary and sustainable partners to widen and realize a “community-garden future” without electricity, gasoline and nation-sponsored war.

Shared Work / Experience > Result + Evaluation > Celebration / Reflection / Lesson / Prayer = Ritual

* * * * * **

Prelude

‘A ritual is a stereotyped sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and designed to influence (unusual) entities or forces on behalf of the actors' goals and interests.’ Rituals may be prescribed by the traditions of a community…. Rituals are characterized by traditionalism,… sacral symbolism and performance and are a feature of almost all known human societies, past or present.’

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritual

“… one of our most ancient methods for bringing people together is through rituals. When stepping into a sacred space, such as a festival or community garden, you pass through a certain threshold. You are able to step outside of your individuation and participate as one part of a greater whole; the community. The very nature of shared experience requires a certain level of communion.”

http://permaculturenews.org/2013/08/28/festival-culture-the-importance-o...

“Certainly a great deal, perhaps even most, of religious ritual has arrived at mere rote routine or even emptiness after a couple of thousand years. The ritual itself had replaced the sanctity of the real events it was meant to represent. However, ritual is valuable and can have great depths of meaning, can even be a gateway to inspiration, even enlightenment, … and from my observation, the principal ceremony to mark Quaker milestones is a meal: baby and new member welcomings, newcomers’ brunch, graduation, Friendly sevens — all revolve around a table where Friends are gathered to share food. These are not very complex events, but nevertheless, in their regularity and simplicity, maintain the meal as an important ritual celebration.

http://lightwithspirit.wordpress.com/2010/03/08/ritual-among-friends-qua...

“Ritual is meant to inform, educate, and care for the soul and spirit in such a way that inner energy can blossom forth. Rituals encourage people to express their creative potential fully and also connect people with a sense that they are on a team which includes both other human people (in the form of community), and unseen forces of the Other world (like ancestors and allies and nature). It is not a technical, or engineered, chain of logic which connects a ritual to any effectiveness – it is an attempt to enroll whole systems in alliance for healing, movement, birthing the new life that wants to join this world.”

http://mythicnature.com

“The mythic images associated with the winter solstice help us shift our identification from the individual human condition to that which is eternal, bringing us into alignment with the powers of nature that operate in the universe, and in ourselves—thus generating harmony between macrocosm and microcosm. Amid the dark and cold of the long night, we celebrate the birth of hope.”

JCF MythBlast - Winter 2013 Solstice Edition

“Ceremony and rituals have long played a vital and essential role in Native American culture. Often referred to as “religion,” most Native Americans did not consider their spirituality, ceremonies, and rituals as “religion,” in the way that Christians do. Rather, their beliefs and practices form an integral and seamless part of their very being. Like other aboriginal peoples around the world, their beliefs were heavily influenced by their methods of acquiring food, – from hunting to agriculture. They also embraced ceremonies and rituals that provided power to conquer the difficulties of life,….”

Introduction

Rituals have been invented and enjoyed by humans for eons. There is much connective tissue here including historic trends, sacred rites, religious routines, myths and laws.

The 5 new rituals in this work are synchronistic with ideas from my vision: tribes, the new mythology, in the Post-Chaos Era. Tribes are approximately 20 – 25 humans and their animals and plants are best viewed as the sustainable and spiritual unit for survival in the future.

Some rituals are fading (like classic myths) while new ones rise as our notion of the sacred evolves. At base, rituals are time-based and Nature-grounded. Finally, one could argue that there are major and minor rituals.

Key Permaculture & Transition Values

It’s time to gear-up permaculture and transition principles with the tools of the new world:

• Appreciation for land preservation and environmental sensitive crops (non-GMO)
• Saving and sharing seeds
• Knowledge Sharing
• Inclusivity (Youth to Seniors)
• Resilience (back-up systems)
• Localization (local food and alt economic systems)
• Re-use & Re-cycle
• Alternative energy sources & practices
• Social justice
• Obtaining and using the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC)

Seek the Archetypical

Archetypes are very powerful images or dreams in our creative tool kit that can offer insights and guidance on our journey:

• Growing Season / Cycle
• Spiritual Healing
• Visioning
• Giving Thanks

Preparing for New Rituals?

Here is a checklist to reference when you are testing the ritual waters:

• Who is leading the event?
• How long is the ritual?
• When does it take place?
• What are the words?
• What is the foundation for the event?
• How is it integrated with others vales, ethics, events, practices?
• What are the symbols and songs?
• What materials / space are required?

New Symbols for Rituals

Here are six new symbols from my work in sacred permaculture that can be utilized in the new rituals:

• Diversity (Soil)
• Growth (Seeds)
• Harvest (Basket)
• Transformation (Fire + Smoke)
• Stewardship (Compost Pile)
• Localization (Community Well)

Stirring New Alchemy & Ritual

5 New Nature-based Rituals for the Permaculture Transition

Abundance Dance (Celebrating Nature)
Winter
Multi-stage art & music festival

Compost Festival (Seed Sharing & Harvest Share)
Spring & Fall
Planting Tools, Dirt and Food Meet-up

Annual Cascadia Convergence (Concert)
Late Fall
Big Education and Networking Event

Food Forest Work Trek Weekends (Caring for the Earth & People)
Early Spring
Multiple Community Work Actions with Evening Pot Lucks

Resilience Expo – Practical Seminars and Clothing Share
4 times per year
Local Community Education and Support for Basic Needs

Conclusions

Fair to say that the modern rock concert is about big money, big egos, big security, big noise, big lights, big stages, big separation; big banality. But are these scenes a ritual? In contrast, Post-Chaos Era rituals can be hosted through reduced fee / barter exchanges, Nature-centricity, camp fires, mini-community theatre, bottom up and kid focused, not top down corporate profit chasing, not idol worship, but with community- based values, organizing and storytelling.

Integrated sacred action, new myths and rituals can start to each Tribe and then their networks.

Are your traditions - rituals?

“To me ritual is the sacred art of stopping, listening and being. Whether we gather as a group to celebrate and connect, to share the inspiration of tribe or dance in the insanity of personal connection and vision. Ritual allows the humdrum of perceived normality to collapse beneath delicious connection as we reach out to our inspiration, to our ancestors and the spirits of place. Ritual is that place outside of time where we express the connection between tribe and land.” Kris Hughes

Please don’t tell me the seasons are gone?

*******

“A season is a subdivision of the year, marked by changes in weather, ecology, and hours of daylight. Seasons result from the yearly revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the plane of revolution. In temperate and polar regions, the seasons are marked by changes in the intensity of sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface, variations of which may cause animals to go into hibernation or to migrate, and plants to be dormant.”

In a very few years, when the planet is de-oiled, super-parched, and seed toxic, our Gaian lover will turn into an unforgiving “blister master”, and the notion of four romantic seasons, including the fall harvest and the Thanksgiving celebration, will be deleted from our post-digital brains.

The Endless Dry Season

Given that the traditional four seasons are tied to the Growing Cycle: Composting, Seed Planting, Weeding / Watering and Harvest, a dry parched planet will no longer express or support this organic dance. A terrifying mono season is coming that is only dry and hot. Any artistic ritual that boils up from this egg fry might include displays of shedding, cave dwelling and theatric stages with mock cooling winds.

A Sun-torched planet will cook our eyes, ears, throats and skin forcing us to “hide from the fireball”, the Blister Season will force mankind to hunt and peek under cooler Moon-enlightened spaces. If inter-community war is still needed to capture resources, Blister will make obtaining and stock piling water the end game.

Blister Season Mythology?

With Nature out of the spiritual equation, the Blister season will be separated in two camps: scavengers vs. resourcers. Since there are no seasons to guide Post-Chaos Era human farming and soul searching, only survival stories and clubs will rule. This tricky and final dry chapter in our ritual evolution could exterminate mythology all together, given that we use it so infrequently today anyway.

Moon glow lipstick and hand printed cave symbols will not save you here.

HISTORY > RETROFIT

The old train watch tower in the center of the Tribe circle and food forest was retrofitted over ten years ago with a lighthouse lens from a Bolinas, CA antique store. Legend has it that good spirits came with the 305 lb. orb, a beacon that generates more than shadows and a safe path home. The “Watch Tower” as the Tribe calls it, is a copy of a Detroit rail road look-out hut that was manned in support of human track switching much preferred over an electronic hand (and mandated by local law).

SITE MAPPING > ZONES

The tower has a three-part functionality:

(A) Light / Shadow Beacon – During a sunny Cascadia day the structure spills a shadow on rough stone bollards and around the sundial so the community can orchestrate their schedules and chores. At night, a security light shines in four directions to help guide travelers and vendors.

(B) Pigeon Coop – guano for the garden and the traditional winged-mail

(C) Tool Locker – permaculture tools like shovels, spades, twine

In four quadrants, the food forest is mostly fruit trees with some leafy greens and flowers woven in. Adjacent to the circular food forest, four outer land uses have been established:

(A) Horse Corral – these animals include donkeys and pull the small carts on the rail way.

(B) Compost Mill – including the pigeon guano, horse manure and human waste for soil making and barter.

(C) Food Production – honey bees are here as is tofu and jam making spaces,

(D) Barter’s Market – Tribes share more than their neighbor’s food at the weekly Sunday market!

Their oasis or Tribal hub is sandwiched on the north and south sides of the property by rail tracks that go east or travel west to the coast.

INVITATION > COMMUNITY SHARE

Helios: “But I still don’t how light is emanating from that tower every night! There is no power source”

Rache: “Surely there are some things that even a big time permaculturist can’t explain!”

The Tribe has its share of irascible teenagers and these two are the driving contours of their click. Helios loves to care for the large animals and earns riding chits almost daily. The integration of the Tribe’s horses as transportation engines, and in the compost chemistry, are legend. Rache, more a people person with a sharp eye and smile for barter and quality in general. Many see these two on the Tribal Council some day.

As the SunDial Tribe retrofitted the rail way, many unforeseen communication and commerce opportunities were discovered and “rolled-out.” Library books now come and go back thru a loaner program from Eugene. Fish from the Pacific and inland streams go to market once or twice a month. Letters and packages go on rails.

During harvest rituals, the SunDial is lit with bee wax candles and turned in to a dance space. Meals are eaten on the four paths and songs are performed from the high room in the tower.

Interview with Shari by Willi

Can a community be a Hero?

Joseph Campbell called the third stage of the Hero's Journey the Return. The hero returns from the other worldly realm of the unconscious (I think it is fair to say that it is the soul to which we journey) with a boon to give to the community. Though symbolized as an object, the boon is the knowledge hero gains of one's authentic self and how to live in the world, upon return, as that true self. The hero is then charged with the responsibility to pass this on to the people in the community. For example, in Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, the hero Tayo, a psychologically wounded warrior returning to Laguna Pueblo after WWII, undertakes the Hero's Journey as a healing process not only for himself, but for the Pueblo and the world. Throughout the book, the elders of the Pueblo periodically ask him what he has to tell them. Tayo doesn't understand what they want until he completes his journey. It is only then that he goes to the elders to share with them what he has learned.

All the Hero's Journey myths in all the cultures of the world past and present with which I am familiar show the individual taking this journey in a process Jung called Individuation. A community doesn't go on this journey, which is why I think a community is not a hero nor can it be a hero. However, I think it can be heroic when it fosters and nurtures the individuals who live within it to become their true, authentic selves. The danger is that even with the best intentions it can stagnate and, like the Empire in Star Wars, become, as Campbell termed it, mechanical. In other words, it would become a community or state that stops fostering individuals to become authentic and starts requiring that they conform to ways of being that maintains the existence of the community as an entity. We see communities in this state in modern tellings of the Hero's Journey not just in Star Wars but also in Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and A Christmas Carol, to name a few.

Can you provide evidence that classic myths are energizing the permaculture, occupy or Transition movements in 2013?

Let me just say that archaic, classic, or modern myth, all fulfill some or all of the same purposes of myth: to explain natural phenomenon; to support what a society sees as right and wrong, good and evil; to help the individual to live as an authentic self within any society or community; and/or to help us understand the mysteries of the universe that are beyond our ability to understand rationally. So, from this perspective, I do think myth is energizing these movements. Though I am not familiar with the permaculture or Transition movements, I have been involved in the occupy movement. The fact that these movements have arisen is evidence that myth energizes them for the energy is spiritual and as it moves, these movements have arisen. When movements rise up against what people consider to be unjust, corrupt we do have the hero epic in play here. The three best modern myth examples I can think of are Star Wars, Matrix, and ‘V’.

In all three we see a corrupt government whose rulers are old, sterile, and so divorced from the people as to even be considered alien. In all three we see a group of people that rise up in opposition to that corruption. In Star Wars it’s the Rebellion that rises up against the Empire ruled by an emperor so old as to look like death itself. His enforcer, as it were, is a Jedi who has turned to the dark side and submitted to his lord to the point there is nothing left of him but a worm-life version of himself because he has become almost entirely mechanical. Within this struggle arise a young man and his sister who both become involved in the struggle against a mechanical society. The young man, undergoing his Hero’s Journey, has a final confrontation with both Darth Vader and the Emperor as his final tests to achieving his true, authentic self. In the Matrix, Neo becomes authentic within a rebellion of alien conquerors. V is hero, guide, and trickster in showing up a corrupt government and bringing about the awakening of a young woman in her heroine’s journey.

The occupy movement is a rising up of people rebelling against a government corrupted by corporate greed. Just as the Empire, aliens, and British government send their police force to rid themselves of these rebels, so we saw local police sent in to defend corporations against protestors. Any of these three movements, if the myths are any guide, are successful only insofar as individuals become their own heroes and in completing their journey in this process outsmart the powers they rise against.

Who or what are some of the current alternatives to Campbell’s constructs and visions? Is he still as important as ever?

Some of the current alternatives to Campbell with whom I am familiar are Freud, Jung, James Hillman, Maureen Murdock, Eckhart Tolle, and Dr. Clarissa Pinkola-Estes. Some of the what includes Maureen Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey, Jung’s comparative process of Individuation, Hillman’s exploration of the Psyche in the Underworld, his concept that the gods and goddesses have become our neuroses demanding our attention, the approach of Tolle and some Buddhists to eradicate the ego, Estes’ Jungian approach to fairy tales to help women recover their authentic selves in Women Who Run With Wolves and other of her books and retreats.

Unconditionally yes, Campbell is as important today as ever. There are roundtable groups around the world that meet regularly to discuss Campbell and what he was saying. They discuss myths, fairy tales, and movies in terms of what Campbell taught. There is a foundation that houses his work and his books. Pacifica Graduate Institute houses some of his writings. In the early days of this institute, he served on its board. People continue to ‘discover’ Campbell and his work and are moved by it. I myself discovered Campbell when I watched the entire 6 hours of Bill Moyers interview with him right before Joe died. The next day I went out and bought the companion book to those interviews as did, apparently, so many other people that the book store I went to had sold out of it and had to back order the title. I attribute that interview to eventually leading me to attend and get my degree from Pacifica. I know of at least two programs, one in this country and one in Australia that use the Hero’s Journey to teach boys how to become men. I am one of many teachers who use the Hero’s Journey to teach literature in their high school classrooms. I teach it directly in myth classes.

What is a mythologist? Are there common goals and trainings (or just individuals and multiple agendas?)

Most strictly speaking, a mythologist is anyone who studies mythology. In this country there are only two schools where one can receive training in mythology. One is the Pacifica Graduate Institute that offers an MA/PhD in Mythological Studies, and a school in New York that offers training in the application of mythology. Outside of these two schools, any other study in mythology is subsumed, if one is lucky, in studies in world religions and/or philosophy.

As far as common goals are concerned, this reminds me of all the times I've heard the question asking what mythology is. I've heard that question answered many ways, but in every case I have found that those answers fit in Campbell’s answer that there are four purposes of myth. I think the same is true for your question of common goals in the study of mythology; all the answers to the question can be contained in a few purposes. No matter how it’s worded, I think people study mythology for reasons deeper than merely coming to know the stories.

I think there is a desire to find meaning in one’s life and in life in general. I think there is a desire to understand on a symbolic/archetypal level the meanings in the myths. Of course there is the desire to study myth within an academic field of anthropology or archaeology, or even to study myth for its own sake. There is a desire to know and understand the peoples who told these myths to their children and to each other as well as sought out shamans, priestesses, and priests to enact the rituals that accompanied the myths. And I think there’s the desire to understand and heal one’s self.

Many champion the Hollywood Hero these days: Iron Man, Bat Man. There seems to be a lot of testosterone flowing there! Please read and react to my critique of Popmythology.com - a blog by written by Daniel Jun Kim:

By now, you probably have noticed that I reference both modern literature and movies, though not comic books because I'm not familiar with the last. However, When I was teaching Comparative World Mythology to high school students, when we came to the unit on the Hero's Journey, I used both classic myth and modern literature as well as movies to teach Campbell's steps of that journey. Students in turn became able to relate it to other movies and comics. Boys who had always loved the Star Wars trilogy often told me they would never be able to see it the same way again. So, I agree with what you are saying in you critique. Let me begin with Star Wars. The fact is that Campbell was a consultant on the film because Lucas wanted to be sure he got all the steps, all the symbols, all the archetypes, the myth absolutely correct. From there the list grows. The Matrix (first movie anyway), The Wizard of Oz, Willow, the Lord of the Rings (books and movies), A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, C.S. Lewis' series of the Witch, The Lion, and The Wardrobe, "V", The Pirates of the Caribbean (yes, and I can plot you all the steps of the HJ particularly in the first movie. And no, the hero is not Capt. Jack Sparrow. It's the young woman) and these are just the ones I remember off the top of my head.

In contrast, however, are the heroes you mention of the Iron Man and Batman stripe. I do not see them as the same kind of hero. They are not on a quest to find their authentic self, to move along the process of Individuation. They are the hero typical of a patriarchal culture that is not interested in the archetypal mythic Hero's Journey. They are the type of hero image that reminds us over and over again that heroism is only about might. That the evil always comes from the 'other' who is not us, and by that simple fact alone is evil. The hero image embodied in Batman, Superman, Iron Man, etc. continually puts before us the warrior hero of not only a patriarchal culture but one that worships a thunder father god who leads in battle, to whom he is prayed to be 'on our side which is righteous', to whom the choicest spoils of war will be dedicated, who insists that soldiers go out and protect our 'way of life' from threats on all sides that will destroy us if we aren't ever vigilant and ready for war.

In my opinion, this is the image of the Empire in Star Wars which uses suppression and oppression to maintain itself and is a distraction from that inner journey to authenticity. This kind of warrior hero doesn't have to be of high quality of deep development. This kind of hero only has to repeat the old orthodoxy of the empire which declares as heretic and rebel those who wish to be their authentic self. If we are attending to that heroic process of Individuation, we begin to think for ourselves and to think deeply. We are also, according to Campbell, supported in this by supernatural aides. This, of course, is seen as very dangerous to the order of things represented in various ways in the epics of the hero on his and her journey because when individuals thinking for themselves they are no longer controllable.

Please share a few of your favorite modern day Nature-based symbols.

In no particular order, I’d have to say first, the serpent. It is the earliest symbol representing the wisdom of the Goddess. It also is the symbol for regeneration. Next, I’d say the tree. It’s symbolic of the World Axis, or that which joins earth, above, and below. It is not only symbolic of family but also symbolic of the Self. Next, I’d say the moon. It symbolizes the phases of the life cycle of birth (crescent moon) life (waxing and full moon), death (waning moon), and rebirth (new moon). From archaic times we have figurines of the Goddess with the horn of an animal with 13 marks on it as a lunar year calendar. With her hand on her ample belly reminiscent of pregnancy/life, archaic peoples equated the phases of the moon with fertility and new life. For me these symbols still hold true in modern times.

How do you use alchemy?

I use alchemy symbolically. In dream work (dreams by the way as our personal myths) I look to the association of colors with the steps of the alchemical process of achieving the Philosopher's Stone as well as their association with the chakras. This can tell me where I am in a round of a journey or it will tell me if I have completed a round of my own Hero's Journey. I see the Philosopher’s Stone as the symbol of the Boon of the Journey. The Heiros Gamos in Alchemy shows up in the Hero's Journey and is really important as that union, the coming together of opposites, particularly into a transformation of being from one state to a higher one.

Magic is a word that means many different things to people. What is your definition of magic and how does it function in daily life?

Magic is a multi-layered and integrated mystery to me. Magic is dusk. Yes, there’s sleight of hand and distracting the audience, TV magic. Wonderment, Love, high art, swirl magic.

The magic that I want seems to pull me in and is best related to the alchemy I engineer with digits, values and video. If alchemy is transmutation, then why can’t magic be my hands?

Bill Moyers asked Joseph Campbell a question in the beginning of his 1988 interview The Power of Myth. Why myths? he asks. Why should we care about myths? The world that undulates out of 1988 to 2013 is a fiercely technological landscape with internet expanding an individual’s consciousness across continents and time, and cinema burgeoning new mythologies across the big screen. Do you see a fundamental shift in our relationships to myths in this moment? Does technology find its place among the myths of our time?

As instigator of NewMythologist.com and Myth Lab (and openmhythsource.com before them), I have been posting my symbols, pouring alchemy and launching interviews in support of a new mythological age for many years!

The clique: “The old myths have faded; we need new ones based on Nature, permaculture and Transition tools and values.”

Technology? If you mean video games, then I would say no way. Here teen-techno-capitalists are fostering ignorance and lethargy – hiding behind so-called individual freedoms, while sucking up stained profits with the same old blood and guts.

Movies are spinning cartoon after cartoon and I suppose there are Campbellian elements in some. I would rather watch HBO documentaries than Hollywood’s “Marvellized heros.”

Is technology not to be included in the “nature, permaculture and transition tools and values” that make up the new mythologies?

There are web-based tools and sites, content and value-drivers. I cannot rationalize war games as supporting nature, permaculture and transition tools and values. This content and values is steering us down the wrong path. I hasten to add here that the violence in many of the computer-based games is tearing down pagan and other forms of magik.

But, mustn’t we recognize video games and Hollywood’s “Marvellized heroes” as immediately influential as they permeate society?

No. They are a sexist virus from our corrupt, fear-drenched corporate closet.

Can we hope to manipulate these mythologies that spread like blood or an infection from the violence of virtual reality and turn them into a constructive power?

Good question. We all have choices. I trust that we will make the right selections in the media we buy for our kids.

Many of your workshops are formulated for children to experience new mythologies, connect with nature and reinvent their cultural tool set. What is one of the myths you share with them and how does it relate to their experience?

“Halo and Kat Wing of Caledonia Alley”, New Myth #38 is a recent piece that creates an artifact from a painting on a Mission District (SF, CA) garage. The image is graffiti-like, a common site for kids. Is this geo-magic? The myth works a new community ritual, perhaps more of a challenge in our time.

I am evolving and I want children to do so, too; please show me your visions and sing songs! I do not write new myths for myself but I hope to spark the next two generations of global children as they find common themes, struggles and solutions.

You design an outline for creating your own mythology out of a human-nature made artifact existing in a particular location, for example, a San Francisco art mural. Are the mythologies people create based on your process model supposed to be shared publicly? Or are these mythologies created, internalized, and out of the internalization produce an outward change in society?

The group creative process is shared as are the outcomes. It’s alchemic and a type of localization, too. I will be doing a public Myth Lab for the Transition Palo Alto Group in Palo Alto on June 9. Changes in people may include a new awareness of the public art and graffiti in our neighborhoods, local history and empowerment to write new songs, poems, and New Myths for our future.

Are there places in which one can share their myths?

Online; it would be nice to see the text and image from New Myth #38 painted on a café wall in SF!

Do you envision Planetshifter to become a tool database such as the Whole Earth Catalog of the 60′s?

That’s a stretch! Perhaps a value bank? I have little evidence that such a book would be financed by a publisher.

How do you see the concerns of the 60′s Eco-consciousness movements and the counter-culture practitioners who sought to create the culture they wanted to live in play across the field today?

I see too many meetings, picnics and short-term plans. I appreciated the in-your-face tactics of the Oakland Occupy group. Many in the permaculture and transition groups are only followers; scared and hoping for the best while the clock ticks down and we have less and less choices. We have the evidence of biological corruption, rampant pollution and control of energy and DNA by corporations. We need action. The folks in the 60’s gave us insights into a new earth-based consciousness; it’s our turn to make the global village safe and secure for all.

Do you consider the turn to nature, permaculture, myth and alchemy counter-culture?

No, this needs to be a brand new global paradigm shift. “Counter-culture” is weak – not good enough. We must focus on our children. One can take the best parts of Nature, permaculture, myth and alchemy and build a new human ecosystem.

Joey Kantor calls you “a story writer creating ‘new myths.’” How do you feel myth writing is like creative writing and is there a difference between writing a story and writing a myth?

A story to me is more simple in design and outcome – and not as global in reach as a new myth. I try to integrate specific things in my pieces including Nature, Transition, permaculture and alchemy. I have now a guide to build myths in the Myth Lab but always seek-out my protagonists, antagonists, conflicts and outcomes / lessons as any writer must do.

Campbell’s mythic trio is always here for me: Hero, Journey and Initiation. My 44 New Myths are posited in the future and can come with sci-fi flavors. Cascadia dances between reality and dream; where I feel most alive.

This is a quote from you: “For centuries symbols have been considered special instructions or codes and help build road maps to new adventure and visions for both alchemists and mythologists. As transmutational agents, symbols create attention, “knowledge-starts” and awareness at many levels of our being.” Can you elaborate on the relationship between self-created symbol and its transmutational ability in the world? For example, does my relationship to a symbol change because I’ve imbued it with a particular aspect, an image of the world covered in cloud for climate change, signalling my personal mythology around climate change, versus an image I grabbed off of the internet while searching for “climate change symbol.” How do our self-created myths differ from ubiquitous symbols online and in the media?

Symbols are like new eyes, hands and heart to me. I have created a rich body of work for children on the symbolic relevance and power in permaculture, climate change and Transition. Alchemic in creation and implementation, symbols generate deep meanings and consequences. Check out my Permaculture Ritualizer: A Kid’s Tool for Writing New Stories, symbols, Songs & Myths (Video).

I have no issue with creating New Myths; and equally no dissonance when creating new symbols to go in them. Same problem, same solution, eh?

“Understanding the Symbols of Climate Change” – A Transition Lesson by Willi Paul, NewMythologist.com

Myths were told as songs in the distant past, passed on through verse and music. Now, in Western culture at least, our mythologies are largely translated as books and movies. Can you talk about sound alchemy and sound symbols and why you think this is an important form for myths?

First, sound alchemy is a huge jump in consciousness for me on my journey. Technically, sound alchemy is fairly complex from vibe to mp3: FreeSound, Audacity to Windows Movie Maker to web. “Books and movies” carry the baggage of profit, ownership and obsolescence. To me, making sound alchemy is a sacred and personal experience, like the symbols I discussed above: they are cauldrons or holes to another path and experience. Sound alchemy produces sound symbols and magic.

Alas, I need to integrate my symbols and messages for children better!

Myth Lab is designed as an interactive, open source and iterative experience.
About Mr. Paul –

As a green certified business and sustainability consultant, Willi Paul launchedPlanetShifter.com Magazine on Earth Day 2009 to build a database of interviews and articles about innovation, sustainability, and the mystic arts. His bliss renewed in 2011 when he designed openmythsource.com to produce new mythic stories with modern alchemies.
Black Soil Tribe: Interview with 2013 Northwest Permaculture Convergence Presenter Eric McCool by Willi Paul, Planetshifter.com Magazine

“In the Cow Creek Valley of Southern Oregon, we are making preparations for the shifting paradigm, striving for independence from industrial systems. With resilience and self-reliance as our guiding principles, we are growing food and growing neighborly networks into tribe. The process of localization relates to the underlying ethic of permaculture: care of Earth, care of people. We’ve found that the best way to get to know each other is to work together, and we’ve combined the labor of localizing with potlucks, parties, and seasonal gatherings. Together we build fences, plant gardens, chop firewood, preserve food, make music, and go on adventures. In three years we’ve created a farming cooperative, a community garden, a seed bank, and a regional network that’s beginning to feel like tribe.”

Which permaculture principles best activate your vision and every day?

Use of small intensive systems, probably. My impulse when I first started cultivating land was to fill up as much space as possible with as many plants as I could. I found myself quickly overwhelmed, not only by the work involved, but also by the amount of knowledge from experience required to plant and harvest at the right time, not to mention keep things alive. So from that I’ve learned to expand in small increments, and only plant in small numbers when dealing with plants I’ve not grown before.

And that’s just with the gardens and food forest. Small and intensive systems also applies to our localization tribe, where we’re finding that building strong relationships with a handful of people is more important that making a big push to reach out to lots of people in the community at large all at once.

What do you mean by “building a Tribe?”

For most of our history, tribe was inherent to human culture. Since civilization took over, tribes have been replaced by other social constructions and humans have almost forgotten how to relate to each other in a natural way. Building tribe is about remembering our pre-civilization heritage and consciously creating a different kind of social atmosphere in which relationships are valued over material wealth, and in which we strive to harmonize with the natural world, not conquer and control it. We are building our tribe around the notion that we must trust each other and work together, sharing the difficulties and joys of life on the land as if we are all family. Because, really, we are!

Talk in more detail about what you mean by “shifting the paradigm?” Shifting from where to where; with whom?

Shifting from centralized coercion-based authority to localized consensus decision making. Shifting from phony fiat debt money issued by a cartel of usurers to barter, time banking, and currency backed by hard assets. Shifting from industrial import consumerism to local production and consumption; shifting from the notion that we are separate from nature to the idea of interconnectivity. Shifting from the use of aggression and force to the practice of peace, cooperation, and respect.

Most of the problems we face in this world, I believe, are the result of our cultural philosophy. Our assumptions about who we are, what our role on this planet is, and how we should best live, must be re-examined.

With whom? With any and all who are willing to let go of the entitlements of the current paradigm and work towards a healthier world, starting with themselves.

What role do new songs & myths play in your community building?

In our tribe, we haven’t strongly developed the practice of crafting and telling stories to help reinforce our vision, though we do make lots of music, and we have a few songwriters who promote the images of our intentions. I think myth and song are of utmost importance when it comes to reshaping culture, so that’s clearly something for us to put more energy into.

What is localization? Can you share some of the ups and downs from Cow Creek Valley of Southern Oregon?

Localization means reducing our dependence on outside producers, with the goal being community self-reliance. On the upside, numerous people in our valley see the importance of localizing, and we have quite a few producers of various goods. Lately we have begun to organize and coordinate our efforts, and we are developing a local product line along with a buy local campaign to promote to the general population.

The downside is that you can’t really make much money selling produce or hand crafted goods in a small town, and it’s still cheaper to buy industrially produced goods from abroad than it is to produce them for yourself. For most people in our area, local production is a hobby. Most are too busy trying to eek out a living to put serious time into developing resilient local systems.

Another downside is that we have accustomed ourselves to a way of life that simply would not be possible without global industrial production, and most people “need” far more than could ever be produced locally. So another aspect of localizing (and a difficult one) involves weaning off of things that are not essential to survival, even if they have become standard entitlements of our current way of life.

Are there forces acting against the Permaculture movement?

I just mentioned a big one: entitlements. Another is ignorance. I believe permaculture would all the rage if people understood how dire our situation is, ecologically and culturally. The more people accept that our current system cannot work and that we have no choice but to reevaluate our strategy, the more the principles of permaculture will be applied in the mainstream world, whether it gets called permaculture or not.

Even calling what we are doing permaculture can be an obstacle to the goals of the movement. I’ll be talking about this on the Friday night panel. I’ve met many people who are offended by the notion that a bunch of intellectuals with some fancy system are going to tell them how they could be doing things better by learning permaculture. I don’t mean to say that this is what permaculture is about, but in my experiences, this is often how it is perceived by old time farmers and rural working class folks. Hence the development of what I call undercover permaculture, in which we attempt to spread the good ideas inherent to permaculture subtly, introducing concepts and strategies in ways that are digestible for people who still operate within conventional culture.

Who are some of the presenters that you will seek-out at the Convergence this year? Why?

Paul Cienfuegos is one. I sat in his Sunday discussion at the convergence in 2011, and I was very inspired by some of the things he said. The phrase municipal civil disobedience stuck with me, and I’m glad to see that he will be talking about community rights, which I think are of utmost importance in the struggle to restore our society starting at the local level.

I’m also very interested in talking with Carol Deppe, because it’s challenging to envision the scale of food production necessary to sustain a whole community without the use of heavy machinery, which I don’t count on having available to us forever. Figuring out ways to produce food and basic goods with less machinery and less reliance on fossil fuels and grid power is a big step in reclaiming our culture and restoring the health of the planet.

Don Tipping has long been an inspiration to me, and Charlotte Anthony has been one of my primary permaculture teachers over the last few years, so I’ll also be looking for both of them.

Eric’s Bio

I was born in Texas. I went to Baylor University, Boston University, and University of Texas San Antonio, studying philosophy. I took a year off between the latter two to travel. I didn't graduate. I spent the next four years traveling, vagabonding, and backpacking, and seeking a spiritual path. I worked all manner of low paying jobs, only for long enough to get some money to hit the road again. Eventually I began to feel a strong calling to do something more for the planet and for the future, but it took me a while to figure out how to do that. Through the writings of William Kotke, I learned about permaculture and moved up to Oregon to join an ecovillage project, which ultimately dissolved, but which got me in connection with the people I'm now working within the Glendale area, localizing and building tribe. Eric took his PDC course in 2010 under Tom Ward.

Access > Plan > Stewardship

The Roundabout Food Forest Gang (RFF) had a vision of returning a four block street and roundabout to a place to walk, connect, plant and harvest, including a pathway for walkers and bikes in a post-petroleum rebirth. RFF is calling for a permaculture-driven map free from City tentacles, long broken by bankruptcy and a 1950’s vision. Their roundabout cluster went off-grid when the utilities were unearthed and sent packing. Green technologies are in place now: water cachement, grey water, solar hub, and other shared earth-friendlies. The food forest was planted by the 16 original neighbors.

A bright green local seed for a change.

Today the “roundabout dirt share” includes large swathes of vegetables – currently producing tomatoes, zucchini, squash, kale, cabbage, celery, asparagus, and broccoli – as well as maturing fruit trees such as apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, avocado, cherry, orange, tangerine, fig, and pomegranate.

Residential lots in each of the four directions emanating from the circle are spirit transformed; integrated. The Gang broke-up the concrete curbs and removed the asphalt streets. They removed the boulevards but kept the sidewalks. At the center circle stands an ancient dwarf Gala Apple Tree.

Hummingbirds pollinate the food forest and the flowering veggies, sing, dance, play, have their babies and entertain the circle scene; they are watch dogs, messengers and teachers for the neighborhood. The residents put up hummingbird condos to facilitate the hummer’s pollinatic and dare devil ways.

Human elements now include benches, gravel paths, plants, a compost area, and a tool shed.

A permaculture food forest mimics some of the beneficial relationships of a natural forest. They are quick to point out that food forests are not ‘natural’, but are designed and managed ecosystems that are very rich in biodiversity and productivity. The food forest meets several goals:

a. To produce food

b. To produce forage for beneficial insects, pollinators, chickens and song birds

c. To create wildlife habitat to nurture for our bodies through herbal teas and concoctions

d. To create beauty and sense of well being

Four totem poles – one at each corner from the roundabout – are reserved as four activity spaces:

a. Yoga / stretching

b. Reading / quite conversations

c. Water fountain

d. Two picnic tables

Values > Invitation

At each totem, the working principles for the project are posted on a small plaque:

Work Collaboratively

Use Local Resources First

Re-Use & Recycle

Hands-on, Peer-to Peer Learning

Gifting

Horizontal Decision Making

Celebration > Hope > New Myths

At the “roundabout opening” celebration, children tie recycled purple cloth ribbons around the trunk and main limbs of the old Apple tree to show of unity with Nature and their new community intersection. Each ribbon represents a wish to put some energy back into their neighborhood, food forest and friends.

No one noticed a small person wearing a dark grey hoodie smiling at the crowd tonight, leaving the celebration early with an apple in his pocket.

He is the wise-old “Green Guardian” who lives in the hollowed-out roots of the Gala Apple Tree and keeps an eye out for kids, litter bugs and the birds.

Have you seen him?

Permaculture Kids: Building Myths for the Future

by Jessica Cox, openmythsource.com

“Just before his death Joseph Campbell was interviewed by Bill Moyers and that interview was later turned into the documentary, “The Power Of Myth.” In this interview he postulated the idea that humanity was in need of new mythologies. Ones that were not rooted in the ancient world as all our current ones are. But myth’s that would help us navigate this new and strange world we are creating.”

When I was eight years old I would meander through our suburban backyard, my long brown hair in two braids, my feet bare against the prickly grass. Oblivious to the freeway roar on the other side of the sound wall I wove through ankle-high flowers, my steps flat-footed, like a hunter approaching her prey. But it wasn’t food I was after. I wanted simply to become a Native American by pretending to be one. It was a potent game of make-believe. Imagination plays a crucial role in the development of morals, as do the stories our children are brought up with.

Children have an acute sensitivity to nature, a world-view that is created around their play-yard, their pets, the wild animals in the neighborhood. A mischievous frog or disgruntled badger are often subjects of children’s books, where the animal kingdom comes alive in a shared language, shared character flaws, shared journeys. As we grow older, the magic and mystery of nature tends to fade as our paths intersect with school, work, our first car, moving away from home. For some, the call to nature remains. For others, it is consumed by material desires, reserved as a place to visit but not to live in.

There is a pervasive sense in today’s culture that nature-consciousness requires a look backwards. It hearkens to Native American folklore and culture, a time when working the land by hand was necessary because machines hadn’t been invented yet, and companies hadn’t taken over food production. Because (in a very global sense) we have moved out of tribes, out of shared geographic communities, a tribal communal living has been archived as a thing of the past. The myths that shaped Native American cultures are like the Greek and Roman myths, sensed peripherally but subsumed into other stories, the stories of mass cinema. Disney. Standing in the sun with my hand on a tree trunk, whispering sweet nothings to the bark – my conception of what the “Indians” were like had largely been formed by watching Peter Pan, Pocahontas and some cartoon version of Sacajawea.

Though at the basis myths are “just stories,” they hold awesome power. Their stories, characters, and values permeate the minds of a social collectivity. Like culture itself, myths are created, revised, and re-created in response to society’s political, economic, social, or environmental needs. Its symbols, as Joseph Campbell notes, “ touch and release the deepest centers of motivation.” Yet we have lost touch with many of the genuinely mythic symbols as the proliferation of consumerism and media images have manipulated ancient meanings. Like Disney’s overpowering influence over ancient stories and histories, myth no longer plays in the same ball park. Campbell notices the folly of trying to “preach to children who will be riding rockets to the moon a morality and cosmology based on concepts of the Good Society and of man’s place in nature that were coined before harnessing the horse!” So where can our revisions and creations of myths come from in a world culture so varied and so shaped by external powers? Where do we begin?

Permaculture address the issues of dispersed globalized living, failing economic structures, and a struggling planet. It integrates the modernized world with old-world values of land and nature stewardship, community, and new visions of finance methods and economics, technology and tools, spiritual health and well being, and culture and education. Its aim is to establish a methods for establishing and maintaining efforts that will thwart eco-destruction and build stronger communities, all working towards a sustainable future. To accomplish this, permaculture offers ethics, or principles. Building upon permaculture’s tenets, it is possible to create new myths for the modern world.

Although idea that one can create one’s own mythology is antithetical to the definition of mythology, in today’s world of revised world stories, a counter to the destruction of myth is to reinvent mythology’s definition. Carl Jung created a personal mythology to describe underlying elements in his own psyche. We create our own myths daily by interpreting and unpacking symbols, collecting a store-house of meanings that are unique to our selves. Myths generate models for reality, so why not work to create the reality you want to live in?

What are the myths for our children who will inherit our world, who live in the land of tomorrow, and for whom life has a promise of change? In trying to talk to trees, I inherently believed that I could change the facts of the world if I wanted it badly enough. The imaginative power of childhood can be the location of global shifts in consciousness. Encouraging children to develop their own stories and uncover their own mythologies can develop an almost magical transformation from imagination to reality. In building hero’s quests, children can embark upon new adventures in a world they are familiar with, and work to save it.

Permaculture Principle 1: Observe and Interact

Go into the backyard, or park, or any patch of grass with some plants and observe it. How many different plants can you spot? Are there bugs or animals? How do you want to interact? Even simply observing is an interaction. You can later draw a picture of something you saw, write a story about the scene, or come up with your own way of interacting.

Permaculture Principle 12: Creatively Use and Respond to Change

Symbols are potent tools for remembering and for the imagination. Permaculture uses the butterfly as a symbol for the 12th principle, and accompanies the image with a proverb: “Vision is not seeing things as they are, but as they will be.” What does this mean to you? How is this related to a butterfly’s transformation from a caterpillar. Are there ways that transformations affect your life? What have you done about them? What could you do about a future transformation?
