Hi everyone,

In case you haven't seen it, this schedule/news just in from the Nor Cal Dream Institute (founded by the esteemed Meredith Sabini) in Berkeley... (BTW, if anyone is going to some or all of IASD, let me know so we can all connect there)

Dear Community,

We're turning the corner into June and looking forward to summer. We are hosting many different events throughout the summer months, June, July, and August. Please be sure to check our website for complete details (www.dream-institute.com)

We are particularly pleased to be showing another film, "Breakthrough: Art, Analysis, and the Liberation of the Creative Spirit" next Friday, June 8th.

Also, the International Association for the Study of Dreams is holding its annual conference in Berkeley at the end of June. Meredith Sabini, Richard Russo, John Beebe, and others will be presenting. See below for more details.

We hope you will join us!

Breakthrough: Art, Analysis, and the Liberation of the Creative Spirit (film)

Friday June 8, 7-9pm, $20

This film captures the intimate experience of eight artists who have had psychoanalytic treatment, demonstrating the growth and freedom made possible by facing the pain that both psychoanalysis and creation bring into awareness. The artists presented in Breakthrough found themselves held back in their lives and work because of traumatic events and unresolved emotional issues from the past. The film shows how the combination of analytic therapy and creative work liberated them. Rather than dulling an artist’s creative edge, analysis facilitates personal growth and creative freedom. Produced by the Lucy Daniels Foundation (50 mins).

“Big Dreams”: How to Recognize Them

Meredith Sabini

Wednesday June 13, 7-9pm

Most indigenous cultures distinguished between "small" dreams that pertain only to the dreamer and "big" dreams that pertain to the life of the tribe. Joseph won his freedom by correctly interpreting the Pharaoh's dream of seven fat and seven lean cows as prophetic of Egypt's coming years of plenty and of famine. C. G. Jung had prophetic dreams of WWI but initially mistook them to be "small" personal ones. You will hear these and other historic and contemporary examples of big dreams and learn guidelines for recognizing them when they occur. Big dreams you may have had are most welcome.

IASD Conference in Berkeley, June 2012

The International Association for the Study of Dreams, whose headquarters is in our building, will host their 29th annual conference at the Doubletree Hotel at the Berkeley Marina, June 22–26. This event brings together writers, researchers, academics, artists, therapists, and laypeople to share and celebrate dreams. Please visit www.iasdreams.org for more information.

Below are programs to be presented by Meredith Sabini with John Beebe and Richard Russo.

Saturday June 23 2:00–4:00 pm CE Program
The Objective Dimension in Dreams and Dreaming
Meredith Sabini and John Beebe
An emphasis on the subjective, personal meanings of dreams tends to overlook their many objective aspects. The dreaming mind faces outward and inward. The presenters will discuss this distinction with examples of dreams that show other people objectively, concern issues in the world, and present elements requiring objective (factual) amplification.

Sunday June 24 11:30–12:30 pm CE Program
Diagnostic Information in Initial Dreams
Meredith Sabini
Initial dreams are a singular type: the dreaming mind’s concerted effort to convey objectively to a new therapist the nature of a client’s suffering and possible healing. Careful attention can improve assessment and treatment planning. Examples related to trauma, suicidality, depression, psychosis, borderline dynamics, and spiritual emergence will be given.

Monday June 25 2:30–4:00 pm
Dreams of the Great Turning
Richard Russo and Meredith Sabini
This presentation explores what dreams might be saying about the fundamental paradigm shift that our culture is undergoing, drawing on “big” dreams collected in the past year at the Dream Institute of Northern California, including some from a current series of special Culture Dreaming sessions, on the theme of the “Great Turning” (Joanna Macy). Audience members will have an opportunity to share and discuss their own “big dreams” and/or dreams of the Great Turning.
