Ed Koffenberger left a comment on Jung in the South
"As the statues come down or are being debated; as the flags are being removed or changed. What kinds of responses have you observed in your areas? What arguments are being presented for the removal or retention of these symbols? What function does a…"

Ed Koffenberger left a comment on Jung in the South
"So...after a LONG time away, I resurface and wonder who is still out there, esp. in the Carolinas and Virginia? Frankly, I took too great a chunk of real estate in my exuberance with the beginning of the DPA. Now hoping there are some still…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Bonnie Bright's discussion How pervasive or recognizable is Depth Psychology?-- How (and how often) do you share?
"The actual phrase "depth psychology" about three times. The concepts and perceptions related to and introduced by depth psychology, most likely, 10+ times a week. Normally with people interested in dreams, synchronicity, religion, and philosophy.…"

Ed Koffenberger left a comment on Jung in the South
"After a hiatus that included taking a new job, moving to a new state, and having, on the way, heart surgery, I am back and needing some mental stimulation! I'm in North Carolina now (New Bern) and looking for any groups that may be in the area,…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Gerard Scott's discussion The collective unconscious
"Fun. As I understand it, the collect unconscious of humanity is drawn from the combined unconscious dynamics of humanity passed down from the earliest times. If experience is the key, then the alien experience would be alien (couldn't resist) to our…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Gerard Scott's discussion The collective unconscious
"Absolutely. Even Jung postulated that archetypal images could change and new images added after long periods of acceptance by humanity."

Ed Koffenberger replied to Gerard Scott's discussion The collective unconscious
"Just occurred to me that false memory creation has been going on for generations, just not along neuroscientific lines. How many times has history been rewritten and taught in our schools to generations not old enough to have their own memories of…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Gerard Scott's discussion The collective unconscious
"First, going back to the original question, in the context of the collective unconscious, is there such a thing as a false memory? Within the collective unconscious, no, for all human events are physical manifestations of the human condition. Within…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Gerard Scott's discussion The collective unconscious
"The collective unconscious - so far as we can say anything about it at all  - appears to consist of mythological motifs or primordial images, for which reason the myths of all nations are its real exponents. In fact, the whole of mythology could be…"

Ed Koffenberger replied to Bonnie Bright's discussion What a Shaman Sees in a Mental Hospital

  • Thank you Ed!  Martha Ann would be appropriate, you are correct.  I happen to be named after my Mother and my Grandmother, so to keep things straight, I go by Ann.  I am pleased to be a part of the Depth Psychology Alliance.

I am looking forward to seeing what if anything is included concerning Depth Psychology in the Master's program I will be taking.  I really do not see how they could ignore Jung, but who knows.  Our educational institutions have been know to ignore some pretty obvious facts and occurrences.

  • Thanks for the warm welcome

  • Actually most people are unaware of cultural resource preservation, and commercial interests are often dragged into the process because of environmental regulations. The public, however, does seem to appreciate the preservation of cultural monuments and environmentally sensitive places. We can all thank the people who protected the Grand Canyon and ancient sites. In addition to their inherent worth, these places are certainly locales that can provide opportunities for meditation and soul-searching.
  • There are some wonderful plays right now. My daughter is in A View From the Bridge this month.

The theater not to miss is Court Theater in Hyde Park. There is God and then Charles Newel, the director at that theater. Anything is does usually transcends. Please let me know the dates and I will be happy to make some suggestions.

  • Hi Ed,

I do know some people at the institute (I used to know more) and... I see tons of theater in Chicago. This city cannot be surpassed for the variety and quality of theater. I have been going on average every two weeks. There is so much. Do you see much theater?

  • Thank you for the welcome.

You asked about my doctorate in anthropology. I began my graduate studies focusing on archaeology, but in the late 1970s the theoretical emphasis was on trying to establish law-like statements regarding human behavior, an approach I did not find congenial. My training was in both archaeology and cultural anthropology, but my thesis and dissertation were responses to currents in anthropological theory and the epistemology of the social sciences. I did get to do ethnographic fieldwork among the Navajo, and I taught many classes on religion, ritual, and myth. After receiving a Ph.D., I was hired as an archaeologist, primarily working on cultural resource management on historic sites. My work was based in New England, then in New Mexico, and then New York City, although I worked on projects all over the US.

My study of art and depth psychology has just begun, so I doubt that I have that much to contribute at this point. I do, however, look forward to the discussions to follow.
  • I belong to the Women's Day Alliance at the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, TX.  For our April program I put together excerpts from writings and talks of Joseph Campbell a Readers Theater presentation.  The title is Metaphors, Not Historical Facts.  I've included Campbell's interpretations of many religious symbols.  Campbell says that there is truth in any religion if one interprets the symbols metaphorically.  Are you familiar with the format of Readers Theater in which the cast speaks lines but in essence there is no acting?

  • Thanks much for the welcoming.  I will respond more fully when I can.

  • I just realized I never responded to this. Thanks much for the warm welcome. I intend to participate more in the rich offerings of this site this year. I am in Chicago. Where are you?

  • Regarding the cancellation of my December book club for Lilith: The Last Temptation of Adam - I am available to discuss this topic (the Jungian novel) either through any media on this site, or via private e-mail/Skype. I'd posted a discussion document ahead of the book club event on my discussion page: "Personal Transformation through the Myth of Lilith: The Last Temptation of Adam"
