The image of Mary Magdalene as a penitent prostitute, which dominated Western culture for 1,400 years, has given way in recent times to a plethora of portrayals. However, a careful reading of both the New Testament and the so called Gnostic texts reveals an image essential for our times: that of a female disciple of Jesus’ inner circle whose own teachings point the way for inner transformation, illumination and wholeness. Drawing on both traditional and Gnostic scriptures as well as legends of Provence, we will explore the pivotal place Mary Magdalene has held in both traditional and esoteric Christianity as the Apostle to the Apostles, an understanding exploding in our time in works of art, literature and music.
