The portrayal of shamans and shamanic experience in film has changed over the years. Shamans were previously depicted as malevolent witch doctors. This has shifted as indigenous cultures gained more respect; a number of movies made by native people have provided more accurate portrayals.
This monthly film series is open to the public and features ethnographic as well as commercial films. For those who wish to stay, there will be refreshments and discussion afterward.
This monthly series will resume in August.
In The Last Wave, a white Australian lawyer, played by Richard Chamberlain, has his life disrupted after he takes on a case for Aboriginal defendants of a tribal “murder” done non-physically by the shaman when sacred secrets were violated. Chamberlain experiences dreams and synchronous connections to the small group of local Aborigines. A new Armageddon is prophesied. (1977)
