Introducing his 1924 translation of the I CHING, Richard Wilhelm wrote "Of far greater significance than the use of the Book of Changes as an oracle is its other use, namely, as a book of wisdom." The core text Wilhelm used was current in 1050 BCE but its sources can be found as early as 1600 BCE. John Beebe, who has had much experience with Cary Baynes’ English rendering of the Wilhelm translation which Jung introduced, will share how he has used this I CHING as a guide to personal integrity.
For many years Phyllis Stowell has also drawn on the I CHING to find illumination in the moment and inspiration for creative work. She will share her recent discovery of a new translation by Margaret J. Pearson that reaches back to an earlier, nature-based form of the oracle, one less gendered than the Confucian sources Wilhelm relied upon.
John Beebe is a Jungian analyst and past president of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. As a boy, he lived in China for two years. Now he visits the country annually to teach. John is the author of Integrity in Depth. His newest book is Energies and Patterns in Psychological Type: The reservoir of consciousness.
Phyllis Stowell has an MA in creative writing and a PhD in depth psychology and poetry. She is Co-chair of Friends of the C. G. Jung Institute, San Francisco; Professor Emerita, Saint Mary's College, and founding member of SMC MFA. She has authored eight volumes of poetry, including the bilingual art/poetry book SHIELD/ Bouclier with art by Pacia Sallomi, and is co-editor of APPETITE, Food as Metaphor, An Anthology of Women's Poetry (BOA Edtions, Ltd). Her most recent publication is A CAST OF COINS, which derived from the I CHING.
