One critical mandate for the Transition Movement in the present Chaos Era is to createnew myths and associated rituals that guide us. What rituals do you participate in now; as a child? Do your stories speak to a world in turmoil? Who controls the narrative? This is a call for new rituals: a universal sharing and return to family, city core, gardens, fields, water, soul and Nature.

Ritual (2)

(a) A ritual “is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and designed to influence preternatural entities or forces on behalf of the actors’ goals and interests.” Rituals may be prescribed by the traditions of a community, including a religious community.

(b) Semi-regular gathering of family or community members that share a Nature-based experience, value or dream often associated with formal roles and traditions. (W. Paul)

Universal

(c) A globally understood sign (i.e. – meaning) that mandates care for all cultures. (W. Paul)

New Sharing & Return Rituals

The Return of Ivory to Native Lands

In Chiang Mai, Thailand, elephants are healed and cared for on farms for visitors and locals alike. The big mammals are protected from poachers and considered sacred. Are they our equals? Can we see that Asian elephants and all earthly beings are part of a global family? That the return of stolen tusks from world-wide black markets is an act of healing, honor and learning with Nature. Tusk revenue returned to the farms support preservation and education. This program of “international return” to local care is a ritual of love, sharing and support.

Soil Building

With neighbors we clear grass heavy lands with controlled fires and shovels as a safety precaution and for soil building, turning-over the burnt wood and ash, adding compost from the neighborhood bins and then re-planting. With permaculture, we share knowledge and resources to keep fire on our side and to obtain healthy soils and sustainable yields.

Harvest Dance

Together we celebrate both Nature and Permaculture calendars, our union of science and spirit at last. Picking each crop as it matures, teaching the youth to dance, to sort, peel, prepare and cook for their sharing dance, a seasonal celebration.

Taking Down the Fences

Localization in the back yard! From a pragmatic point of view, taking down your fences can mean better friendships with your neighborhoods, a heightened sharing opportunity! Property lines are gone, yielding larger gardens and shared yields! Here is a return to our extended family of humans and animals, increasing views and openings to a local horizon; building resilience, trust and sharing between often fearful and isolated strangers.

The Convergence

The New College is born! The Convergence is a spirit recharger, a fun zone, full of agriculture lessons, dancing allowed! The Convergence brain thrust propels our union, sharing tech and spirit alike; accelerating our paradigm shift to a new land.

Sharing Expo

Bring what you have, take what you need. Ask a question, make a friend! Extend the Good Will model? The Sharing Expo is a true “Win-Win”, building and sharing the new network all at once; dissolving capitalism with new rituals.

by Willi Paul, Planetshifter.com Media

A sun shower is a meteorological phenomenon in which rain falls while the sun is shining. These conditions often lead to the appearance of a rainbow, if the sun is at a low enough angle. The phenomenon has a wide range of sometimes remarkably similar folkloric names in cultures around the world. A common theme is that of clever animals and tricksters getting married or related to the devil, although many variations of parts of this theme exist.

A rainbow is a phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multi-colored arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.

Fracking pollutes by placing stress on surface water and ground water supplies from the withdrawal of large volumes of water used in drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Each time a well is fractured ("fracked") it requires massive amounts of water. It is estimated that the average well will use 5.6 million gallons per frack. If you figure an average family of 4 in Ohio uses about 300 gallons of water per day, the water used in one fracture would supply one household with water for 51 years.

Drought is an extended time when a region receives a deficiency in its water supply, whether atmospheric, surface or ground water. A drought can last for months or years. Generally, this occurs when a region receives consistently below average precipitation. It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region. Although droughts can persist for several years, even a short, intense drought can cause significant damage and harm to the local economy.

Adhesion tension is how water molecules get together and march up and down the roots and leaves of the plants.

Beaver dams are dams built by beavers to provide ponds as protection against predators such as coyotes, wolves, and bears, and to provide easy access to food during winter. These structures modify the natural environment in such a way that the overall ecosystem builds upon the change, making beavers a keystone species.

An iceberg is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating freely in open water. It may subsequently become frozen into pack ice (one form of sea ice). As it drifts into shallower waters, it may come into contact with the seabed, a process referred to as seabed gouging by ice.

In meteorology, a cyclone is an area of closed, circular fluid motion rotating in the same direction as the Earth. This is usually characterized by inward spiraling winds that rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth.

A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex (usually appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud) that occurs over a body of water. In the common form, it is a non-supercell tornado over water. Most waterspouts do not suck up water; they are small and weak rotating columns of air over water.

Nestle Water Bottling Proposal - Nestlé has proposed to bottle over 100 million gallons of water per year from Oxbow Springs, a publicly-owned water source in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The accompanying bottling plant would be built in the city of Cascade Locks and would strain existing water and transportation infrastructure, requiring millions of dollars of upgrades. Despite this, and the 200 semi-truck trips through town every day, city officials support the proposal based on Nestlé's promise of up to 50 new jobs. Bark is a lead member of the Keep Nestlé Out of the Gorge Coalition, which represents many tens of thousands of concerned citizens who do not want Nestlé to take their water. Bark has facilitated over 94,000 people in telling state officials that the Oxbow Springs giveaway is not in the “public interest,” a standard by which the application is measured.

A fish ladder, also known as a fish way, fish pass or fish steps, is a structure on or around artificial and natural barriers (such as dams, locks and waterfalls) to facilitate diadromous fishes' natural migration (i.e. - can both live in fresh water and in the ocean). Most fish ways enable fish to pass around the barriers by swimming and leaping up a series of relatively low steps (hence the term ladder) into the waters on the other side. The velocity of water falling over the steps has to be great enough to attract the fish to the ladder, but it cannot be so great that it washes fish back downstream or exhausts them to the point of inability to continue their journey upriver.

A composting toilet is a type of dry toilet that uses a predominantly aerobic processing system to treat human excreta, by composting or managed aerobic decomposition. These toilets generally use little to no water and may be used as an alternative to flush toilets. The human excreta is usually mixed with sawdust, coconut coir or peat moss to facilitate aerobic processing, liquid absorption, and odor mitigation. Most composting toilets use slow, cold composting conditions, sometimes connected to a secondary external composting step.

A water cannon is a device that shoots a high-velocity stream of water. Typically, a water cannon can deliver a large volume of water, often over dozens of meters. They are used in firefighting, large vehicle washing and riot control.

Bottled water is drinking water (e.g., well water, distilled water, mineral water, or spring water) packaged in plastic or glass water bottles. Bottled water may be carbonated or not. Sizes range from small single serving bottles to large carboys for water coolers. Homeless people often gather discarded empty water and pop bottles for a small cash reward.

An irrigation canal is a waterway, often man-made or enhanced, built for the purpose of carrying water from a source such as a lake, river, or stream, to soil used for farming or landscaping. An essential element of farming found in archaeological digs dating as far back as 4,000 BC, irrigation canals have often meant the difference between sustenance and starvation.

Greywater (also spelled graywater) or sullage is defined as all wastewater streams generated from households or office buildings except for the wastewater from toilets. Sources of greywater include for example sinks, showers, baths, clothes washing machines or dish washers. As greywater contains many fewer pathogens than domestic wastewater, it is easier to treat and to recycle onsite for uses such as toilet flushing, landscape irrigation or even irrigation of crops.

A spritzer is a tall, chilled drink, usually made with white wine and seltzer, club soda or sparkling mineral water.

A water balloon or water bomb is a latex rubber balloon filled with water. They are commonly used in water balloon fights and as a practical joke device.

EXCERPT -

How does TS deal with natural disaster planning?

Currently Transition Streets helps build social cohesion almost as a by-product. We will be adding an optional emergency preparedness module to it - so look for that in the not-too-distant-future.

Do permaculture tools and ethics play role in your program? Any examples to share?

Yes they do. The Transition Towns Movement (now in over 50 countries!) was founded on Permaculture design principles and these are present in all aspects of this work. Instead of looking at a landscape as Permaculture generally does, the Transition Movement looks at human settlement and observes its assets and flows. From that perspective it is easier to see the design or re-design possibilities.

"Stacking functions" is a Permaculture principle and is evident in the Transition Streets transportation chapter in this one example, which encourages participants to think ahead before making single errands to consider what else might be accomplished in one outing. Also the social cohesion mentioned is a result of participating in Transition Streets and could be seen as "stacking functions".

We are a consumer society (and planet!). What are the underlying values of “credit, spend, and throw-away?”

Credit, spend and throw-away don't really fit in a transitioned world where we live within the means of the earth's resources, where resources are truly cherished. We can see that more and more clearly in California, just how precious water is!

WP: What is your experience with fracking? Have you repaired toxic aquifers?

GL: We have helped protest fracking. If we installed enough water harvesting aquifer re-charge earthworks at the surface we can add continuous downward pressure on the aquifers.

WP: Cool. Please give us a URL to a fracking protest that you participated in.

GL: You look it up on permaculturenews.org

WP: One of my interests is new community rituals that re-connect community with the sacred. Two such rituals are sharing expos and fall harvests. How do you see old and new rituals?

GL: We work with traditional tribal people on permaculture aid work projects where processes and protocol give people the ability to manage the inevitable dramas of life in a unified and predictable way.

WP: OK. So, in general, you believe that traditional tribal people do not practice rituals?

GL: I said what I said - please read it.

WP: After the “swales and cob benches” are done, driven by low-tech design principles, permaculture comes down to love to me. How do you express love for the land and your clients?

GL: Appreciation of natural abundance in beautiful form.

WP: Is there any news on permaculture-driven alternative medicines that you know of?

GL: Yes we have a large plant data base on alternative medicines through our long-term working partnership with the late Isabel Shipard.

WP: Since my PDC, I find myself integrating other ideas and values with permaculture, like mythology and alchemy. Do you incorporate other things into your practice that are outside of permaculture? If so, why?

GL: We stick to proven science and not included meta-physics.

WP: That seems to be the standard permaculture line. But do you see a place for a personal spiritual connection to land design?

GL: Only if you keep it personal and do not teach it.

WP: Can permaculturists run and win local governmental offices? What is your political commitment(s) to date?

GL: No and none.

WP: That is a short answer, Mr. Lawton! Why can’t permies run and win local governmental offices?

GL: I have no political commitments. Sorry I am very busy with many things and may have read your question too quickly. So yes they can but I believe it is a waste of time to enter into a corrupt system and expect to be able to change it from within.

WP: Permaculture doesn’t advocate storing food and weapons in a bomb shelter! But what are the main differences between permaculture and survivalists? Have you taught students from the survivalist camp?

GL: Yes we consult and design for survivalists.

WP: Please name a specific project and explain how your consultations differ?

GL: Jack Spirko is my biggest connection in recent years, I have (worked with the) Y2K crowd …, they are really just precise designs with survival oriented design elements.

WP: Can you share any permaculture inspired games, songs, and myths?

GL: We do haste great participation parties at the end of PDC's.

WP: California is in a long-term drought. How would your firm go about producing a sustainable solution?

GL: Good permaculture design solutions.

WP: Please offer up one specific solution to the CA drought and give us details.

Algae conjured up the Myth Stimulator apparatus while back country camping in Yosemite. The dome’s latex, interactive doom structure hold up the tent has been transmuted for high tech, mythic voyages. In a recent dream his ceiling came alive with images and sounds and he could touch and change the content at will.

The internal ceiling surface of the chamber is constructed of a soft, pliable fabric that implants mikes, cams or other source data that is held up by external frame like a dome tent; contiguous or seamless ceiling “cage” wrapped in an egg shape like an enlarged jet cockpit; opaque when not in use.

Chimera and Blazer have been dreaming in sleeping bags, wombed at H-P Innovation Lab 3, compiling code 24/7 and living off of brown bananas and kale smoothies. The three sponsors each have a stake in the new JourneyMaker software that aims to somehow integrate past, present and future through a new mythology lens.

Many in the Valley see this project as the most important incubator tech in recent time. Team Prometheus EV cares less about technology patients than initiating Gaia 2.

"Last month we took up to much too message, an undoable scale."

"Ya right. The “Food Forests on Mars” campaign!"

Sponsored by North Bay City Lands Conversion Group was underwritten by Permaculture Principle #6.

"Not sure that "Make the least change for the greatest effect" was the result?"

"Maybe sometimes we should just make the case instead of propagating silly slogans?!"

"Down."

* * * * * * *

Two months ago, the crew did the “seed library on wheels” campaign. The truck was robbed twice.

Permaculture Propaganda Lab's ( PPL) strategy for their case strapped clients is often simple: pick one principle or ethic from permaculture and design a campaign for the client.

Weaving Nature lore, sustainability and human subjects in the NorCal biosphere, PPL works a new campaign per month for food, concert tickets or fresh fish - to name of few things bartered.

The seed bomb factory on the first floor was closed down by the feeds late last year after an all-night Psilocybin-drenched rave and an early morning product demonstration got out of hand.

In 2019, multiple NorCal tipping points are fracking the permie scene as the rich consolidate power, make higher fences and force the poor to fight for their injustice.

* * * * * * *

The Perma Store has brought their visions, wares and woes to PPL for an outreach transfusion after buying up the Dollar Store franchise in 2017 and seeing sales of permaculture tools go down by 24%.

"Let's lease the 14 NorCal bill boards from Zippy’s Sign Mafia and go with:"

"Grow It - Eat It - Compost it @ The Perma Store."

"Thankfully some sign locations are in urban settings. Few can afford the train or auto travel charges at this point.

"Sounds like Principle #7 fits ok here: "Start with the smallest systems and build on your successes, with variations."

"What comes after the billboard?"

“Understanding Redundancy” – A Brief Lesson for Children by Willi Paul, Planetshifter.com Magazine

It is important to connect the concepts of resilience and redundancy to grow and share our growing Transition. For this lesson, understand resilience as the ability of a community to become healthy and successful after something bad happens.

From Permaculture (Primary Principles for Functional Design – #5), redundancy design requires that each part of the any critical social, food or energy system is supported by multiple back-ups. Redundancy protects us when one or more traditional processes or components fail.

Redundancy is also about the recovery phase after an emergency as we work together to return our lives to a safe operational place.

*******

Here are some examples of redundancy:

- Back-up life support equipment and staffing plans at relief clinics

- Building your house on stilts for protection against high water and predators

- Squirrels saving nuts in multiple locations

- A Seed Library – preserving different genetic strains to guard against altered / toxic invader seeds

- Community Food Forest – multiple crops that all supply vitamin, protein or other nutritional needs

- Solar batteries that support home heating and cooling when traditional power sources fail

- Teaching multiple tribe members how to lead and teach important skills, including local land design methods, participatory governance and other Post-Chaos Era community needs

*******

Note: This lesson is itself is an example of redundancy as the Internet multiplies the available number of sites that kids that can read this work and implement its wisdom.

"Sedona Spells: Kid's Nature Cartoon."
Interview with Nathaniel by Willi -

Where do you experience the most “deep reverence” in your daily life?

Every morning I meditate, quiet and still, in a hidden parcel of woods, on the edge of town. Here I am approached by many curious animals. I feel the reflection of their movements reverberating through my own blood and in a few precious moments I am able to really feel, on the experiential level, the universal interconnection of life. This is something I feel most deeply when I am able to share it with children.

Is magic spiritual? Is mystery magic?

There is nothing that is unrelated to mystery, magic, or spirit. Of course the each of them are deeply subjective terms. To me the sun rising in the morning is a cosmic expression of divine spirituality, as is the fact that we can draw ancient sunlight out of the earth and use it to power our machines of destruction. Every action we perform is a manipulation of the energy and elements of creation. Every impulse that arises within us is a call to perform an act of magic. Sometimes that impulse is used to satisfy a selfish desire, sometimes it draws us closer to a path of service toward others. A kind thought, a small sacrifice for the benefit of someone in need, anything that tends toward balance and harmony, within ourselves and amongst all living beings, these appear to be expressions of our higher self, which many of us perceive as spirit. Forces of chaos and destruction are equally magical and mysterious to me. Darkness and light are both beautiful and necessary forces in our experience as human beings. Whatever terms we use to describe these forces in our lives, we are working with them at all times. The more important question for me is: “How can we do so to best serve the highest good?”

You write: “Early childhood is naturally a time of great wonder and enchantment.” How do you support and deliver wonder and enchantment at Nature’s Mystery Awareness School? What forces can work against this?

There are many ways to support wonder and enchantment in the life of a child. It is our primary task as instructors of Nature’s Mystery Awareness School to model goodness, love, and reverence for all life. If we ourselves are enchanted by the world around us, we excite curiosity in the heart of the children under our care. We choose to focus beyond the purely material elements of life and place a great deal of importance on the development of the imagination. Einstein once said that “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” He is, of course, not the first to have figured that out. Children are reminding us of this fact on an ongoing basis. Most of us are just too busy, most of the time, to give the matter adequate attention. Otherwise we would be much more careful about the type of environment we allow to fuel our children’s imagination.

Busyness, or distraction, is perhaps the greatest threat to our work as environmental educators, as well as to the health and vitality of the human being. If we were able to create the time and space to deeply consider the impact of each of our daily actions, we would certainly not be committing the absolutely insane level of ecological destruction that we are currently engaged in and finding the other essential source of support for our children’s development, exposure to the beauty of a naturally complex ecosystem, would not be so great a challenge. Nature’s Mystery is very fortunate to have many supportive friends and neighbors in our community who support our work and allow us access to their land. We have the ability to explore small parcels of wetlands and watersheds, meadows and woodland, in town as well as farms, old-growth forests, botanical sanctuaries, and permaculture communities in the surrounding area.

Can you tell us more about how mystery works: In Nature? In daydreams? In play?

A few days before I launched my pilot program: “Blue Heron” (named after a nature program I had the great privilege to experience in my younger days); I had one child enrolled. I needed five students just to cover the cost of the insurance and the company wanted their check that day in order to have the policy in place in time. On my way to check my email on the morning I was thinking perhaps the time wasn’t right when a Great Blue Heron swooped down out of the sky just over my head. A few moments later, I received a phone call from a parent wanting to register two more children. I ended up with ten kids by day one. Some people call such synchronicities coincidence, but they happen in my life far too often to dismiss. We’ll be playing a game of Cougar Stalks Deer with the kids, where I take on the role of the deer and they try to sneak up on me a kid will see an animal sign they think might be a cougar, we’ll stop to look and a deer will come bounding out of the forest. Someone will be telling a story about a raptor and we will look up to see a bald eagle flying over head. The more you stop to give it your attention, the more you will see these kind of things are happening all the time.

How do your instructors and programs ‘foster a infinitely deeper attunement of our natural senses to the world around us?’

Through a wide variety of daily practice. We use a number of games and activities that stimulate and activate different senses in different ways. There are for anyone interested in developing their own awareness skills I highly recommend the Kamana Naturalist training, put out by Jon Young. I also owe a great deal to the work of Tom Brown, Rudolf Steiner and many of my own mentors and teachers. If you happen to be in the Eugene area, you can contact me for personal nature mentorship opportunities for any age.
We need to create new consciousness with the images and messages that we make.

Today’s children are super smart and have a great hunger for new stories and myths - to create and share them with other kids globally. So I am an advocate for creating new tools for kids: sound bites or sound tracks, essays, stories. I have published 34 new myths using this sound, text, imagery, vision , alchemy and new myth frame work.

Images! Children are bombarded 24 hours a day. They need a need perspective or process to break the consumption drone. Something more personal and magical like the new alchemy which is a “change experience.” This model helps to redefine and illuminate new alchemies and proposes integrations in through several creative steps.

The act of working with this model (solo or in collaboration) is an alchemic act. Integrated output plus vision is the heart of the tool. The final format (pdf, avi, etc.) of the resulting artistic piece is of less significance.

The Base Model:

The New Animation Model alchemy is driven by two stages and the alchemic synergy between:

1. Text, images and sounds and

2. Vision(s)

Defining the Terms:

Sound

To me, sounds are the least understood but hold the highest alchemic potential for children's creativity. As imagine connectors, sounds are the connection to past worlds and a future sonic glue. Children can create soundtracks and musical lattices for their own visions. Soon gone are the corporate jingles and processed top 40 hit making from the"old days?" ;-)

Text

Perhaps the best understood, most rigid and traditional element for new animations, text are the quickest to deploy use in creative projects. As text / sub-text, credits, titles, etc., children can understand the meanings, placement and legal function of labels and captions with little training. But letters, words and phrases are also doors to deeper meanings (i.e. - poetry) and alchemic in combination with the other elements.

Images

Images are the third major component for alchemic recombination in this model. Like text, images are also a rigid and machine controlled / traditional element for new animations. Images without sound can invite us to add our own inner voice or upload a soundtrack or over-power us with an historic or family references.

Alchemy

It is often interesting to watch a child playing a video game or listening to a tune. Where is the alchemic change in each? It could be argued that the more text, sound and image elements that kid has to brings to the experience the better? The model speaks to an active creative process - not a reactive one. Commercial television with it's 1950's routines and soap operatic, brain numbing control is one counter-example to the goals of the animation model.

Vision

A child's vision can be fueled by many things: heroes, memories, material wants, a global view or fear. This animation process can be key to both the start. middle or return stages of a journey to test the world and return home to tell the tale. Vision is best summed up as hope and a willingness to fight for your dreams. Joseph Campbell's work is key here.

There is no more controversial piece of the model than the proposed resultant or the New Myths. And this comes with a multiple premises: including that the classic myths can longer stir our creativity and initiate our children's journey. And two: there is a sacred symbol or ritual that binds all people together.

Text

The ongoing momentum of state and federal marine conservation agencies geared toward preserving the Pescadero lagoon and preventing fish kills was determined to have paid off in early December.

Eighteen years ago, experts began to recognize a significant impediment at the lagoon winding under Highway 1 that resulted in the death of hundreds of steelhead trout. The population of steelhead trout has diminished from 600,000 in the 1980s to a scant 200,000, said Chuck Bonham, director of the California Department of Fish and Game. During yearly months of disconnect, the temperature of the lagoon rises and decreases oxygen levels in the water, affecting the procreation and resiliency of the native fish. As the fresh water rises above a layer of salt water, the water column begins to stratify and creates unsafe conditions for endangered and threatened coastal marine life.

Representatives from California State Parks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, California Fish and Game and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are among the participating organizations. After receiving permits from the various government agencies, Patrick Rutten, a representative of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Restoration Center, put his plan to restore the lagoon into action Oct. 4.

Based on an appropriate tide schedule, the daytime breach occurred when the sunlight was at its highest and allowed photosynthesis to help raise the oxygen level in the water, Rutten said.

“For the first time since 2000, no fish kills occurred in the Pescadero lagoon following the breach of the sandbar,” said Jim Milbury, spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries.

Approximately 40 volunteers convened at the lagoon to begin the day-long process of manually breaching the 75-foot gap between the lagoon and the ocean. Using shovels, the volunteers were able to forge a channel allowing the warm fresh water and the cooler ocean water to mix. As expected, this effort was short-lived and the channel closed within a few days with nominal effect. After continuing to monitor the post-breach decreasing water quality in the lagoon, it was determined a second breach would be necessary, Rutten said.

Supported by the fraternal service organization the Native Sons of the Golden West, an excavator was rented to conduct a more substantial breach a few weeks later, Rutten said.

“It hurts our feelings when people say it’s only 200 or 500 steelhead dying [each year]; any fish kill is too much,” said Tim Frahm, Native Son of the Golden West member.

After six hours of excavating an extensive aqueduct, the lagoon breached significantly.

“We lowered the volume of the lagoon by a full ‘foot’ and created a channel that introduced cold, oxygenated seawater into the lagoon. The lagoon lowering also stopped water from flooding the marsh and tules, which prevented a water quality issue from setting up,” Rutten said.

This time, the channel lasted just more than a week and the water quality improved for a minimum of two weeks, Rutten said. By substantially lowering the water volume, Rutten and his colleagues “reset” the lagoon by decreasing the temperature and mixing the stratified water column with oxygenated water. Seemingly temporary, the breach essentially bought time until the lagoon naturally breached on Nov. 30, Rutten said.

“We had no fish kill and subsequent water quality monitoring indicated the lagoon had high quality steelhead conditions from the surface to the bottom,” Rutten said.

This timely success will likely have no direct impact on future years’ stratification and poor water quality in the lagoon. However, a permit has been issued for a third breach, fish kills have currently been prevented and information has been gathered that will assist in determining a long-term solution. A major factor in assuring continued support of the lagoon relies on the formation of an independent science panel.

“The science panel process is proceeding well. Dr. John Largier, University of California [Davis] Bodega Marine Lab, has volunteered to chair the science panel. John is a recognized expert in estuarine science and I have a high degree of confidence in John’s leadership and scientific expertise,” Rutten said.

The information gathered by monitoring the water quality that affects healthy estuary conditions before and after the breach, and eyewitness accounts of the variability in fish kills will be provided to the panel to govern future planning.

“We absolutely learned a lot about how we will conduct the 2013 breach. We did collect a substantial amount of water quality data that will be provided to the science panel,” Rutten said.

Perhaps just as significant as the physical results, was the ability for the various organizations to conquer the years of bureaucratic dissonance and get to work.

“From NOAA’s perspective, the breach was an absolute success,” Rutten said. “This was the first ‘management’ effort in 18 years to prevent a fish kill and it worked.”

Our re-integration of permaculture’s land design with the Nature-Arts is a profound intersection to explore and work; to revive personal stories and gang-up to produce new community myths.
