Dissertation and Depth Research Funding

Do you have any stories about research funding (especially dissertation funding and grants) to share? I'm just kicking off the dissertation phase at Pacifica and looking to compile some information for others. I'd love to hear your success, near success, or perhaps not so successful stories!
