Introduction

Hi, all!

I’m looking forward to connecting with all of you in this wonderfully diverse and fascinating group! My own interest in Depth Psychology has been focused around in its extraordinary explanatory power for understanding various aspects of practical spirituality. I came to learn about Depth Psychology as a young man seeking relief from childhood trauma. Although I didn’t know it at the time, my most effective forms of self-treatment for my trauma issues, prior to discovering Depth Psychology, were music and spirituality. In later years, through Depth Psychology (primarily Carl Jung and Freud) I recognized these lifelong passions as having played integral roles in my own healing, and as being in themslves elements of a Depth Psychological approach to healing.

Some of the milestones on my journey include quitting school when I was fifteen years old and becoming a professional musician. Many years later, after studying the works of Jung and other Jungians, I went back to school and eventually earned an MTS in pastoral counseling and theology, and a doctorate in the History of Religions (focusing on the use of music in religious practice cross-culturally). I currently teach the academic study of religion online for a number of schools, and I also have a small counseling and coaching practice. My current goals include finding ways to help others to learn more about the importance of the practical, healing elements of Depth Psychology through personal growth work and spiritual practice.

I look forward to working with and learning from everyone here!

All the best,
James

  • James, I'm so glad you were on the call last night in spite of the late hour. I appreciate that you list some of your goals here as relating to the "practical, healing elements" of depth psych. It's so easy for me to get caught up into too much literal concrete detail or to tip to the other side and get lost in the "otherworld." I think the balance of practical and healing is critical in the work of the soul steward.

  • James, I am so glad you are part of this group. I didn't know a lot of what you shared here (including that you are a musician). I want to support you in your goals as best I can (if you give a webinar on anything I am there!)...Blessings, D
