The portrayal of shamans and shamanic experience in film has changed over the years. Shamans were previously depicted as malevolent witch doctors. This has shifted as indigenous cultures gained more respect; a number of movies made by native people have provided more accurate portrayals. Shamans and shamanic experience now tend to be shown in a positive light, albeit with an exotic spin.
