An Urban Pilgrimage at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco
With the Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress

Friday & Saturday March 9-10, 2012

Hildegard of Bingen (1098 to 1179) lived her life in a 12-mile radius and yet her life fascinates us even today. Why? She understands direct experiences of the divine. Her theology is articulated through nature and she had to overcome immense difficulties to trust her creative impulses. We will explore how these themes are relevant to our lives today.

Author of ten books, creator of the first opera, composer, Benedictine abbess, visionary, spiritual director for emperors, kings and troubled clergy, she was a woman of immense energy and creativity. She would stand alongside the towering figure of Leonardo da Vinci had she not been a woman.

Join us for this pilgrimage weekend to learn about this fascinating woman. You will see her visions that she articulated for her artisans to create. We will explore excerpts of her letters, learn about what scholars call “the lost language of Hildegard”, see photos of the three convents she established, and experience the music of Hildegard presented by Veriditas Master Teacher, Kayleen Asbo.
