The apocalyptic predictions of the Mayans about December 21, 2012 are usually interpreted as being about the actual destruction of the material world. However the original meaning of "apocalypse" is not destruction but "lifting of the veil" or “revelation.” This radically different, more optimistic interpretation is of an end-of-the-world as we know it – an end to the violence and greed, egotistic values, corrupt institutions and conflicts between organized religions. Instead of an end of time, this could be seen as an opportunity for a rebirth and mass transformation of humanity for the better.
