Image is soul and vice versa, as Jung, Hillman, and other pioneers in depth psychology believe.

What do you think of this image, emerging via social media of an African American police officer helping a man wearing a T-shirt with a swastika imprint when tempers—and temperatures—rose in South Carolina this weekend? What is your depth psychological take on this situation?

From Yahoo News:

White-supremacist groups and African-American demonstrators clashed in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, resulting in at least five arrests and seven people taken to hospitals as tensions — and temperatures — flared following the recent decision to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds.

But it was the powerful image of a black police officer assisting a man wearing a black T-shirt bearing a swastika and struggling in the heat that resonated online.

In the photo, the officer, Leroy Smith, is seen holding the arm of the unidentified protester as he helped him up the stairs and out of the sun. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Columbia hit a high of 98 degrees Saturday.

The image was uploaded to Twitter by Rob Godfrey, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s deputy chief of staff. And it quickly went viral.

  • It would resonate with me more if the officer were a civilian.
  • Good morning All - my initial take on "watching and listening to the live news cast" was good to see people in South Carolina rally - constitutional right to express strong roots/views connected to historic causes, battles surrounding race/creed. The comment from the last man at the end was so spot on...something like they cannot [either side] leave it alone [be in peace] with each other [harmony], so what are you going to do?

Citizens come out with their flags raised, rallying and protesting their cause...views...ancient discord manifests as more time is needed and shall be spent on processing these toxic, ancient, origin issues - deeply embedded festering wounds...

The images...the flag symbols remain strong ones across sands of time, through ancestry blood lines [traumatogenetic memory], triggered by some recent event...to manifest once again...symbolic of specific historic times...what was endured/undone or overcome...perhaps where we hope we can all evolved into...these manifestations...constantly  upsurging since antiquity...humanity is constantly working through unresolved ancestral remnants [injustices/abuses]: ambiguity, discord and discontent...

3 different flags/voices were raised at the same time, in the same place... on this day:

    - The Confederate Flag - this battle flag is symbolic of deep southern roots/cultural values...the fall of this battle flag from legislative grounds is understandable for the 21st c ...a nation of people who hold their democratic country...freedoms and liberties, near + dear to their hearts...removal from state 'legislative' grounds and onto 'historic' museums sites [history to heal], presents as a step towards healing to me...

However, there is a lot of unprocessed grief work spilled and absorbed into many lands...all over the globe ...and it is timely when the people bring forth potent images/symbols and voice as the preceding news story about the 'fall of the Confederate Flag' from legislative ground into history...and two other flags also were raised to reappear on this day...

    - The Black Panthers Flag is symbolic of the Afro-American membership and assertions of 'Black Power' ... the struggles emancipating from slavery towards being "free" - democracy: liberties, rights and freedoms...

    - The National Socialist Movement Party Flag is symbolic of the Aryan, neo-Nazi membership and assertions of 'White Power' ... white supremacy views protection of white 'blood' lines/race maintaining 14th century land barren ideals [falls nicely and back into Tomas More's Utopia discussion]...

This news clip was a about a positive rally in southern USA - mostly peaceful, flag bearing, demonstrations and protesting did occur...and in the midst of the environmental heat of that day - the human "caring' spirit factor rose above the flags, banners, postures of the different skin colours/creeds - and one person had the vision and eye of depth to capture the real magic of that rally/day...two men of different races together, one helping the other to get out of [escape]...the heat of the day...and skin colour was irrelevant.  This moment rings true and there is HOPE!

It appears to be hard for many folks to let go of the battles, flags, symbols, images connected to battles and ancestors - we continually drug up the past...digging in the dirt...trying to learn something new...Peace + Love Linda
