August Planetary Movements

Thought I would share what I wrote for a column in the SLO Coast Journal:

August carries the heat from the summer Sun in the fire element of Leo.  The flooding nature of the preponderance of planetary bodies in the water signs of Cancer; Scorpio and Pisces continues, yet fails to extinguish the Solar Fire whose origins trace back to the Sun god Prometheus. We are told he… ”brought the fire of mind to Earth in order that the tribe of men might cherish the spark of divinity within their hearts and souls” (Moore, 1978, p. 440).

The gift of fire feeds the flame of creative inspiration known to many as the state of being “In-Spirit”. We sense a feeling of restlessness, urging us to give form to these energies around the time of the New Moon on August 6th in the fire sign of Leo. What begins as a spark of imagination intensifies from the combined strength of the Sun and Moon stationed in the same fire element of Leo. The Sun is our source of life. The Moon is our containment. The quality of the fire element in Leo is fixed. The alchemical blending of the element of fire with the quality of fixed provides all of us with a courageous heart to inspire without question, unless we choose to live from the vantage point of egocentrism. The Lionhearted in all of us is yearning to be freed. Be audacious in all of your endeavors.

The complexity of understanding the dynamic process of planetary motion is heightened by another aspect of interpretation which involves the characterization of the quality assigned to that energy. There are three styles when referencing qualities: cardinal, fixed and mutable. The three qualities: cardinal, fixed and mutable were assigned to each of the astrological signs in a particular order, based on the beginning, middle and ending of a season from centuries of observation of the heavens and the earth by the ancient astrologers.

The first of the three qualities is cardinal. There are four cardinal signs: Aries; Cancer; Libra and Capricorn whose role is to be agents of change, each in their own unique way. The characterization of cardinal signs as agents of change is in alignment with their seasonal appearance at the beginning of spring, summer, fall and winter, respectively.

From August 24th through the 27th, we will experience, quite dramatically, the way all four of the cardinal signs will initiate change in our personal lives and throughout the global map with the formation of a Grand Cardinal Cross. And grand it shall be! Remember, the role of the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn is to be Agents of Change. Venus, (planet of relationships) will be in the cardinal sign of relationships, Libra, who then squares off with Jupiter (planet of aspirations) in the cardinal sign of home and family, Cancer.

The story does not stop there as the planetary bodies move into position to form an archetypal square on our wheel of life, when Jupiter squares off with Uranus (planet of freedom/reformation) in the cardinal sign of Aries, symbol of the Ram, (need I say more). And finally, to complete the dynamic Grand Cardinal Cross is the planet of regeneration, Pluto, in the cardinal sign of Capricorn, which represents duty and responsibility out in the world. In other words, Pluto in Capricorn will be the instrument of change that will sound the global gong throughout the world to shift the balance of power in social and political institutions.

The other noteworthy aspect is the Full Moon in Aquarius on August 20th.  The dynamism of the full moon is so strong that it can be felt two days before the culmination of its luminosity from the rays of the Sun. The sign of Aquarius is characteristic of the element of air and quality of fixed. The element of air represents communication. The quality of fixed is steadfast in its application of whatever energy force that exists. Aquarius energy will express itself either humanely or in a rebellious manner. What lies before us is the opportunity to take part in shedding light upon the inhumane global issues that need to be changed and to take action. The Aquarius Full Moon is a time to share our 3-D vision upon the world.

May you go forth and be Agents of Change…..for the betterment of Humankind!

  • Fascinating observations, Lucille. You really make this subject accessible, even for those of us who don't have much training or background. Does Aquarius (regarding the upcoming full moon in Aquarius) not have some connection to social issues as well and perhaps indicative of some planetary consciousness or action that may be in the works? Jung had Aquarius rising and his work has been so critical to our burgeoning culture....

Each full moon brings with it intense emotions expressed in the manner of the sign it is in. Yes, Aquarius is the sign of the Humanitarian. The important point to remember is the way the Aquarian (air element and fixed quality) expresses those energies. They are the innovators and the freedom fighters. The additional aspect is the house placement. Consider the house placement as the stage where the Moon (The actor) and Sign (script) plays out the drama.  For those of us who are on the west coast it is in the 11th house of Aquarius. According to the degree of 29 (each house has 30 degrees) makes it one degree from the house of Pisces. That being stated, the stage will be prime for not only a social revolution. There will be a much needed spiritual revolution.
