LAMENT 0F THE DEAD

I've recently   begun reading Sonu Shamdashini's and the late James Hillman's "Lament of the Dead.."

I'm barely into it, and I've been impacted tremendously.  I've been  led   back into my own personal ancestry in order to reflect upon so many things personal, psychological and archetypal, all unexplained, and unaccounted for. Questions emerged. Are these patterns the soul's reincarnation?  Is this the reason for so many unexplained, unaccounted for behavioural and  psychological patterns personal and interpersonal. The term lament used in the title of the book seems so fitting. I've experienced a kind of haunting my entire life of themes, people, who's very presence seemed to exist from the time I was barely 4 years old.  I don't espouse to reincarnation as such, but there is a reincarnating feeling about this. Almost as if the soul, possessing the same characteristics  passes from one person to another.  Are these archetypal family patterns needing attention?....I've seen these patterns exist in family members horoscopes  , person to person, family members to family members. What do these images of soul often seen as haunting family themes want from us?  Of course they are more than personal. More than just MY LITTLE CONCERN. MY HAUNTING..     Must we find a way to midwife them into the  outer world?

I had a short dream, in which I had four monarch butterflies all connected by a string . They ranged from large to small.  I knew I must release these images of psyche/soul i.e.butterflies, out into the world.   I opened a window and let them fly    free thus releasing soul into the world.

Could it be that the lament of my/our personal hauntings  want to be given as an offering, to the soul of the world?

  • Hi Judith,

I am enamored by your dream involving monarch butterflies.  At Pacifica Graduate Institute I wrote my dissertation on migration, including a section on monarch butterflies.  I am currently working on a paper about monarch migration (while attempting to navigate the licensing process).  I am in awe of the synchronicity of your dream - it is a soulful and poignant reminder that it is time and that I have a responsibility to release sections of my writing to the outer world, to midwife them as you say, as an offering to the soul of the world.  Thank you!  Lynn

    • THANK YOU LYNN. THERE'S AN ARTICLE IN  A RECENT SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN ON MONARCHS.  SOUNDS LIKE FASCINATING MIGRATION. I'M GETTING READY TO SCULPT THE DREAM AND REALIZE I WILL NEED AN ATTACHMENT OF STRING  AT FIRST.  THEN A WAY TO CUT THE STRING... FASCINATING . THANKS FOR WRITING AND GOOD LUCK. JUDIE

  • Hi Judith - I have not read this book, however, the universal phenomena of grief (mourning) and healing of the family tree work, knowing the lamentation (howlings/hauntings) of the dead from my ancestry; I agree with you there appeared to be a deep soul need within me and my ancestors lamentations got my attention.  So, I do believe attention of a wrong acted upon a deceased held silent within (soul had no choice nor voice), propelling, giving voice to that departed soul story with the hope that acknowledgment might promote a corrective experience or new human pattern or way of being - is being sought, freed out there.

In my ancestry, it took me, the baby of a 4th generation lineage to uncover and address this deep lament during my personal healing experiences/journey.  I have shared these deep lament of the dead from my ancestry privately with a few, selected persons, however, I have not offered them openly.

Atrocities, genetic loading upon survivors (transgenetic material), across generations remains a soul burden until someone exposes and brings it to light.  They say that eventually whatever happens in the dark will be brought to light and another old saying is that sanity and insanity is a fine line.

When madness is expressed violently upon an unsuspecting other; that temporarily gets our attention, however, when do we learn and how do we change?

If I look at my own family legacy; some nasty patterns are repeating, in the unsuspecting younger generations, despite the lessons some learned from our elders/ancestry experiences.  Even when the young are forwarned, some choose not to head insights shared.

All this remains a confusing, great mystery to me - the lack of unlearning, inability to change directly related to and inspite of the teaching of the laments of the dead.

Thanks for opening this discussion.  Peace + love Linda
