A liana is any of various long-stemmed, woody vines that are rooted in the soil at ground level and use trees, as well as other means of vertical support, to climb up to the canopy to get access to well-lit areas of the forest. Lianas are especially characteristic of tropical moist deciduous forests and rainforests, including temperate rainforests. Lianas can form bridges amidst the forest canopy, providing arboreal animals with paths across the forest. These bridges can protect weaker trees from strong winds.

Dolio is the hero and journey maker for his people who reside 7 miles inland in the rain forest near Tamarindo, Province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. While most of what he knows about the west is apocalyptical, he is determined to deploy his jungle love to build additional income and a sacred union between the growing tourist trade and his extended family.

What many call “eco-alchemy” is called something else in his native language; Dolio is practicing important transition strategies to stay healthy and knows his part in the balancing act for a new sacred Earth.

One key idea for Dolio’s community is to live and work locally, keeping costs down - using abundant resources. A second guide is the caring for the community ethic from permaculture.

Liana is a multi-variety local rain forest woody vine that grows fast and has many uses in his village including lattice structure for the dome roofs, perimeter security and large baskets to carry dirt and food. Villagers wear the bright and colorful flowers when they are in bloom.

Dolio wants to create a sustainable village and sees a way to earn money for his people and share sacred values with the tourists on the beach through basket weaving workshops. But he is shielding westerners from his village at this time for health, legal and economic concerns.

The village council has adopted a resilience creed that means that they can teach and share goods and stories between the contrasting cultures using symbols, like vine baskets and flowers. The village understands the deeper spiritual power and service of their symbols and wants to bolster their use on the coast. Like on their new workshop banner, simple symbols do not need an interpreter.

Near the city of Cartago, Costa Rica, mighty Irazú stands watch over her domain. As the ancients tell, Irazú was the favorite daughter of a local leader, Aquitaba. The village where they lived was at war with a rival leader, Guarco, who wanted to control the entire valley. Desperate and fearing he would lose, Quitaba took Irazú to the highest peak and offered her in sacrifice to the gods to help him win the battle. As Guarco’s forces close in, Aquitaba called on the spirit of his daughter to help their people. Immediately the mountain where she had died exploded in fire and ash and rained destruction down on Guarco’s warriors. That day, the volcano became known as Irazú - making her unique among her male volcanic counterparts.

Conversation with Douglas and Willi -

ONE

Willi: Do you see any creative tension (mixing) between the Indigenous and western cultural myths and rituals in Costa Rica?

Douglas: I think its creative tension, definitely tension, as those who are experimenting are trying to compromise different traditions and ways. Sometimes it comes off as authentic, and sometimes as contrived. Don't you find? I think it's good that people are experimenting though. I am skeptical usually, but open to experience always.

Willi: Are there festivals or products that, as you say, create a compromise in the traditions there?

Douglas: I sense that there may be some but my feeling is that most of the impetus is coming from outside Costa Rica. It seems to be a kind of tourism. People come here with the desire for a mixing of indigenous and other traditions, but it doesn't seem to be a Costa Rican impulse for the most part. Costa Rica has a very small and poor indigenous population and the average "Western" Costa Rican is much more interested in a typical North American materialist value system and standard of success than with a traditional indigenous value system. There are some pockets where the indigenous worldview crosses over that I've seen, but it's quite rare.

TWO

Willi: What are the fundamental mythological concepts of the sustainability movement? Are these shared by all there?

Douglas: I'm not sure I am ready or qualified to answer this question. I don't even know if I have a good working definition of what a "mythological concept" is. I can say that there are a lot of mythological bits and pieces within the sustainability movement, many pertaining to Earthrise, Gaia, nature gods, justice, vengeance, cleansing/destruction, and more.

Willi: I like where you are going with this. It seems that you went with symbols of sustainability. If we insert permaculture for sustainability, what do you see? How about the Transition Movement? But, yes, there is a ton of experimenting going down in Gaia!

Douglas: So, I'm still not sure what you mean by "mythological concept". I guess I touched on some concepts before like cleansing/destruction and renewal above. I think these play a strong role in the sustainability movement. I think the concept of paradise, heaven on Earth, Eden, play a role in the movement too. There seems to be an unagreed-upon concept of the ideal that underlies some of the movement. Sadly, much of the sustainability movement is an opposition political position, and so a lot of the concepts that drive the movement are negative reactions to current unacceptable situations. Personally, I prefer to focus on a proactive utopic visioning, rather than a reactive negative motivating.

THREE

Willi: Does the hero work at the community level?

Douglas: I think this is a great question and would be a lot of fun to map through. Once again, I have to claim insufficient knowledge of the hero archetype and narrative to really answer this question adequately. It seems to me that certainly there are aspects of the hero story that could be transposed onto a community narrative. I do wonder though if there are sufficient individuals who have such a strong community identity to be able to identify themselves as strongly with their community as individuals do with individual heroes. This question arose in the webinar that I attended and I think its well worth exploring more deeply and fits in neatly with a lot of the thinking I am doing about utopic societies.

I would also like to note that while I think the hero archetype and narrative is something that we all know and appreciate, perhaps it is more useful for us in visioning the future to step away from that narrative in order to increase our collective appreciation of alternative narratives. The hero narrative seems to be the one we always look to for guidance, perhaps because it is the most developed, the most known, the most popular. But, what if we were to change the priority of our narrative desires to creating narratives that viewed "community" as the central character or actor without attaching the narrative structure of the hero to it?

I think this utopic visioning needs to see community as having its own narrative, detached from the hero story. I think this is what the Earth Charter tries to envision, as do stories and philosophies expounded in enlightenment political philosophy like The Social Contract, and stories including Utopia, Erewhon, and Ecotopia. Granted, these narratives, as well as all of the dystopias, are in some ways criticisms of present (or contemporary) communal rules and mores. These kinds of narratives are emerging all over the place, although they are presented in small bits and as criticism of certain aspects of contemporary society. I have been seeing a lot of the tiny house stories of late, and these seem to be one example of the emerging or reemerging narrative that speaks to lifestyle and community. The off-grid energy narrative is another. Any you are attracted to?

FOUR

Willi: How is Nature viewed in Costa Rica? By tourists? Locals? Business?

Douglas: Interestingly nature in Costa Rica is viewed by many as recreational and commercial (tourism). There is a decent segment of society here that reveres the natural world on a spiritual level, myself included, but those are less numerous. The Costa Rican identity is in flux at the moment and the nature aspect of it is pretty strong, although superficial too.

Willi: Can you name some of the "flux forces?"

Douglas: The flux forces here are the economy and materialism. Costa Rica is a country in transition. It is a middle class country with aspirations to be materially rich like the USA. The economic transition here is driving many towards materialistic values, although politically, the country understands better than most the value of nature and preservation. Still, there is, in my view, a perspective dichotomy among Costa Ricans between material aspirations and appreciation of nature. The material aspirations are favored over nature connection and as the economy creates greater differences between wealthy and poor, and the middle class is reduced, the value system will be ever more favorable towards the material and against the spiritual and natural.

FIVE

Willi: Is localization a viable strategy there? Has this influenced the stories?

Douglas: This concept is mostly carried out by foreigners here. It has not influenced the narrative here as far as I can tell.

Willi: Please describe what the foreigners are localizing!? How?

Douglas: Ok, I think you mean localization in the sense of an opposite to globalization. In this case, there are plenty of foreigners who are here creating small intentional communities, some with values similar to transition towns, a lot of permaculture, organic farming, etc. It's slightly colonial, but Costa Rica has always been heavily influenced by the USA, so the North Americans and Europeans who are here, some are very much into using superior economic wealth to create communities and retreats, many with values of localization, although their presence here is a result of globalization.

SIX

Willi: Is creation mythology a strong presence now?

Douglas: Not that I can tell. I like creation stories a lot. I just spent a week at the beach and I experience a lot of creation feelings when looking at the horizon, the vastness of the sea, sky, stars, sunset light. I enjoy listening to the physics folks discuss theories, enjoy the cosmology of Swimme and Berry, and appreciate the myths I know about the creation of the world.

Willi: If you were to write and produce a play with creation as the dominant theme, what elements / plots / mythic sources would you use?

Douglas: I don't know. I'm less interested in creating foundational myths as I am about visioning narratives for the future. The only thing that comes to mind in answer to the question is water, an element (compound) I have an affinity for and find is fundamental as a starting point for creation.

SEVEN

Willi: What is the role of initiation for the people? Are these coupled with resilience?

Douglas: I don't know what you mean by "role of initiation". Which people? Are you referring to rites of passage? Again, you'll have to define what definition of "resilience" you are using. I am familiar with more than one.

Willi: For resilience, see this work. Initiation is an active community & personal alchemy, a change; growth. It is a key principle in J. Campbell's work.

Douglas: Ok, I'll try and answer as best as I can, although I'm not entirely sure I'm on the same page as you regarding "initiation", which "people" you are referring to, and your understanding of "resilience". It seems to me that most people are reluctant to take the hero's journey and as such, avoid initiation entirely. In Costa Rica, most people, I find, are not very adventurous and most seek paths of less resistance. This seems to be normal most places I've lived. As for resilience, I'm not sure where that comes into the equation. Costa Rica seems average regarding resilience, although there is perhaps slightly more awareness on a political level of the dangers of global environmental change and economic instability, hence more resilience.

EIGHT:

Willi: Given that the Earth Charter's ethical vision proposes that environmental protection, human rights, equitable human development, and peace are interdependent and indivisible, what are some of the mythic artifacts that support this movement?

Douglas: Again, I am going to have to ask for a definition of "mythic artifacts". Perhaps, there is some of the answer above in the answer to your second question. I think the myths that speak to interdependence and interconnection include Indra's Net and the present mythology of the quantum theory. Does that answer help?

Willi: Artifacts as I find and develop them are key to the Myth Lab. Please dig in on this a bit....

Douglas: First of all, the Myth Lab looks fantastic. I will have to dig in when I have some time. Great work! I don't think I have an answer to your question really. There are perhaps elements of the different aspects of the Earth Charter in artifacts like green buildings, multi-use food spaces such as greenhouses that also serve as residences, organic community gardens, nature trails in preservation areas that support the flourishing of local communities, etc. I don't know how small an artifact can be that represents all of the facets of the Earth Charter.

Ok I think that's all for now. Thanks for all the back and forth. Very interesting and enlightening for me. I don't think I have the knowledge yet to adequately respond to you on many points, but I'm hopefully moving in a direction that will get me there eventually. Any tips on reading would be helpful. Believe me, Campbell is high on my list. I'm reading the Red Book at the moment and also a lot of theory on improvisation, which is my method of choice for exploration with groups.

Interview with Jen by Willi

Who or what is against sustainability?

Anyone who claims to be against sustainability really doesn’t understand it – the principles make sense for any business or political leader to get behind.

Continuous pursuit of growth is not possible with our limited resources. How do you convince Boards to adopt a new paradigm based on scarcity?

Framing the conversation around scarcity is the right way to go, because business people understand that limited supply means increased cost. We frame the discussion around the increased costs of energy, water, shipping and materials that climate change will bring to businesses.

Another good angle is to discuss risk and the uncertainty that climate change will bring to global commerce – extreme weather events will worsen, which means supply transport will be disrupted and costs will increase. If you look out far enough, most organizations face some increased risk due to climate change and it’s just good business practice to look at how those risks will impact the bottom line.

How do you see the impact of fracking in CA? Which side are you on?

Fracking hasn’t become a runaway industry in California the way it has in other parts of the country, but it looks like that may change. Given the immediate challenge posed by climate change, and especially the onslaught of wildfires we’ve had in the region, I am cautiously in favor of fracking as a means to move us off of more carbon intensive sources of energy.

Unfortunately, we’re in a position where we need to choose the lesser of two evils. Of course, water contamination is a big concern and I believe we need more stringent regulation around water table contamination and protections for landowners.

Tell us about the challenges in branding sustainability? Is this different from a “regular” corp.?

Companies that choose to brand themselves with a sustainability message do face additional challenges in terms of public scrutiny, and they also have to offer increased transparency in order to demonstrate how they operate sustainably. This honesty is often rewarded in the court of public opinion, though. In the age of social media the public appreciates transparency and open discussions around sustainability, even if a company hasn’t totally solved a problem yet.

Gov. Brown’s water pipeline to the distant farms in the central valley is far from a done deal. Who owns CA’s water, Jennifer?

Water rights in California are a very complicated issue going back hundreds of years. Since California’s farmers provide nearly half of the country’s fruits, vegetables and nuts and CA ag generates $37.5 billion a year, this industry is obviously tremendously important to the country’s health and the state’s economy - more than 90% of farms are owned by family farmers. However, there is no doubt we could do a better job incentivizing water conservation in the agriculture industry.

How is sustainability like a religion?

I wouldn’t describe it that way, since most sustainability practices are based in science (consider Herman Daly’s writing on the first and second laws of thermodynamics and how they should inform economics) rather than faith.

Can you give us a story about sustainability that could one day rise to a universal myth?

Principals of using what you have, not borrowing from the future (making loans you can’t repay), considering the needs of others, and the long term consequences of greed are all prominent in sustainability.

Can you think of any new community or family rituals that are based in sustainability metrics or laws?

Families have always done a better job of teaching sustainability than companies – every basic we teach our kids from “share” to “do the right thing” has a sustainability corollary. If executives ran companies the same way they taught their kids to act, we’d live in a more sustainable world.

What is your understanding of permaculture and its low tech role in a sustainable future?

Permaculture is a great way to reduce water and pesticide use. We need to find a way to bring these practices back into the agriculture system.

Ritual (2)

(a) A ritual “is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and designed to influence preternatural entities or forces on behalf of the actors’ goals and interests.” Rituals may be prescribed by the traditions of a community, including a religious community.

(b) Semi-regular gathering of family or community members that share a Nature-based experience, value or dream often associated with formal roles and traditions. (W. Paul)

Universal

(c) A globally understood sign (i.e. – meaning) that mandates care for all cultures. (W. Paul)

Return

(d) To come back home; re-integrate; initiate; honor and acknowledge the sacred in all things. (W. Paul)

New Sharing & Return Rituals

The Return of Ivory to Native Lands

In Chiang Mai, Thailand, elephants are healed and cared for on farms for visitors and locals alike. The big mammals are protected from poachers and considered sacred. Are they our equals? Can we see that Asian elephants and all earthly beings are part of a global family? That the return of stolen tusks from world-wide black markets is an act of healing, honor and learning with Nature. Tusk revenue returned to the farms support preservation and education. This program of “international return” to local care is a ritual of love, sharing and support.

Soil Building

With neighbors we clear grass heavy lands with controlled fires and shovels as a safety precaution and for soil building, turning-over the burnt wood and ash, adding compost from the neighborhood bins and then re-planting. With permaculture, we share knowledge and resources to keep fire on our side and to obtain healthy soils and sustainable yields.

Harvest Dance

Together we celebrate both Nature and Permaculture calendars, our union of science and spirit at last. Picking each crop as it matures, teaching the youth to dance, to sort, peel, prepare and cook for their sharing dance, a seasonal celebration.

Taking Down the Fences

Localization in the back yard! From a pragmatic point of view, taking down your fences can mean better friendships with your neighborhoods, a heightened sharing opportunity! Property lines are gone, yielding larger gardens and shared yields! Here is a return to our extended family of humans and animals, increasing views and openings to a local horizon; building resilience, trust and sharing between often fearful and isolated strangers.

The Convergence

The New College is born! The Convergence is a spirit recharger, a fun zone, full of agriculture lessons, dancing allowed! The Convergence brain thrust propels our union, sharing tech and spirit alike; accelerating our paradigm shift to a new land.

Sharing Expo

Bring what you have, take what you need. Ask a question, make a friend! Extend the Good Will model? The Sharing Expo is a true “Win-Win”, building and sharing the new network all at once; dissolving capitalism with new rituals.

“The sharing transformation shows that it’s possible to govern ourselves, build a green economy that serves everyone, and create meaningful lives together. It also shows that we can solve the world’s biggest challenges - like poverty and global warming - by unleashing the power of collaboration. At the core of the sharing transformation is timeless wisdom updated for today – that it’s only through sharing, cooperation, and contribution to the common good that it’s possible to create lives and a world worth having.”

This is a Transition Movement idea that started as a creative story idea but then morphed into a potential “real world” specification. We need to invent the future now if we are to live in it.

Let’s dream, and act, locally.

We need to design systems that fit out values and changing resources in the Chaos Age.

The wolf knocked on the door and said, "Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

"No, no," said the little pig. "By the hair of my chinny chin chin, I will not let you come in."

"Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in," said the wolf.

So he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed. The house of straw fell down and the wolf ate up the first little pig.

* * * * * * *
Define Urgency -

1. Importance requiring swift action.
[ i.e. - ”the discovery of the ozone hole gave urgency to the issue of CFCs" ]

2. An earnest and persistent quality; insistence
[ i.e. - ”Emilia heard the urgency in his voice" ]

Define resiliency -

A. Psychological resilience is defined as an individual’s ability to properly adapt to stress and adversity. It can be learned and developed by virtually anyone. Resilience should be considered a “learned behavior.”

B. In Transition we are particularly looking at the resilience of our towns and communities. We are looking at their ability to provide for us in the future. How vulnerable are they to shocks that might come from outside our communities and beyond our control? The more resilient among us are better able to bounce back and keep going.

C. Permaculture … seems to speak to resilience by seeking to integrate … sustainable elements (e.g., water catchment, renewable energy, district heating, food growing, waste recycling, transportation, etc.) into a whole system that operates efficiently so that the number of inputs are minimized but outputs attained are maximized. The goal is to create an ecosystem that provides as many useful products and functions out of the system as the designer's abilities allow while healing the planet.

* * * * * * *
Many see that the time for deep changes is at hand! Urgency must now be bundled with resiliency as we shift from Earth-based energy sources to human-engineered ones like swales, peddles and myths.

What are the implications of a global shift from consumers to sharers?

Who is the wolf?

* * * * * * *
“Think of California as the planet in microcosm. Mankind came to this Eden, settled it and ravaged its rivers, soiled its skies and eventually transformed it into a furnace. We’ll need drought-resistant plants and lots of sunscreen to survive our purgatory. Unfortunately, there’s plenty of evidence here that we haven’t yet learned the lesson of the biblical parable in which we’re living.”

Interview with Delaney by Willi -

How are you using the system to change it?

We’re in the system, and to some extent, we must use the system to change it. But we also need to step outside of the ‘box of allowable activism’ in order to see that the system is rigged in favor of the Corporations.

People have inherent rights established by our constitutions, amendments, initiative processes, etc. But they are buried under years of re-centralized power, where regulations, originally crafted to protect these rights, are now rewritten by the Corporations. The permit process is a good example of why people need to approach our challenges differently.

Our best approach is the initiative system – one of the last remnants of our right to local self-government in action – where we can write and pass laws that protect the people’s health, safety, and welfare at the community level, instead of the corporate-written laws that advance corporate profits over people and the planet. These people’s laws strengthen our right to govern ourselves free from corporate interference, and fundamentally challenge the existing structure of law that has been manufactured to advance corporate interests over the people’s well-being.

What are the historical foundations for the emerging community rights movement?

Well, we can go back to the U.S. Declaration of Independence, or here in Oregon, Article 1, Section 1 of our State Constitution where ‘all power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority’. These documents or declarations often emerge from confrontations with oppressive powers. Look at the abolitionist and suffragette struggles; community rights movements are definitely part of our history.

When existing laws violate human and natural rights, protests, civil disobedience, and legal challenges ensue. People don’t want to break laws just to have clean water or to prevent eminent domain or to stop Corporations from destabilizing their communities, but when the system of law is broken, what other choices do they have?

How does “self-governance” work in your vision?

I think we already see what self-governance could look like – it just isn’t sustainable. When communities initiate local food markets, when small businesses set up shop, when organizations work on behalf of homeless populations, when environmental groups organize to stop pipelines and fracking, those are all attempts at self-governance. And it ‘works’ when powerful interests cannot overturn the will of the people. If a community decides they want GMO labeling for their food, then any Corporation doing business in their town will need to abide by their rules. It’s really just democracy in action.

However, as people in communities nationwide, we need to take the next logical step to pass local laws that protect our health, safety, and welfare because this is self-governance. We need to remind our government that it works for the benefit of the people, and not corporations. Until our government and legal system get that straight, we the people have to do it ourselves.

Is CRLC advocating succession from local, county and State governments?

No. We don’t want to break away and build new governments; we just want ours to function on behalf of the people, instead of the Corporations.

Don’t we, as shareholders, own and direct the corporations?

It’s an argument currently employed by University Presidents and Foundation leaders who reject calls for fossil-fuel divestment; many of these institutions argue that they have more leverage holding shares in these companies than they would if they sold them off. The most glaring problem with this line of reasoning is the lack of evidence that they are helping drive these Big Corporations away from harm and toward better business practices. I’m not saying that it never happens, but the amount of energy and organization just to get these people to the table…, and then we’re still stuck with a structure of law that rules for the corporations almost every single time.

But most people are not shareholders of the multinational corporations that are running this country right now, and we’re stuck with suffering the decisions of corporate shareholders who lives hundreds and thousands of miles away from our communities. The corporations’ singular duty is to make profit for its shareholders – who are not us. We can’t expect corporations to put people over profit, but we can expect that our government is authorized to manage corporations so that both corporations and government work for the best interests of the people.

What are your favorite fiction or non-fiction stories from your work with CRLC?

Most people remember pivotal moments from their lives where what they believed to be true, was no longer true. We hear story after story about the first time people heard Thomas Linzey, the environmental attorney and CELDF’s Executive Director, speak about the failure of environmental laws and how they’ve been battered about in a system of rules created by the big polluters. Many people in Oregon first came into contact with Linzey at the PIELC, the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference.

And if you didn’t see him at the event, someone sent you a link to the video. He relayed several stories about people trying to protect their homes, land, and water - people who were repeatedly told, often by their own government, that they did not have the right to say no to corporate harms.

It’s astonishing to arrive at the realization that our structure of law works great for Corporations but no longer recognizes (real) people as having those same rights. The very framework we were brought up to believe in is now more fantasy than reality. It’s a pretty powerful thing when you wake up to this fact.

Tell us about the Charter Amendment to Protect the Right to a Local Food System by LocalFoodRights.com

This Charter Amendment will protect our local food system – local farmers, farmers’ markets, community–supported agriculture and more – by recognizing our community’s right to local food and by banning GMO agriculture. We will pass this law in defiance of state law that tells us our community cannot say no to corporate agriculture. We cannot stand idly by while our local food system is exterminated by Big Ag.

This Charter Amendment is a part of a triumvirate of local initiatives that seek to protect the people’s right to self-government by law, as well as the community’s health, safety, and welfare, which includes economic and environmental well-being. We must proactively seize our authority as We the People to protect ourselves, families and community from corporate control. To do nothing, it too accepts that status quo in which corporations reign.

What other State, regional and national groups are you partnering with?

The Oregon Community Rights Network, the National Community Rights Network, Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), Support Local Food Rights (SLFR) and 350.org/Eugene.

What is your worst fear and greatest hope for the future?

One of my worst fears is being realized. Just look at Denton, Texas. A local community passes a law to ban fracking, and now banning fracking is illegal. Through the current system of law, Texas ruled that Corporations have the power to tell communities that they must endure the externalities of a hazardous and polluting industry. This is a blatant refusal to recognize people as rights bearing citizens with the power to determine how they want to live their lives. It’s no longer deal making in the back room, we’re being told to our face to go away. When your government argues for ruinous corporations and tells the electorate to get lost, we’re in big trouble.

My greatest hope for the future is that these very public confrontations help wake people up. The adage ‘united we stand, divided we fall’ is staring us down. It’s in our best interest to realize the truth and work together to change the system, because the Corporations will not alter harmful behaviors on their own. We the People need to work together and change the system now.

Willi: I am creating new Nature-born and modern community sharing rituals. Spiritual not religious in construct. Do you share this calling? Any examples?

Gregory: Well, that depends on how you define spiritual and religious. If by spiritual and not religious you mean non-restrictive, relying less on institutions, free-flowing, open, and allowing for personalization, then sure. But if you mean “anything goes”, no intellectual foundations, fuzzy thinking, no boundaries, no principles – then I can share much of your efforts, but will likely find them without adequate foundations to endure or be meaningful in a communal setting. If spirituality becomes too idiosyncratic, it becomes difficult to ground community around such.

Willi: Can the community be the hero now?

Gregory: Yes, I think we may be witnessing a move away from the unhealthy individualism that has us all embarking on isolated quests toward an awareness that we are moving forward, evolving in a collective, communal way. The best journeys are a mix of personal and communal affairs. Additionally, the notion of the separation of the individual from the community is somewhat artificial.
