C. G. Jung ushered in a revolutionary understanding of the mind and culture with his innovative approach to psychology. The question arises, then, “Why did this innovative thinker spend the last twenty years of his intellectual life studying and writing about Christianity?" According to C. G. Jung, symbols emerging from the dreams and fantasies of his patients indicated that the Western God-image – the imago dei – was evolving in a way that contemporary Christian institutions could no longer contain and mediate. Jung felt that, if Western culture is to survive, we must engage these emerging symbols so that they may once again help us to mediate the dynamic, instinctual energies of the psyche in life-affirming ways. If we fail to do this, we run the risk of becoming possessed and driven by these unconscious instincts in chaotic and destructive ways.

Join us for this eight week college level course and learn how Jung understood the mythological dimensions of Christian religious tradition and how he understood the mythological symbolism of alchemy, astrology, Gnosticism, and other Western practices as compensations for the conscious cultural attitudes of our times.

Christians, non-Christians, and anyone interested in the symbolic language of the unconscious will benefit from this comprehensive introduction to C. G. Jung’s writings on Christianity and the evolving Western God image.

This nine week course begins with one free introductory class, followed by eight modules that introduce you to how Jung understood the Christian tradition, and why he felt the tradition had lost much of the power over believers that it once held. Each weekly meeting will include a presentation and explanation of Jung’s understanding and interpretation of the Christian tradition, it's role in the developing Western God-image, and how, as a psychotherapist, he attempted to prescribe ways to heal what he saw as an ailing religion and cultural worldview. A discussion and question/answer session will follow. Additionally, a wealth of resources for further study will be available to participants through our online learning platform. Those participants who successfully complete the assignments in the online learning platform will receive a certificate of completion. Don’t miss this opportunity to understand Jung’s method of psychotherapy and how he applied that method to what he understood to be an ailing Christian tradition. Christians and non-Christians alike will benefit from this comprehensive introduction to C. G. Jung’s writings on Christianity and the Christian tradition.
