James Hillman And A Therapy of Ideas: An Online Program

“My goal is to create a therapy of ideas, to try to bring in new ideas, so that we can see the same old patterns differently.” - James Hillman

In conjunction with our 40th anniversary year and in acknowledgement of the critical contributions of the founder of archetypal psychology, James Hillman, Pacifica Graduate Institute is launching an online, ongoing series on “James Hillman and a Therapy of Ideas.” Leading scholars will explore ideas that Dr. Hillman “put on the couch,” showing how he brought fresh insights and reimaginings, changing forever the way we see old patterns differently, and new events as replications of old patterns.

The inaugural series includes:

Section One: Introduction: A Therapy of Ideas with Glen Slater, PhD
Section Two: Psychotherapy with Joseph Coppin, PhD
Section Three: War with Ipek S. Burnett, PhD
Section Four: Psyche and Eros with Safron Rossi, PhD
Section Five: Dreams with Stephen Aizenstat, PhD
Section Six: Psychology and Religion with Thomas Moore, PhD

For each of the six sections, participants will:

  • Receive key readings (as PDFs) on the "idea on the couch";
  • View a 40-50 minute video lecture;
  • Deepen into the idea through optional supplemental reading and viewing experiences; and
  • Participate in a rich small online discussion seminar led by key scholars in the field.

Minimal participation time, including video lectures, reading, and online discussion, averages approximately four hours per week, depending on individual reading speed and the extent of participation in online discussion. Each section spans two weeks, allowing for a week of individual reading, viewing, and contemplating the idea, and a second week for a collective online discussion, allowing for spacious sharing as we unpack and expand each idea. The course is asynchronous, where weekly course activities are scheduled at the convenience of the participant.

The online seminar leaders will include Dr. Jennifer Leigh Selig, Dr. Joseph Coppin, and Dr. Ipek S. Burnett. Additional seminar leaders may be added as well.

Leading Hillman scholar Edward Casey wrote, “James Hillman proposed that ideas, far from being abstract and secondary, are primary presences for the exploration and expansion of soul.” Join us for this unique opportunity for the exploration and expansion of your soul as we explore these powerful ideas together in community.

Weekly course activities are scheduled at the convenience of the participant. The program is limited to 15 participants.
