Fellow DPA members: Sean Arthur Joyce’s book of poetry, Dead Crow and the Spirit Engine, draws heavily on Jungian ideas of the shadow, mythology, and other matters of interest to depth psychologists. Dead Crow is Art’s 8th book (four poetry, three history, one novel). A possible solstice/Christmas gift?

Dead Crow and the Spirit Engine answers the call for a “new mythology” by making use of Crow archetypes found the world over to create a unique new character, Dead Crow. In humanity’s oldest known epic poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, a raven, not a dove, is sent out from the ark during the Great Flood in search of dry land. Raven or Crow has since become an iconic figure in world literature, occurring in nearly all cultures. It’s appropriate that Dead Crow would appear now, during a pandemic. Dead Crow feeds off both the culture and the collective consciousness to seek meaning wherever it may be found.

“Joyce steeps the reader in rich imagery and myth, delivering a message that … is redemptive. Wonderful writing. Wonderful concept. Executed to perfection (or close to it).” —Author Brian D’eon

“Individual passages glow with lyric intensity and individual lines can have epigrammatic force…. A work 10 years in the making and based on deep scholarship, Dead Crow & the Spirit Engine presents the reader with extensive challenges and rich rewards.” —Author & Professor Emeritus of English Literature Roger C. Lewis

“You have created a masterpiece in poetical words. It connects spirituality, historical and mythological knowledge with your very own thoughts, fears, opinions and fantastic way of imagination—combined with an outstanding, beautiful design.” —Author Elisabeth von Ah
