Archetypal Patterns in Film Noir, 1946-1951
Film noir is an original and defining American cinematic movement. It blends expressionist visual style, existential attitudes, and depth psychological struggles, invoking a startling dark beauty. In this course we’ll view and discuss six essential films noir from the stellar postwar period. We’ll focus on key archetypal patterns of noir—moral ambiguity, mythic descent, nuclear age angst, and brilliant stylistic flourishes. Join us as we shine a light on the shadow side of the midcentury American psyche. Including: The Killers, Out of the Past, and Ace in the Hole.
