Befriending the Imagination
Ruth Gendler
Sunday July 22, 1–4pm, $45
The human imagination is an essential natural resource, not rare, but precious. Based on her work as poet-in-the-schools, her practice as an artist, and her great love of metaphor and dreams, Ruth’s experiential program will celebrate the immensity, wisdom, and beauty of imagination. After presenting some of the children’s poetry as inspiration, Gendler will offer some simple exercises that invite participants to look with the eyes of imagination, put our ears to the ground and listen, and befriend our imaginations. We also consider how to sustain the creative impulse and keep the creative spirit alive in daily life. This workshop is for everyone, not just those who consider themselves “creative.”
Ruth Gendler is an exhibiting artist and author of best-selling The Book of Qualities, the award-winning Notes on the Need for Beauty, and the anthology, Changing Light. Trying to explain the ground of her approach she sometimes refers to herself as an “anthropologist of the imagination.”
