Pacifica Graduate Institute

no
Please share a little about yourself by way of introduction. What draws you to Depth Psychology and what are you looking for from this community?
Narrative psychology combined with social systems on the "outside" and Jungian understanding of the interior "systems" make a nice pairing. Currently working on soul-related theoretical research establishing that soul is a misnomer. A proper understanding begins with seeing that souling as process is a better beginning to understanding the workings within the Psyche.
Do you belong to any other online Psychology-related communities or orgs? If so, which?
Many, but most are Jungian based.

Ed,
Missed your other comments... Sorry. Re: "What reserach are you involved with? We may have some mutual friends. There is also a Jung in the South group that may be of interest as well."
My research is a bit unusual. I can read the life history of a total stranger in detail in a few minutes, just by walking up to them (all the way back to conception). I say nothing, they say nothing, I do not touch them, and I have them close their eyes in order to avoid stimulating their critical mind and thus interfering with and biasing their subconscious responses to my stimulating their memories. With Duke, I am merely demonstrating that a "field" exists outside the physical body by identifying the location of a person in a double blind experiment, where I am not allowed to be within seven feet of a screen that the subject may or may not be behind. They're not ready for the rest of it yet! Last Sat. I did a presentation in Columbia MD for a Wellness Center affiliated with John Hopkins and it filled to capacity (75 people) immediately and they asked me back to present in a larger room.
December 3rd I am in Hartford CT presenting. I try to focus on presenting to psychological and medical professionals who are logical and scientifically oriented.
I am aware of the Jung Society here. I'm on the Board and my wife is Pres. I've presented at the "Journey into Wholeness" Jungian Conference several times in the past..
I see you are promoting Dennis Merritt's new book on the website. Can't wait to read it as we discussed it when he stayed at my house last month while presenting in our area.

Ed,
Thank you for the welcome.
Ironically, while my mailing address is Chapel Hill, my home is in Durham County. The middle of my driveway is the dividing line between the Town of Chapel Hill and the City of Durham. I truly do straddle the fence as my wife is on the faculty at Duke School of Medicine and my son is at UNC Chapel Hill Medical School.
I am neither a football or basketball fan, thus I do not get caught up in the rivalry!
Actually, I enjoy the benefits of the Grand Rounds lectures, conferences and symposiums in psychology, neuroscience and medical engineering at both universities. I'm in heaven!

Ed! Thankyou for your warm welcome, and kind words, much appreciated!
Such riches to explore here! looking forward to diving in, and contributing as well.
much thanks..

Yes, David does have a book out. It's called "Theater for Living: The Art and Science of Community-based Dialogue" and is published by Trafford Publishing. It's worth having. His descriptions of how to lead traditional TO games and deep journals about various theater processes/productions he directed are worthwhile.
There's no better training to have than training in performing Shakespeare, in my opinion. My own actor training was in Adler Technique, but we did a lot of classical work as well and I think that's what really gave me the chance to dig in to my own body and heart in a way that the modern texts don't always encourage. I'm missing my work as an actor lately, and the Shakespeare in particular.
I'm not blogging about the process, but I am keeping a detailed journal as part of the documentation process for the center that's sponsoring my residency here. I'll have to check with the team to see how much I can share that work, but I'll be happy to share it with you if that's allowed. If not, I'm sure there will be other ways for us to exchange ideas.
One of the hopes from this project is that some of the youth I'm working with will obtain training as TO Jokers and be able to carry this work on after I leave. Maybe there would be a way to connect youth here with youth in your area? If not, I'll be happy to share what I've learned about working across boundaries of race, culture, and privilege if that's of any help to you as you navigate building relationships in your home community. It sounds like you're working in a good way---building slowly, listening. I'd love to hear more about what's been happening there.
I'd be happy to meet up with you in NC sometime if you happen to visit. I'm in Sanford with little access to transportation---don't know how close that may be to your buddies. Keep me posted though!
Get out of here! You're on the board of Looking for Lillith!??! I'm a member of Alternate ROOTS and have met Shannon on occasion, though I don't know if she'd remember me. I'm so pleased that you're doing that work and supporting them so deeply.
Yes, Theater of the Oppressed will likely be central to my work here in NC, though it will depend on the expressed needs and wishes of the youth that I'm partnering with. I use a lot of TO techniques in my work and have also been influenced by the work of David Diamond from Vancouver who takes a more "systems" approach to the Boal cannon. I also imagine that there will be a major body-based component to what I am doing here as the young people are facing the chronic stress of not only inter-generational trauma but also very real threats to their safety, their families, their futures. The first task is to see if we can create some safe(r) space and to listen for stories to start emerging.
I've been fascinated by Artaud and Grotowski but haven't been trained in any of Grotowski's techniques. Maybe someday I'll have the chance to do that work. Do you work as an actor, director, writer, other? Do you practice TO? How has your path unfolded?
How exciting to 'meet' you!
Thanks for your welcome, Ed!
I currently work as a freelance director, but my collaborator and I are in the early stages of founding a new theater company here in DC that will focus on devised and community-based work. I'm eager to get to know your thoughts and your own theater practice!
There is so much to explore on the site. This is a busy month for me as I'm doing some cultural organizing work with immigrants in North Carolina this month, but I will check in and get acquainted with the site when I can. Any pointers for a newbie?
Very best,
Melanie
Thanks, Ed, for your welcome. I look forward to learning more about this group and to contributing.
Best,

Thanks Ed. As time goes by I'm sure I'll find different places of entrance into what you've got going here. As the culture plunges into the depths, forums such as this one become increasing less esoteric and more directly relevant.

Ed,
Thanks for the email welcoming me to the Alliance. I look forward to sharing the journey with kindred spirits like you. Thanks also for the affirmations regarding my music. It means a lot.
