I love the idea of Earthrise, the way it could stand as a mythic umbrella to the cultural, social and ecological ideas and actions which co-exist and co-develop in our current reality: the goddess movement, the environmental movement, ecopsychoogy, and Systems Theory among others. This is a place of hopfulness and optimism for me.
When Joseph Campbell speaks of the Earthrise myth, he says, “That is the country that we are going to be celebrating.” And I hang on to this notion will all my heart, knowing that it will necessitate a great effort to get to this point of celebration.
He also says that when the earth is viewed from afar, there are no divisions, only unity. There is no separation between heaven and earth. The earth is in heaven already. Campbell says, “There is a unity in the universe and a unity in our own experience.”
And perhaps it is here that we, or that I, will find myself exerting loving effort: to bring about the creation of a sense of unity in our experience. The administration of myth in this regard will be undeniably salubrious.
