UPDATE 3/20: This course has been postponed. Please stay tuned for new dates and times.
FIRST SESSION IS FREE
This 7-week course will include a thorough introduction to the principles behind and application of Terrapsychology, pioneered by Craig Chalquist, Ph.D., which “studies how terrain, place, element, and natural process show up in human psychology, endeavor, and story, including myth and legend” http://www.terrapsych.com/whatisTP.html
Each webinar will offer a new facet of the framework and give students a task for the week to incorporate the practice of connecting to place into their daily lives. Optional written assignments and/or journaling may be assigned to facilitate understanding of the material.
You will
- Discover the depth of connection between personal psychology and planetary particulars, or: how the places you inhabit also inhabit your psychology.
- Learn how to deeply listen to places, to hear their stories and the ways they might intersect with your own, and to see their character by way of the recurrent themes that tend to live in different locales and often echoed in: personal story, history, geography and geology, modern architecture and art, folktales, etc.
- develop your own style of interacting with the richness of the natural world in a way that will begin to dissolve the self/world disconnect
- begin to develop a conscious relationship with the animate presence of place, so that the psyche of both place and people can begin to heal
ABOUT MAGGIE HIPPMAN, M.A.
Maggie's formal education began in psychology and grew into an MA in Environmental Humanities from the University of Utah. Her work has been primarily with adolescents in Wilderness and Horticulture therapy, which has taken her into the Sierra Nevadas, the deserts of Utah, and the Big Island of Hawaii. Through placed-based therapeutic work (and education that focused on Ecopsychology and Terrapsychology) she developed a sensitivity to the healing potential and rooted intelligence that seems to reside in different locales.
Her extensive work in mindfulness (she is a certified yoga teacher, has led meditation courses and sat many ten-day silent meditation retreats) has deeply informed her work and become an integral tool in helping others orient themselves inside the larger story of place.
