This is an exploration of the Chiron archetype in Pisces as it relates to current global upheaval reflected by current astrological transits and aspects . . .

Chiron is the teacher and the healer of our inner Hero, the guide to our Hero’s journey.  It is common to limit discussion of Chiron in astrological circles as “the wounded healer,” and while there is truth to that statement, there is also more to Chiron than a healer with a wound.  The Chiron archetype will be an important guide for us during the Summer of 2013 in between the Pluto-Uranus square of May 2013 and the upcoming square of November 2013.  There is a fascinating connection between Chiron and the current Pluto-Uranus cycle because in the mid-1960s when Pluto and Uranus were conjunct in Virgo, Chiron was not only in Pisces, it was in the same vicinity of Pisces as it is now . . .

  • Thank you, Gary, for Alan Oken's wise words.  It  (the crucifixion part) reminded of Isabel Hickey's esoteric book and tapes back when I was an astrology student in the early 70's. She'd often say, "it's serve or suffer," especially about Virgo and Pisces.

Many in my generation thought of ourselves as liberated, (especially those of us who relocated to California,) and very conscious about our decision-making..

The Uranus upheaval this time around comes with the changing or modifying of topics we saw as important breakthroughs for the Collective when we were young: attacks on Planned Parenthood in various state legislatures, attacks on the Voting Rights Law and Civil Liberties (adaptations of standards for  personal freedom/privacy to the digital age and terrorism) though we're happy to see Gay marriage spreading through the states, the last breakthrough in civil liberties.

Change is necessary, but we're also thinking, with Uranus in Aries, "let's not throw out the baby with the bath water and return to the 19th Century!" We look forward to seeing what emerges from the national discussion, the two conflicting philosophies on keeping or repealing the New Deal, or as Gingrich once said," letting Medicare wither on the vine," Younger people, with their modern skills, will lead us onward.

And yes, with the Grand Water Trines out there this summer, so much is going on in a quieter, inner way. In July, Rx Mercury, also facilitates introspection.

Pluto and Saturn in Mutual Reception may (hopefully) symbolize solid foundations at the end of the Cardinal Square cycle. Pluto transformations usually take a long time. Back in our salad days, we learned to respect that intense Pluto process, though in the beginning, we used the word 'Transformation' somewhat glibly. One example, at the individual level, was the remark of a friend, "I can't believe I'm back in therapy for the same issue!"

  • Thank you for researching Chiron's last journey through the same degrees of Pisces where it's traveling now, Gary, and also the position of the outer planets Uranus and Pluto to each other at that time, the 60's.

When thinking of Chiron as mentor as well as Wounded Healer, we observe that Chiron accentuates the Uranus- Awakener theme again as it did in the 60's. Many individuals, starting over financially after the recession, seek a new direction. Young and old, people seek to update their skills and talents, this time for the digital age.

People feel the same Uranian sense of urgency now that those of us who lived through the 60's felt, a desire for change, at both the personal and societal level.  Working from within, via Piscean intuition, the Chiron influence will, one hopes, result in our taking the time to make wise choices, rather than simply rebelling or attacking others'  'radical' religious and political philosophies.

Last time around,  Chiron, took many of us deeper within, through meditation, dream analysis and other introspective therapies, whereby we came to realize that the change we sought began with us, and then extended outward.  Uranus coincided with our coming together in New Age communities, which we saw at the time as prototypes for the future.

Considering Pluto's role: one aspect is the anti-materialism of the 60's in which students viewed the older generation as Plutocrats, especially those who profited financially from the military-industrial- complex during the Vietnam War. It will be interesting to see if the Uranus-Pluto square results in a pervasive anti-materialism among younger people this time, perhaps some modern version of the flower children.

Older people (in their 60's to mid 70's) are discussing communities again, pooling their resources to purchase apartment buildings and live together, this time in cities, rather than rural areas. They hope to avoid isolation (Pluto-Scorpio Archetype) as they grow older. Pluto and Saturn traveling in Mutual Receptivity (Scorpio and Capricorn) seem to favor simplicity, letting go of possessions and moving from suburban homes to more "walkable" cities.

    • Thank you so much Kathleen, I always love hearing from you and your perspective. Especially considering in this case how much more knowledge you have of the 1960s transits . . .  your analysis is very thoughtful.

I think your description of how Pisces Chiron took you and others within during the 1960s to learn the lesson of making changes within in order to help bring about external changes is very fitting for this time period.  There has been a lot of Uranian awakening going on, and I think much more will be coming soon.  It is fascinating considering all of this how the Grand Water Trine of this Summer with Cancer Jupiter, Scorpio Saturn, and Pisces Neptune, will begin to shift by the end of the year into another Grand Water Trine with Chiron: Pisces Chiron, Cancer Jupiter, and Scorpio Saturn.

I really like your description of how elders are focusing more on community at this time.  We will see about the younger generation- one fascinating aspect is that the generation that is in the 17 - 25 or so age range were all born with the Uranus-Neptune conjunction in Capricorn.  The Pluto transit through Capricorn is going to transform and transmute them while awakening their Uranian energies . . .  Also very fitting with the digital age as you mentioned, and how many of these young people have formed tight-nit communities of like-minded idealism within social media and other digital age currents . . .

One of my favorite descriptions of the coming Age of Aquarius and the beginning shifts from the Age of Pisces is by astrologer Alan Oken.  In Soul Centered Astrology he wrote:

In the Piscean Age, such liberation [resolution of cosmic duality] came from the crucifixion. It was in this most painful way that the lower ego sacrificed itself for the Higher Self.  This act led to a mystical union with the Universal Source, and a consequent resurrection, resurgence, and rebirth of the potency of that essential Love for the betterment of all humanity.  In the New Age, individual evolutionary progress occurs as a result of the conscious merging of a fully individualized self within a transcendental group collective . . . The results are a channeling of the positive currents of Uranus, Buddhi, and the energies of the planetary heart chakra.  This "downpouring" stimulates service to Humanity as the vehicle for the expression of a great potency for individual, group, and collective enLightenment. (p. 240)

In this way some of the actions of the younger generation that have been labeled to be so self-absorbed and narcissistic could in the end be about their own unique individuation process, and this of course extends to every one as well.  So if we can each then individuate fully, we can then merge together into spiritualized collectives to a healthier and holistic level.  From your perspective, it sounds like this may already be happening more to a greater extent amongst elders who have already gone through this process.

I'd love to hear anymore of your thoughts about Chiron in Pisces in the 1960s and now . . .

      peace and love,

      Gray
