There are times in the life of any organization when the question “How are we doing?” needs to be asked. This program will demonstrate how dreams can be converted into a resource for organizational development: for evaluating how well goals are being met; clarifying problem areas; brainstorming new modes of outreach; revitalizing the staff, board, or membership.

Culture DreamingSM is a deceptively simple yet powerful method, based on field and emergence theories, by which dreams told by participants are explored not for their meaning to the dreamer but their relevance to organizational issues. The assumption is that a cluster of dreams from people in the same organization will reflect, when viewed as a whole, the dynamics of that larger body.

In the first part, dreams are told by participants without comment, one dream triggering another in a cascade effect. In the second part, we listen again to this newly co-created narrative as if it were one big dream. Facilitators then encourage “serious play” with the themes and motifs in the dream narrative to discover their links to larger issues. No personal information is disclosed.

Culture DreamingSM derives from indigenous dream council practices as well as the Social Dreaming Matrix method developed at Tavistock Institute by Gordon Lawrence. This three-part program will be a living laboratory, providing a didactic and experiential introduction to the unique Culture DreamingSM process. Participants will gain an appreciation for its use in organizations of any size, age, or mission, with staff, members, or board.

Open to: Organizational consultants, executive directors of nonprofits, CEOs, department heads, or managers from any field—educational, commercial, governmental, political, sociocultural.

Facilitated by Meredith Sabini and Richard Russo, who developed Culture Dreaming and have offered it at The Dream Institute and other organizations since 2004.
