Ed Koffenberger left a comment on Jung in the South
"So...after a LONG time away, I resurface and wonder who is still out there, esp. in the Carolinas and Virginia? Frankly, I took too great a chunk of real estate in my exuberance with the beginning of the DPA. Now hoping there are some still…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Bonnie Bright's discussion How pervasive or recognizable is Depth Psychology?-- How (and how often) do you share?
"The actual phrase "depth psychology" about three times. The concepts and perceptions related to and introduced by depth psychology, most likely, 10+ times a week. Normally with people interested in dreams, synchronicity, religion, and philosophy.…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Gerard Scott's discussion The collective unconscious

  • Yes, I agree there, about if you don't mention depth psychology and unconscious etc, then people wil agree. I am OK with neurocience as an integration as I cannot negate the functioning of the brain(or at least what we seem to know), but I cannot stop there, for me, working with soul has an influence on brain anyway...it sorts out its own 'CBT', even through integration through dreams, if that makes sense!!!!

I like TA for the reasons you mention and also because it does actually work with 'unconscious' ... 'lifescripts' and 'games' for example, operate on an unconscious level....

Yes, 'exterior systems with interior systems'..I like the way you have worded that...

I hear you about modality of approach!!! For me, it is about the relationship between therapist and client...which can easily include depth psychology.....

I will keep you up to date when I re-introduce dance in this area...I am starting them all off gently!!!! Then will throw in the idea of movement!

I was a dancer when I was young...and The Black Swan film makes much sense to me...I never experienced hallucinatins, but I guess I was 'hallucinating' in my perfectionsitic mind at that time...thinking I was not 'thin enough', developing anorexia...dance was a healer, a release to me, and yet a shadow, a destroyer..that which norusihed me destroyed me and that which destroyed me nourished me.....thankfully I ahve worked with it all, assimilated it all over the years and integrated it and am integratinit still...still have a 'be perfect driver' (in TA terms) to sort out more though!!! But thankfully, my body and dance are free to express as they are.....

  • Thanks for your questions Ed. Yes, I journal my dreams from time to time. I have a lot of repetitive dreams with little variation. Most bizarre, I have a lot of "dreams within dreams". I am dreaming that I am dreaming or I dream about something that my subconscious remembers as a dream. Then I dream that I "wake up" (either from a good dream) but actually I am still dreaming. Sounds complicated? Sorry if it does...I hate it tooo. Have you seen the movie Inception with LeoDecaprio? The movie establishes that there are many levels to a dream mode. Perhaps mine reach one of the deepest ones.
  • My 'following'...that made me giggle..not so sure I have a 'following'!!! I find little opporunity in the mainstream therapy world to work withdepth psychology and dance/movement therapy...sadly our NHS is becoming all CBT lately. My roots are humanistic and transpersonal, and I find like-minded souls and therapists who appreciate this outside of the mainstream. I think at the moment I am thinking the way forward is with my writing, and publishing in some of our governing body therapy journals, to allow people to consider such an approach or to find htose that already have. As an 'integrative' therapist(humanistic foundation, Jungian Soul, and incorprating Gestalt and TA), I find I am able to include depth psychology without outside influence even knowing! My TA trainer is so open to me including Jungian psychology and encourages me to include in even in my TA reflection. I am due to really start organising dance therapy workshops again soon...I realise it has been a while and I miss it....
  • Dear Ed,

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I am attending a group hosted by the Jung Institute in Chicago on The Answer to Job.   While I am no Jung expert, I have found in my daily experiences with many, that so much of their illness is within...   I look so forward to any conversations we have.

    Regards,

    Maureen

  • I mean Somerset..south west...sussex is south east....
  • Hello Ed, Good to connect with you. Dance/Movement are great for working with the unconscious (though ego does get in the way sometimes, but then that can be worked with!). Jung himself was the origintor of dance/movement as active imagination. I have much yet to learn with it all. I recommend a book called 'Dance Therapy and Depth Psychology' by Joan Chodrow. I am in Yorkshire UK..the North...but I know Sussex where your sister is- The South....good to hear you are connected here with UK...
  • thanks for your welcome. I'm hoping that I can learn more about the relationship of soul and place through this site. I look forward to any feedback you may have. DNS
  • Ed:

Thanks for your comment.  I am a therapist and my point was that I attempt to use or attend to the unconscious in my clinical work (I do so elsewhere, as well), which is not a given for therapy or therapists, whether or not it should be.   And what do you do?

    Laura

  • Thanks for your welcome Ed.

The Black swan.....a gripping dramatisation of the lesser coniunctio.

    I enjoyed it, too.

    David

  • Found it! Thanks again for the welcome. I don’t think many “remember” Laura Mars. I have many bizarre dreams and I dream nightly and can remember many of my dreams, sometimes seven or eight of them at a time, so this is definitely the place for me.
