From Jung’s Red Book and stone carvings to abstract painting and avant garde poetry, we explore the transformative powers of language and image as both creation and discovery.
This illustrated program begins by exploring the varied approaches of C.G. Jung, Henry Corbin and James Hillman to the common project of freeing the human person from the prison of subjectivity. We then explore links between the visions of the imagination of Henry Corbin, archetypal psychology, and those expressed in the work of a selection of contemporary poets and artists. We will consider art and poetry in the context of creative imagination as the transformative source of spontaneity and freedom. With reference to poetry and abstract art since 1945 we will discuss the tensions between tradition and creativity, dogma and heresy, reason and passion, meaning and nonsense. The fundamental aim of the program is to help release the natural flow of creativity that is the deepest source of energy and joy in all of us.
Tom Cheetham is the author of five books on the function of imagination in religion, psychology and the arts, and one book of poems. He is a Fellow of the Temenos Academy in London and Adjunct Professor of Human Ecology at the College of the Atlantic. He lectures regularly in Europe and the US. He and his wife live on a homestead in rural Maine. They have two grown children.
