Preston Sturges burst forth into 1940s America, the first credited writer-director in Hollywood history. He churned out eight brilliant films from 1940 to 1944, then all but disappeared. Sturges’ startlingly original, eccentric style combined cosmopolitan wit, charming social satire, sophisticated sexual escapades, and sparkling, literate dialogue, all punctuated by his repertory company of superb character actors.

Deeper examination of Sturges’ genius provides a surprising wealth of cultural and psychological dimensions to consider from the viewpoint of archetype and myth, and image.

Join us for engaging lectures and soulful discussions, as we view four Sturges masterworks:

The Great McGinty

The Lady Eve ~

Sullivan’s Travels

The Palm Beach Story

~ The Politician as Trickster ~ The Temptress, Serpent, and Holy Fool ~ ~ The Marriage and Remarriage of Opposites ~ The Writer’s Journey as Hero Tale ~ ~ Necessary Twists of Fate ~ Rags-to-Riches Motifs in Depression-Era Films ~
