June 21-27, 2012 in Vermont with Animas Valley Institute guides Ann Roberts and Charles Lawrence

There's a big difference between getting old and being a true elder, between withdrawing from active contribution to the community and embracing the call to share one's wisdom and gifts. Aging can be a time of fading of passion and purpose or an opportunity for new growth and beginnings. In a society where elderhood does not hold its historical place of honor, those called to elderhood must consciously claim this role. If you are in or nearing your senior years and feeling this call, Embracing Elderhood is a rare opportunity to prepare yourself for an elderhood of continual growth, passion and service.

We will employ deep imagery, dreamwork, a day of solitude in nature, teachings about human development from the Wheel of Life and participating in Council to provide the opportunity to identify and validate the wisdom and talents that are the fruits of decades of life experience. You'll explore your attitudes and fears about aging and be challenged to let go of beliefs, attachments and self-identifications that stand in the way of claiming your elderhood. You'll widen and deepen your understanding of calling and the gifts you have to give as an elder. The program will conclude with you having an opportunity to design and enact a ceremony of commitment to your conscious elderhood. Your guides are elders who are experienced in and passionately committed to midwife others into this stage of life that is so essential to personal fulfillment, life-valuing cultural change, and the long-term health of our communities. To participate, you do not need exceptional health or fitness, but you do need commitment.
