Lucid dreaming is the conscious perception of one's state while dreaming, resulting in a much clearer ("lucid") experience and sometimes enabling direct control over the content of the dream. The complete experience from start to finish is called a lucid dream. Stephen LaBerge, a popular author and experimenter on the subject, has defined it as "dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming."LaBerge and his associates have called people who purposely explore the possibilities of lucid dreaming oneironauts (literally from the Greek ονειροναύτες, meaning "dream sailors").“Most depth psychologists would probably agree that dreams show, in their own manner, the situation in the unconscious. This manner is a figurative one, a picture writing, a language of images. The problem is to know what those images mean.”~ P.W. Martin, “Experiment in depth: A study of the work of Jung, Eliot and Toynbee,” 1955 (1978 reprint), p. 38, Boston, MA: Routledge & Keegan Paul." The sailor does not control the sea, nor does the lucid dreamer control the dream. Like a sailor, lucid dreamers manipulate or direct themselves in the larger expanse of dreaming; however, they do not control it. Lucid dreaming appears to be a co-created experience.
