Calling those who live east of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon. I love California, Chicago, New York and New England, but need to connect with others in the South who are interested in exploring Jungian/Archetypal theories and practice.

  • Why miss Robin, ah am most positive that upon your eventual return, the South shall be most welcomin'. The blossoms on the magnolia next to the veranda have not been as full since ya'll left.
  • I am so glad to see this group! I currently live in the Pacific Northwest but I was born and raised in the south and am looking forward to the day when I can return. The need for a supportive depth psychology group in the south is so important and so needed!
  • Every journey begins with..... Glad to hear you took that first step. Psyche is always on the side of health and wholeness. Good energy sending your way.

  • Congratulations, Sara! That's very exciting!
  • I took the plunge and submitted my application to West Georgia a few minutes ago and just paid to send my GRE scores to them.  Now I have to get started on my personal statement, which is always my least favorite part of applications.  I never know what I should write in those things.  I'm hoping I'll be able to wow the admissions committee with whatever I write since, as of now, West Georgia is the only Psychology graduate program I've applied to (With the other 5 schools the programs I applied to were all in higher education administration as as a backup plan since my overall GPA wasn't strong enough for most Psychology programs I looked into).  I've toyed with the idea of applying to Napropa University for either their Transpersonal Counseling Psychology program or their Religious Studies program, but I'm not so sure I'd be willing to move to Colorado.  I'm a true Southern girl, so I'm really hoping that I get into West Georgia.
  • Hi Sara! I just completed my dissertation and earned my PhD from Pacifica. So, clearly I'm a fan. However, a close friend of mine got his MA in West GA's Humanistic Psych program and can't say enough good things about it . . . And I thought I read recently that West GA now offers a PhD in Humanistic Psych . . . I probably would have considered that program had they offered the PhD back when I started my grad work in 2005. Good luck sorting it all out.
  • I followed a similar path. Quit college during my third year, didn't really have any idea why I went except it was expected in my family that everyone goes to college. Eventually graduated with BA in Psych and a minor in religion. Don't give up, I now have two MAs with a third on the way by May, the PhD when the dissertation is completed and accepted. It can happen, keep that smile.
  • Well the money is an issue, but another thing is that I withdrew completely from school a couple of years back and it completely warped my GPA, so that makes me iffy.  I've brought my overall GPA back up and have around a 3.6 for the last 60 hours I've taken but I'd like to maybe get a master's from another school (hopefully West Georgia, if I get in) to get more experience in doing scholarly research and show that I'm a serious student who has learned from past mistakes and then apply to a PhD through Pacifica once I'm done with that.
  • Sara,

I thought losing your mind was a prerequisite for entering graduate school!!! :)

I'm only partially kidding (Hermes). There are many who wrote books, give workshops, etc. and they are all of some worth but, being interested in depth psychology, keep using your intuitive, reflective powers as you go hunting. You mentiomned not getting into Pacifica "at this point in time." Is that code for $$$$$$$  ??

  • Hey all,

Just wanted to introduce myself to everyone in the group and say that it's great to find a group of fellow Southern Jung lovers.

I'm currently getting ready to start my last semester of undergraduate study at a small college called Pikeville College in Eastern Kentucky.  I actually started out majoring in Psychology 5 years ago and allowed myself to be talked out of it by my family since, to quote them, I'd "be in school for the rest of my life and never make any money at it".  I ended up changing majors about 4 or 5 times, took some time off from school and ended up back at majoring in Psychology.  It wasn't until last fall when I changed back to Psychology that I got interested in Jung and Depth Psychology.  The psychology department there is small, but wonderful.  My advisor is actually a former student of James Hillman, which I find really cool.

I'm currently trying to find a graduate school where I can study depth psychology.  Pacifica would be the ultimate for me but, unfortunately, I don't think I'd have a shot of getting in at this moment in time.  I'm planning on applying to the University of West Georgia because they have a Master's program that's grounded in humanistic and transpersonal psychology and really give you the chance to design your own program of study based on your interest.  For all of you with Master's and PhD.'s, do you have any advice for me on how to get through the grad school application process without completely losing my mind?

Jung and the Arts

This will be the focus of the first Jung in the South Conference and except for a few folks I know who would like to present, this is as far as it has gotten. I would like to make this planning a group endeavor. Is anyone connected with a college or university or art institute (housing and board made easier) that might be interested in hosting the event? I imagine during the summer if an academic setting.  If you do plan to check with organizations in your area, please let me know so I don't…

Suggestions on Readings for a Directed Study Proposal.

Since my graduate program doesn't offer any Jungian courses regularly, I'm getting ready to draft a proposal for an independent study course that focuses specifically on Jung.  There's a couple of faculty members that have an interest in Jung that may agree to be the overseer and mentor for me on this.  I figured if I came up with a proposed course of study that it would only help my chances of getting one to agree, but I'm having a very hard time narrowing down what the proposed readings for…
