“In the presence of a disease, especially a severe or dangerous one, the patient places his hopes and confidence in the person of the healer rather than in his medications and other healing techniques. It would therefore seem that the healer's personality is the principal agent of the cure, in addition to any necessary skill or knowledge…the healer awakens and develops in the patient his own self-healing tendencies.” - Henri Ellenberger, The Discovery of the Unconscious, p. 38

It has been said that only the wounded healer heals, but the healer’s unattended wounds can also bring harm upon both therapist and client. The positive (or negative) expectation that a patient or client places upon a counselor, therapist, coach, or healer is a part of what both C. G. Jung and Sigmund Freud referred to as the transference. The importance of this idea of the transference/countertransference is one of the few things that Jung and Freud continued to agree upon after their professional break. It is also an important aspect of the archetype of the wounded healer. Archetypally – and mythologically – speaking, the healer’s wound opens him or her up to the inner, archetypal realm. However, it also threatens the therapeutic relationship through the countertransference, or the projection of the therapist’s wound onto the client. In this course, we will explore the archetypal and mythological roots of the figure of the wounded healer, as well as its contemporary manifestations in the transference/ countertransference phenomena. Conscious awareness of the archetype of the wounded healer can assist those in the helping professions to remain balanced and healthy while helping others.

Each weekly meeting of the course will include explore some aspect of the Jungian understanding of the wounded healer archetype. A discussion and question/answer session will follow. Additionally, a wealth of resources for further study will be available to participants through our online learning platform. Those participants who successfully complete the assignments in the online learning platform will receive a certificate of completion which may be used as credit toward a future certification program. Don’t miss this opportunity to further your understanding of the wounded healer archetype, and the vital role played by transference/countertransference phenomena in therapeutic work. Anyone who works in the helping professions will benefit from the important ideas covered in this course.
