After his break with Sigmund Freud in 1913, Carl Jung was at loose ends and unsure of what the future held. In an effort to treat his own growing sense of disorientation, Jung began a period of creative play, followed by a number of other experimental techniques. These techniques led to the production of a series of paintings and writings based upon dreams and waking visions. These experiments were documented by Jung in his extraordinary and recently published Red Book. They also led to the development of a therapeutic technique that Jung was eventually to call ‘Active Imagination.’ Join us for this eight week college level course and learn the history of Jung’s technique of Active Imagination, how he used it, and how his innovative ideas about psychotherapy revolutionized the field. Not only that, but Jung has said that all of the major innovations of his theory were developed as a result of his using this method. As he has said:

"My most fundamental views and ideas derive from these experiences. First I made the observations and only then did I hammer out my views. And so it is with the hand that guides the crayon or brush, the foot that executes the dance-step, with the eye and the ear, with the word and the thought: a dark impulse is the ultimate arbiter of the pattern, an unconscious ‘a priori’ precipitates itself into plastic form" (Jung, CW 8: par. 402).

This course is a comprehensive and essential introduction to Jung’s technique of Active Imagination. This nine week course begins with one free introductory class, followed by eight modules that introduce you to Jung’s work with the Red Book, his later writings on Active Imagination, as well as the developments of dance therapy, dramatic therapy, art therapy, sand play, and other techniques that were a direct result of Jung’s discoveries. Each weekly meeting will include a presentation and explanation of some aspect of Jung’s development of Active Imagination and its later iterations. A discussion and question/answer session will follow each class. Additionally, a wealth of resources for further study will be available to participants through our online learning platform. Those participants who successfully complete the assignments in the online learning platform will receive a certificate of completion which may be used as credit toward a future certification program. Don’t miss this opportunity to get a solid grounding in the Jungian technique of Active Imagination.
