I took this picture of two legendary residents of Montecito, the rich section of Santa Barbara: Barney Conrad and Jonathan Winters. Old friends running into each other at Tom's in the Montecito Village. I was with a friend going to lunch, and we spotted Jonathan and joined him for about 30 extraordinary minutes of his improvisational comedy over lunch. Barnaby, one of my writing mentors and the founder of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference, has just walked out of the restaurant, running into all of us. Jonathan ended our visit that day by imitating a "horse shitting in a parking lot" (his words). Life, to borrow the title of a Hemingway book, is a "moveable feast."
