When Dreams Depict a Stage in the Alchemical Process
I have been going through profound changes for the last three years that have included a number of losses. I have glibly referred to my situation on occasion as "my dismantling." I'm coming out the other end, but managing my mood is still an effort. I don't know a lot about alchemy, but a dream I had a few days ago brought forth the image of the alchemical bath and seemed to speak to the magnitude of my transformation: I am seated in a black office chair on rollers in a large auditorium with…

Hi Ruth! I feel like a bum, it's been so long since we've had coffee and talked . . . and, then, I'm remiss in responding to your comment last week!
I think that you have brought some clarity to something that wasn't clear at all to me when I wrote my comments on May 26th. And it seems so obvious to me now--our dreams do implicate our consciousness. That is, they help bring to consciousness that which has been unconscious. Of course, silly me. Thank you.
Hi Dorene, I agree that dreams are so complex, and some dreams seem more powerful and evocative than others. In regards to your question about if there are different layers to our psychology, I am reminded of this quote I have been pondering in the Red Book (p. 242) where Jung says "We also live in our dreams, we do not live only by day. Sometimes we accomplish our greatest deeds in dreams."
This quote implies that Jung sees the dream world as an entirely different reality. I have never really thought of dreams that way before. I think of them as messages from the unconscious about this current reality that I live in. But, what if the dream world is a different reality, unhinged from this current day to day life. Then we would be living an entire existence, and the older dreams would be like past events in the life of that existence. And just as we continue to learn from our past expereriences in our day to day life, we could also learn from the past experiences of our dreams. It makes a lot of sense.
Dreams are so rich and complex, regardless how seemingly ordinary! Recently, over a couple of months, I had the interest and opportunity to re-work several dreams with someone whose dreamwork I'd not experienced before. I had unpacked each of the five dreams when I originally had them (and some with more than one dream worker). Re-working them in the context of my life today, I have uncovered further symbolism and meaning. In fact, it seems that the dreams were more about today than when I had them. Yes, they express themes and patterns. However, it has been more than that. It's as if these dreams still held some of my life force--vitality I need, now, to live my life and move into my future. These old dreams contained information necessary to my life today.
I have always believed that biological organisms exist in several dimensions at the same time, and time is one of those dimensions. But, what about the layers of our psychology? Are our dreams implicating different domains of our consciousness? Or, are they expressions of those different domains? In my own case, going back over past dreams seemed to make available to me additional life force that had been . . . trapped? Not the best word, but it will do. Thoughts from others?
