Week 4 Readings

Exploring the zombie myth has left myth with a better understanding of how myths in general can evolve over time.  The zombie story has been told in numerous ways and I favor the ones that are overtly comical (Army of Darkness, Shaun of the Dead, etc.) In reflecting on Craig's comment that "what we repress we strengthen, but also warp," I wonder how much of the humor that is found in the zombie retelling is not due to a distorted relationship to fear considering that fear seems to be such a prevalent means of behavioral control for Big Machine, scaring us into submission, or perhaps it is just simply the filmmakers pushing the horror envelope to such an extreme that the horror becomes "unreal" and comedic. Either way I find myself not knowing whether to laugh or cry, sometimes both, in my attempt to understand what the appropriate response is in many of today's dilemmas.

On another note, I "encountered" my first mosquito in San Francisco last night-- a nice reminder that they are often an overlooked aspect of the zombie constellation. Perhaps the visit was a nudge to reexamine their role as messenger more than parasite and apply myth accordingly in the future.
