  • Wow! There's all kinds of action happening in this process of conceiving the dissertation topic! Gabrielle, I am so glad to hear that Mark Kelly has helped you on your path. However, I would also point out that you have been living in that library! So, you have definitely invested your time and attention, enabling this "Aha" to happen.
  • My kudos goes to Mark Kelly, Reference Librarian at Pacifica. In a small conversation about subjectivity and the non-human "subject," he helped me take my Diss. research from being the keen-but-hovering action of the White-tailed Kite, to his/her diving soar of honing in on "dinner"! What fun! Hat tipping to Mark!
  • Actually Ed, I think it sounds more like this is where the heavy breathing comes in! Enjoy!
  • You've got me giggling, Ed! Nice imagery!
  • I have been away too long!! Babies are evolving and being born left and right!!. Mine is still just a "twinkle in the eye" and it wants to be born too soon. This is where the breathing exercises come in, correct??
  • I am celebrating this morning: I have now incorporated an entire 4" notebook full of data into my dissertation. All four of my data chapters are complete. Now, I have only to finish the conclusion chapter before I send this being out into the world!
  • I have total trust in your ability to parent this embryo.
  • In keeping with the baby metaphor...my embryonic dissertation began to kick last week. Have written not a single word for months, and now, for whatever reason, it seems DNA is being formed, cells merging, replicating, finding their rightful places. What is simply amazing is that in this dynamism, I am seeing how the topic and its nucleus has been there since last September... Had to re-read Jung to recall how the archetype, if unacknowledged, turns to symptom, then had to sit quietly with the recurring motif of hovering in order to see the moment when the idea was born...even if in symptom! Whew! Now it's just a matter of trusting my ability to sustain this partnership...
  • Here's to being held!!!
  • My third of four data chapters has come back to me from my advisor . . . and I am feeling very good about this "baby boy!" Today, after I incorporate her feedback, I begin the final process of incorporating data into the last chapter. My intention is to finish writing the conclusion and send the whole dissertation off to my chair before the conference in Cornell. And so, I ask that you hold me in your thoughts and/or prayers as the real labor begins for me . . . Handing over my baby to the powers that be.

Sharing Tips and Resources: Hermeneutics: An Intellectual Tradition for Communication Studies

I know this group hasn't been very active; however, I think it could be a remarkable resource for all of us working on a thesis or dissertation if members would share any resources they come across that might be of help to others, or offer tips they find useful in doing the work as those practices become useful to them. On that note, I came across what I think is a valuable scholarly paper on Hermeneutics that may be helpful and wanted to share. Good luck to all, wherever you are in your…

What I wouldn't give to be a bona fide member of this group!

Hello All: It's so cool to read about your exploits on your "journeys" through academia.  My deepest desire is to go on to fo my PhD in Spiritual Direction through Wisdom University or ITP. The only thing holding me back is $$$ at the moment. Even though I made the Dean's Commendation list for the MCounsel (Hons) programme at my Alma Mater in Aussie, NZ isn't the best country for trying to source scholarship or fellowship funding.  Especially if you haven't completed your last grad degree here.…
