Therapy cannot be divorced from society. Sometimes, therapy reinforces conformity and hence works as a tool of society. Equally often, therapy offers a profound critique of the norms and assumptions of any given society. These ideas can sometimes be presented in an abstract and academic way that cuts them off from ordinary clinical work. So therapists and clients cannot develop a socially and politically sensitive praxis.
