Earthrise vs. Marsrise

Listening through our last lecture, and while I do see Earthrise as a new eradigm emerging, it seems like that's a grander, overarching view than what's really taking place today. I would argue we're more immediately preoccupied with Mars-ian energy--at least for the time being.

Hot on the heels of one war ending, we have another brewing. Destruction and violence, beheadings and drone strikes seem to be the talk of the day, or at least what's played on the möbius news channels like CNN. Craig's quote of Joe Campbell to Bill Moyers ,"When you see the earth from the moon, you don't see any divisions there of nations or states," is beautiful and idealistic, yet there's a 1,000 lb. weight pulling us back to division, segregation, and carnage. War seems to be the main course being served at the banquet feast, and it's getting messy.

Mars himself is not just a god of war, but also a god of agriculture and virility. With his destruction comes cultivation. It seems that with Mars in the driver's seat, we won't have the idealistic removal of divisions, as Campbell hoped. Instead, we will have war over land--the best lands--and out of that war will come/should come an agricultural boon.

And the invasion doesn't just stop on this planet. Even as I write this, NASA's mission to mars is prepping to drop into orbit around the red planet. The Maven (one who seeks to pass knowledge on) will gather info about the atmosphere. It's a recon mission. It's another border we will cross. We are a nation who sets out to divide and conquer. I don't see the Earthrise quite as clearly as I want to.
