Osiris: astrology archetype?

I recently finished an initial exploration of the Osiris asteroid and possible archetypal meanings in astrology related alchemy, individuation, regeneration, . . .A llink to the blog is here:

In May 2012 I joined the Depth Psychology Alliance to take part in a book club led by Thom Cavalli on his wonderful book, Embodying Osiris: The Secrets of Alchemical Transformation.  Most of my understanding of Osiris, alchemy, and how they could relate to an astrological archetype comes from this experience.

Osiris has appeared in my life at times in the past, along with Isis, and in our book club I was struck by Dr. Cavalli's description and how I could see connections with astrological archetypes.  I have so far found that the Osiris and Isis asteroids have orbits of less than four years and a conjunction cycle of less than two years.  I'm intrigued by the possibility that their two year conjunction cycle could help "re-animate" the Osiris archetype- it recently happened again on March 2, 2013 at 11 degrees of Aquarius.  During the intense recent Winter Solstice 2012, the Osiris asteroid also happened to be conjunct Pluto in Capricorn.

In our book club Dr. Cavalli made the excellent point that Osiris is extremely difficult to characterize, and from what I can tell in Depth Psychology, Osiris represents the totality of psyche- a vast subject to wrap your mind around.  However, I do feel there are some ways to write about Osiris related to astrology, and so I have done so.

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and feedback. If you want to look up Osiris in your chart, it is asteroid #1923.

Best,

Gray

  • I just found an interesting Osiris chart- Carl Jung.  Jung has Osiris at 29 degrees Libra conjunct his Jupiter at 24 degrees Libra in his 8th house in the Placidus house system (9th house in Porphyry house system).  That alone says so much.  However, his Osiris-Jupiter is actually opposite his Aries Chiron conjunct Taurus Neptune which is 2nd house Placidus, 3rd House Porphyry.  And then this opposition is actually part of a t-square with his Leo Sun-Vesta in the 6th House. !!!

    • Gray: I was completely blown away by your scholarly, academic discussion of the mythic and astrological Osiris, and the way in which you took  off from Thom's scholarly work.  You and your work have emerged from the  imaginal bronze urn I wrote about a few days ago in "star" fashion! Can you tell us all where we can obtain the ephemeris that is the location of these asteroids. I have the more common ones but would like the list, Are they numbered Is that why 19-- is noted?
    • All the best, and thanks. Judie Harte
    • Judith and anyone else interested,

You can use this link to plug in numbers:

      http://www.true-node.com/eph1/

Under the "extended chart section" of http://www.astro.com

you can look up an alphabetical list of asteroids to find the numbers.

    • Thank you Judith, that is very validating to hear.  If you use www.astro.com or a service like that, you can usually enter the asteroids in a space according to number- in this case, Osiris is 1923 but they generally have a link to a list of asteroids so you can look them up.

I have a link to an ephemeris you can use to track the asteroids, which is what I did for the most recent period of time- I don't have access to it at the moment but I will get back to you with it.

      Thank you, Gray
