Students enrolled in Jung 101: An Introduction to Jungian Psychology will gain knowledge of the core concepts of Analytical (Jungian) psychology, including definitions and functions of the structures of the personal and collective unconscious, the dynamics of psychic (psychological) energy, and the psyche’s natural drive to wholeness and healing. The assigned text and the course modules are designed to take the student on a voyage of self-discovery through the structures and processes of the Jungian psyche.
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung is one of the most influential figures in 20th century Depth Psychology. This course will introduce students to the core principles, methods, and terms of Jung’s psychology. Through eight in depth modules this course introduces students to the essentials of Jungian thought. What distinguishes Jung’s psychology from other depth psychologies is Jung’s assertion that the deep unconscious of every human being is structured in a similar way. These deep structures steward psychic (psychological) energy through both the conscious and unconscious aspects of personality.
Students can audit the course by simply watching the online videos at their own pace. Those students who wish to earn the certificate will be required to read the assigned textbook – Jung’s Map of the Soul, by Murray Stein – and successfully complete two quizzes per module (one on the video, and one on the readings). Students will have 180 days (six months) to access the course and complete all of the assignments to earn a certificate of completion. Certificates can be used towards certification as a specialist in depth psychology through the Depth Psychology Academy.
Attendees may also simply audit the course, without completing assignments for credit.

Vanderbilt University
James Newell is an educator, counselor, personal coach, professional musician, and the director of the Depth Psychology Alliance. James earned his master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling and Theology from Vanderbilt University Divinity School, with a focus on Jungian psychology. He earned his doctorate in History of Religions from the Vanderbilt University Graduate School of Religion. James teaches online courses in world religions for Central Michigan University, Excelsior College, and other schools. For the past several years he has been developing a certification program in depth psychology offered through the Depth Psychology Alliance. We recently graduated our first cohort in the program.
